TICKETS UPDATE 11th April 2006

==============================

TICKETS ARE NOW ONSALE!! bounce You can follow this link to the online Shop to make your purchase. If you buy a ticket with the forthcoming DVD you will get a £3 discount. Please note that the price of £25 will only be valid until the 13th June

Finally, we have a venue for play biggrin

Thanks for being so patient, the location for PLAY is now confirmed as being at Fordhall Farm, Market Drayton, Shropshire. TF9 3PS

The gates will be open from 10am Thursday 22nd June until 6pm Monday 26th June (yes that's FIVE days biggrin ) and will cost the princely sum of £25 in advance and £30 from two weeks prior to the festival. The tickets will be on sale from Sunday 2nd April right up until the event. The ticket price covers all facilities and events once onsite (bar, food & drink etc excluded of course) all workshops, the show(s), the childrens creche area etc etc etc

A beautiful organic farm set in the countryside (although 5 minutes from the town of Market Drayton) that will make for the most wonderful setting for this years (and hopefully many more) PLAY Festival.

(Please visit the Fordhall Farm website, they need to raise £600,000 by July 2006 to stop this beautiful fertile place from becoming yet another industrial development, if you can help their cause please do so hug )

It has great links to the M6 motorway via the A53 and for non car users we will post all info about the local transport situation asap. There isn't a train station that's particularly close but we will be laying on a PLAY Bus to make collections to/from the station as often as possible to help everyone out. There may be a very small charge for this (ie a quid or two) to cover the cost of the driver etc.

I will keep this post updated and of course keep your eyes on the PLAY Website and forum for the most up to date information.

If you could keep your questions in the PLAY Forum we'd much appreciate it as it will help us keep some control and ensure we answer as many as possible. It'll save Malcolms badwidth a little too.....

Hope to see you all there!

I agree thoroughly with what coleman said, it's one of the (many) reasons I thoguht Play was so amazing.

I've never had the balls to take any of my poi to a club for fear of being hoofed out, or just idiots blindly walking into me, or just not having enoug space....and the shy factor smile

the settup at Play was awesome, and the music was great, ad reasonably varied, and there were always places I found to go and totally chill (and not just the outstanding chill out chocolate tent!), or poi in peace.

The Cinema was an awesome idea also, though I must admit appart from seeing the previous years play DVD, there were always other places I wanted to be than sat idly watching a movie.

Just got back from getting married, so I didn’t have the time to thank Dunc and the rest of Play Crew for another great play festival. Here are some of the photos I took https://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/firetwisteruk/album?.dir=/4b92re2&.src...
when I have the time to look at the videos and the rest of the photos I will put the up over 12 hours of video and 600 photos. If anyone sees themselves on any of the photos and would like a better quality one email me with the photo number and I will send it.

Thanks for the feedback mate, it's greatly welcomed smile

It's a shame you felt there wasn't enough space to play in, but with such a large big top I'm sure you could have found space to play in that was well enough lit and not directly infront of a speaker. And as mentioned there was also the bonfire area, the cinema tent, space outside the big top and the dome provided by Chocolate Tree. Did you try any of those areas? If so feed back would be greatly appreciated smile

The pre recorded music wasn't as eclectic as we'd originaly envisaged, primarily due to my 20gig player full of tunes dissapearing from sight Wednesday daytime and reapearing Monday morning frown so next year you can expect to see vast improvement for evening music. Although I think our mix of live tunes was great.

Also the lighting will be far better next year, I felt it was very poor and probably the single most dissapointing aspect of the play evenings/night time but was solely due to technical problems with the generator setup. Problems we simply couldn't fix.

Although tastes were hugely mixed at play, thumping D&B one night and Psytrance another seemed to go down really well on the whole and we quietened things down lots on Saturday and Sunday night so those not wanting to "boogie till 2" could relax a little. When folks did to complain that they didn't like the tunes we changed them smile So remember, if there's something you don't like tell us at the time and we'll do what we can to keep the balance right and everyone happy during the festival otherwise it takes us a year to make it better! smile

I know some folks didn't like the psychedelic band Strap The Button playing so late in the evening (well, it seemed to be split 50/50 that the dance music heads wanted more dance and the rockers seemed to love it) They were due to play at 8pm but because they missed their sound check and the rest of the show had to be on time we decided that as they were there they'd may aswell go on anyway. It wasn't the best timing as they really were suited to playing earlier but I still think they were awesome and incredibly unique, something that is very important to us at PLAY Festival.

I would like an extra covered play space away from the main area but as the big top accounts for over 40% of the entire festivals cost it just isn't feasible to have another bigtop unless someone wasnts to donate one to us for free (hint hint anyone out there with a spare big top wink )

The only other complaint I got over the weekend was about the music playing so loud/so late in the evening. But, if folks will ignore the Quiet Camping area, pitch their tent as close to the big top as possible and then expect to sleep in countryside silence at 1am they will only be dissapointed. It's a shame it wasn't used very much as quiet camping was lovely, largely empty and almost completely noise free. We asked almost everyone in there about the noise levels from the big top and everyone in there, even those with very small babies, praised the sound level reduction foun din quiet camping. The only complaint was about someones generator running all night long, I didn't get to find out who it was that was so inconsiderate that they left a noisey genny running through the night so couldn't do anything about it once the complaint had been made but it won't be repeated next year that's for certain smile

 Written by: Cole

i liked the fact that there was music on late into the night - i think the main activities we do at play (spinning and manipulation) are far more closely connected to music than the core juggling arts that multitudes of other conventions cater for.

i had never been to a convention where we could recreate the 'spinning in a club' vibe but with the added opportuinity to spin with lots of space and loads of other wicked spinners to discuss what we've discovered - its a great environment as far as i'm concerned

I think that statement by Cole pretty much sums it up; we're not a convention, we're a festival smile

as for next year, i used to dance in a few big named clubs and well i am buddy with many a good DJ. from funky house to psy trance. so if you want someone to come along next year just ask me and i will see what i can do for you. i am sure i can find some people willing to do it for little pennies/ free.

