Greetings All,

New to the forums and new to fire poi - trying to set me up with a pair as we speak. started poi in greece 2 months ago when i met some girls who made them as a living. bean bag with string and ribbon. they travel around europe or whereva their visa permits them and they make poi and do occasional fire shows for money and so essentially food and shelter. they are true poi believers and i thank them for making my journey more fulfilling.

i am working in england but will return to south africa in december.

thank you for your time

FoeHammer

Foe Hammer, Foe Hammer?

where have I heard that before?

I almost think it is from the "Dungeons and Dragons" game, but I never met a South African who has played that...

well, anyway - Hi!

I lived in South Africa for a year last year - not so far from Jo'berg. I wish I had been in Capetown though. Do you know other spinners there in capetown (like John Peers), and about the wednesday (thursday?) night burns at the Reggea Hut in Observatory and the saturday beach burns?

Reggea hut? do you mean 'Cool Runnings' in Obz? Actually you may find the name more particular in a LOTR film, or the books rather. it pays to read once again.

Welcome Foehammer! CT seems to be the most active centre in ZA.

Just my luck to be on the other side of the country....

Hey Guys
Im from JHB South Africa and Im completely addicted wink My gilfried recons that my staves are permanently wielded to my hand tongue2 which is kinda true.

Anyhows cause my friends and I love poi so much we started a local SA fire community (FIRE DESIRE) (not trying to show up HOP.. dont think that can be done tongue2 )

But cut a long story short our aim is to help promote and grow the art of fire dancing in SA. We host regular fire events in and around JHB and advertise any fire events we find out about.

Every Wednesday is Fire Night at Cool Runnings Fourways from about 8PM up.

Come check us out www.firedesiresa.blogspot.com
or search for our facebook group - Fire Desire - Fire poi and staff community

Give me Fuel! Give me FIRE, Give me that which I DESIRE!

I doubt that you are going to have much luck here.

I am the only active Saffrican (unless the others are very well-hidden) and I am never near JHB often enough.

All the best though. Would be nice to get a better networked community....

So you're in SA now then? You still spinning? I'm looking for people to play fire with since the Cape Town Cool Runnings thing died.

Not arguing in the slightest. Like I mentioned elsewhere, it seems that I am in a bit of a dead zone either way (Grahamstown is myself and I think two other people [next year no one, since we are all leaving I think] and I know of no one up the North Coast.)

I think CT and Jozi have most of the activity, but even then. *shrug*

Bruno's site, if it takes off, may be a useful rallying point, but how many people will find it I do not know.

Yeh I know what you mean. I'm in CT, and even here I'm struggling to find people to spin with, other than the FireTribe. All the parties here have suddenly gone all anti-fire since that accident at (I think it was Easter) Vortex. I was all psyched up to play with fire at Rocking the Daisies. Organised with FireTribe to join in and everything, but in the end the official types stopped them from playing (even though they were asked to play in the beginning), so I never got my chance.

It was supposed to be my new years resolution to get back into fire this year. Looks like I might miss that deadline. cry

I'm definitely playing at Coffee Bay from the 7th to 10th Jan though.

I just joined Bruno's site tonight. It does look pretty useful for getting us Saffa spinners together.

Did not hear about that (accident).

Although from what I have been able to gather, safety standards have been pretty lax in any case.

It was 2009 in Cape Town so maybe you wouldn't've heard up there in GTown. I only heard recently myself when I started getting back into fire, and parties.

https://www.capetownalive.co.za/blogs/2904-fire-at-cape-town-easter-vortex-trance-party.html

Since then safety standards have been much less lax. It's really censored things up for fire spinners. Now most parties down here won't allow any open flames at all.

P.S. We can't even play on the beaches here. The police stopped that a few years back when the spectator gatherings got too big and out-of-hand. It was basically just a huge party by then.

Seriously. Cape Town, pretty much the performing arts capital of the country and there's like nowhere to play with fire. mad

That is a bummer.

I meant safety standards by spinners though, although that might be due to laid-back hippy Grahamstown as well.
