Finally, we have a venue for play
Thanks for being so patient, the location for PLAY is now confirmed as being at Fordhall Farm, Market Drayton, Shropshire. TF9 3PS
The gates will be open from 10am Thursday 22nd June until 6pm Monday 26th June (yes that's FIVE days ) and will cost the princely sum of £25 in advance and £30 from two weeks prior to the festival. The tickets will be on sale from Sunday 2nd April right up until the event. The ticket price covers all facilities and events once onsite (bar, food & drink etc excluded of course) all workshops, the show(s), the childrens creche area etc etc etc
A beautiful organic farm set in the countryside (although 5 minutes from the town of Market Drayton) that will make for the most wonderful setting for this years (and hopefully many more) PLAY Festival.
(Please visit the Fordhall Farm website, they need to raise £600,000 by July 2006 to stop this beautiful fertile place from becoming yet another industrial development, if you can help their cause please do so
)
It has great links to the M6 motorway via the A53 and for non car users we will post all info about the local transport situation asap. There isn't a train station that's particularly close but we will be laying on a PLAY Bus to make collections to/from the station as often as possible to help everyone out. There may be a very small charge for this (ie a quid or two) to cover the cost of the driver etc.
I will keep this post updated and of course keep your eyes on the PLAY Website and forum for the most up to date information.
If you could keep your questions in the PLAY Forum we'd much appreciate it as it will help us keep some control and ensure we answer as many as possible. It'll save Malcolms badwidth a little too.....

what dj format was playing in the tent.im guted to miss that fair play to you for putting on some good music.
i think the way people felt about the music and lighting system was split right down the middle.
there was a lot of people complaining that the music was too loud and when it got turned down people complained it was too quite so well done to the people that had to stick up with every one complaining.
as for the lighting the spinners wanted light and other people wanted no light so i think there was a very good compramise to the hole lot aspecialy as they had to swap everything from one generator to another.
as to the music played i thing the bands where great and when it comes down to the djs they had no monitor so couldnt hear a thing and where hastled to play music they didnt have.
as for the variation of music i myself anjoyed alot of it but thats my opinion .
if you have 300+ people in a tent can you imagine how many types of music you would have to play to even come close to pleasing them all .
so a well done to all the sound people i saw how hard they worked to bring you a good festival.

an idea for 2007. just an idea. what about a UV cannon or two in the big top? spinning in UV light is cool for UV active toys. i don't know what the power needed for this is but i am just suggesting it. there was one at falmouth and that was really coool.

As part of Smile's development I'm looking into a way to play visuals and music as loud as people can take it, at any time of night.
It's probably going to take a geodome wrapped in chickenwire, a low power FM transmitter, and a lot of little FM radios and headphones.
And it'll all run off renewable energy too

the marquee used at the front gate would have been a perfect size for another chill out area. if there was another one like it closer to what was going on. i am sure with a small light or two in there and some hay bails around to sit on/ sock up some noise would have been a good idea?

sound waves are a bit like ripples in a pond, thats why i said stick the rig in one corner, the sound waves would be absorbed by a crowd moshing infront of the stak, less wires, more sound less hassle.
( i know PLAY is not a music festival or rave but the knowledge still comes in handy)

Dunc is correct in that it was a cable I needed and didn't have, but I'd just like to add that before I arrived at the festival I had no idea I'd be behind the sound desk (I paid for my ticket), and I'd never even seen the sound system before it was set up. Still managed to mike up and mix a 9 piece ska band though.
I did the best I could in less than ideal conditions with unfamiliar kit. So Ed, I'm slightly offended you choose to refer to me like a blithering incompetent, when I doubt you could have plugged your Ipod in either. For the record, I have a degree in audio technology and a home studio.
No hard feelings, I completely understand that it must have been incredibly frustrating, but I feel I should at least give some background to the situation...

An unlicenced frequency would need special recievers and transmitters that would end up costing a packet, so I think I'll end up using something like this, so anyone can bring a cheap FM radio along to listen in with. The range is only 100m, but even those little FM transmitters you use with iPods are illegal here, so the chickenwire would be used to keep the tansmissions from being detected outside the dome (Guess what Prodigy track I'm thinking of right now).

Yes, frustrating at the time it was! All the psyching myself up to go on stage (which took all day, and the help of others) would have been in vain. I get major stage fright, and it took three hours of hugs to get me to go through with it...

I've had my fair share of issues with engineers myself, having played in loads of bands and whatnot, so I know how annoying it is when admittedly stupid techie issues threaten to mess up a performance (and as far as stupid issues go, not being able to plug an ipod in to a festival sound system ranks fairly high).
Apologies if I was a bit short with you at the time, I was slightly stressed because I'd been told Sym was organising the music for the renegade show, and he'd gone to bed, and no sign of Dunc or Polarity who had the cable I needed... Ahhh, the fun life of the techie
Top skillz in the show though, well impressed!!

I was told that "organising the music for the renegade show" would be a case of pressing play on the CD player next to the desk - and I was told I was doing it about an hour before it was due to start. There was no way I could have done it on Sunday night, and seeing as it was monkey work anyway, I thought someone would have been able to do it. Really, pressing play and stop - it's not a skilled job now, is it? (Also, I'm not sure how me being there would have fixed the cable issue - I can't just make them appear out of thin air you know )

I was impressed with the sound set up and running.
I did volunteer my services to help with the desk before the festival (via ravehead) and on a couple of occassions with Polarity and Duncduring the festival.
I also had a Y-lead with me just for connecting MP3 players to the desk (didn't have any phono-jack adapters though)
I will also offer my sevices for next year to assist with the sound set up, if required.
All in all i have no complaints about any part of the weekend, any issues I had at the time seemed to be resolved to the best of anyones abilities at the time
And Ed you rocked in the renegade show, that was one tough performance to follow up (especially with something that had been cobbled together about 15 minutes earlier) but i still gave it a go and enjoyed myself lots
I was impressed with the sound set up and running.
I did volunteer my services to help with the desk before the festival (via ravehead) and on a couple of occassions with Polarity and Duncduring the festival.
I also had a Y-lead with me just for connecting MP3 players to the desk (didn't have any phono-jack adapters though)
I will also offer my sevices for next year to assist with the sound set up, if required.
All in all i have no complaints about any part of the weekend, any issues I had at the time seemed to be resolved to the best of anyones abilities at the time

I admit i hated most of the music too, I was very much relieved when i got to put my ipod on one afternoon and had a good old boogie to some funky oldskool east coast hiphop! (shame it ran out of battery really!)
it seems to me that the only way that a majority of people will be kept happy is with funky underground hiphop (which i slightly specialise in!) cos it seems this placates the people who dont like full-on psytrance/dnb mentalness whilst those people who do like the full on mentalness are generally still happy if theres something that isnt full on guitar business.