Thanks for the feedback Dunc much appreciated. I found this went the other way for me. Music coming on too early in the morning. I found it really difficult being woken every morning at 8am to loud music, but it wasn't from the big top, but from the trader next door, but we lived with it and it didn't spoil the weekend, just meant i was tired.

The music coming from the big top was fine, you either went in there and enjoyed it or you found a spot outside and shared a shminky.
biggrin

I had a huge array of tunes in a box in my car all weekend. I didnt get them out because there was always someone else who wanted to play a few and I was quite happy to listen to what they were doing.

Mags did suggest playing after renegade but it was getting a bit late and I had to resume taxi duties at 8am frown

Dunc - when you start making plans for next year give me a shout and I'll help out with sound and lighting. I know a few people who would be more than willing to offer equipment and services at reasonable rates.

i think dunc and the rest of the crew did their best to please everyone as much as possible.

i cant really comment on the early morning sets as i was fast asleep, and as sym, step and pretty much anyone that was camped that close to the big top would know i could sleep through an earthquake ubblol

well............ at least until about 11am when my tent turned into a sweat lodge wink

dunc as has been said i know some dj's and a few live bands that i could try and talk into playing

I managed to find places to sit, chat and play once it got dark bov - there was:

the campsite
the area just outside the big top (which was almost as lovely and warm as inside the big top)
the firespinning area
and the campfire (which had the added bonus of mags' sultry tones and tipsychutters, the blues vocal specialist biggrin)

With no glowing or fire toys, I think I clubbed about 4 people while trying to spin during the evenings, because I didn't realise they were walking nearby and they couldn't see me or my clubs.

Anywhere I found with enough light to spin in was too close to the big top and everything was drowned out by the music - not a problem when I'm trying to spin, I've had more than plenty of practise ignoring music I don't like when I'm spinning, but if I'm also trying to hold a conversation with someone, I don't like having to shout at them to be heard.

Basically, I wasn't expecting the big top to be the only place with enough light to see what I was doing in the evening while also being filled with enough music to stop conversations at a reasonable volume.
Obviously I was expecting it to be more like last year. An assumption, true, but a not unreasonable one.

I had a great time during the day for the whole weekend, just not during friday or saturday nights after the shows. I even slept straight through the music after I'd gone to bed.
Basically though, it'd be nice to have somewhere lit and not as loud with enough space to spin.

Indeed, and it looks like I'm very much in the minority, so while I'm sure that Dunc'll take what I'm saying on board, it's probably not going to change.

it didn't bother me that much at the time so i didn't express that to the people standing near the volume button so to turn that into constructive criticism, i'd say being able to hear a low murmur of people talking over the music would definitely be preferable to alienating people from the big top (obviously that comment doesn't apply to the live bands) ubbrollsmile

Maybe with just a shift about of camping, big top and chilled/ traders area there could be something for everyone. I'm sure Bov isn't talking about large over head stadium type lighting. Just a bit of low level lighting that at leased shows an outline of someone moving about with clubs/staff/poi/balls in their hands. That way people won't walk into them.

I think maybe next time if the chocolate tree do come again they need to be set up away from the big top so there is a chill out area away from the noise. Their chilled music was constantly being drowned out by the big top in the evenings.

umm seems to me that in translation: "not broke, won't fix, it's your fault anyway"

erm, i agree with rory quite strongly.

considering the tent was for juggling activities the lighting was atrocious. i believe it was mentioned at the time by a few people.

i found that chocolate tree wasn't much help to get away from the extremely loud dance music, because it was right next to the big top anyway.

Soft background music? ubblol

i mainly went and span fire lots instead, and only went in the big top very rarely because to be honest, i really hated 99% of the music played, which wouldn't have been too bad if it hadn't been so loud.

Not wanting to overly bitch, but just to let you know rory isn't alone in his opinions on the matter.

the important question is "did you express your views at the time?"

if you didn't, it really is a bit a bit late to complain if that's all you want to do.

if you don't have any constructive criticism to help ease the situation next year, publically venting your frustrations long after anything can be done to change your feelings is pretty pointless innit?

Not really - the volume of the music meant that I couldn't use the big top to just hang out with people and do some juggling/spinning/whatever with them.

After going to bed I slept right through all the music coming from the big top - I have no complaints with the level of music in general, just that there wasn't really anywhere else to go that was lit during the evening.

Trying to sum up what I'm trying to say - If people want the big top turned into a club during the night, that's fine with me, as long as I can have somewhere to do what I want as well.

bov, when the tunes got too loud for me an di needed to chill i went to the chocolate tree or sencory solutions tent, they had seats, nice low level background music and you could sit and have a smoke with the stall holders etc

I don't smoke, so I wasn't really keen on that option.

Also, I didn't want to spend the whole night sat down - I wanted to have a nice relaxed play, and I'm really not comfortable swinging my clubs around near stuff that people are trying to sell.

The music in those tents was hardly at background level either - this drifts back towards the volume of the big top, it was still pretty damned loud for a fair way away, blasting over the sounds in the stalls.

So, to paraphrase.. 'shut and and stop whining, because we're not going to do anything about your complaints anyway'.

What the hell are the hug and peace for?

It's fairly damned obvious that you really don't give a crap about what I'm trying to say, next time don't bother putting in the graemlins to try and placate me while at the same time throwing insults.
