ken livingstone (not bad but horribly tainted by having the word 'labour' next to him) is looking like being voted out, to be replaced by a racist, classist, arrogant, intentionally stupid, policy free puppet.

i am very glad i am back in scotland and nowhere near the farce.

londoners, what on earth are you doing????? do you* all just read the evening standard and daily mail as gospel?

Rob

(disclaimer - thread will be changed if ken wins, against the odds....)

*you, in this case, means most likely not actual HOP goers, who seem to be fairly well clued up, but londoners in general

(disclaimer 2 - i usually try to be fairly open when starting threads, allowing for both sides, or at least giving a much bigger argument for/against something, but in this case i just can't see it - there is no earthly reason i can see why boris is better than ken. and i've trawled, a lot. so, apologies if this offends you, but i assure you, it doesn't offend you nearly as much as the probable election result offends me frown )

Whether the rest of his Wiki entry has just been tampered with for comedic effect I don't know, though I fear it's actually an accurate summary of his career...

Though I suspected enough voters would be fed up of Ken and not enough would vote for Brian now, I was surprised to hear his name even as the provisional result, not to mention shocked to see BNP coming so closely behind the Greens as well.

Reading the news this morning makes me all too aware that the majority of people are also too censored stupid to be trusted with something as powerful as a vote.

(And hey, Spanner, you think that's bad, check the result for Charlestown and, worse yet, this London result. More proof of the need for some kind of test of independent rational decision making before being allowed a vote)

Erm.. I rather disagree. People will vote for who they're told to vote for.
Back in the 80's the sun ran a headline regarding Maggie's victory: "It's the Sun what won it", and they were absolutely spot on. When the media espouses the views of its owners, and in doing so panders to the alarmist, short-sighted, selfish tendencies of its gullible audience, is it any wonder that we end up with the likes of Thatcher, Blair, and now that complete buffoon in positions of political power?

Some will. But, others will have voted cos of what they themselves thought.

As you know, a lot of labour candidates in the local elections have been ousted cos some people dissaprove of the national labour govt and consider it a valid choice to show that in the local votes.

Maybe some have voted for Boris for those kinds of reasons?

The problem is that at the moment, everything is not going well.

First time buyers have been completly priced out of the market.

They've run out of rich people to add more tax to, so now they're taxing the poor more.

I heard on the radio that half of the Polish immigrants that came to the UK, have actually now left, because the pound has dropped so low, and they now have better opportunities back home, that its actually not worth them staying in the UK.

Along with everything else becoming more expensive, petrol is a prime example Its not looking good. Brown wasn't voted into parliment, not even by his own party. Mysteriously any other candidates dropped out of the election. Funny that. So this is the first chance that the public, and that anyone, has had a chance to show how they feel about that. And so thats whats happened.

So I think that people have decided to vote for anyone but labour, possibly not always paying attention to what the alternative is. Because I think the attitude that most people have at the moment, is that it can't really get much worse, our economys a joke, so lets have some fun and vote in boris.

Personally I find it frustrating that the focus is on London's new mayor and not the rest of the country. After all, contray to what some people seem to think, the huge majority of Britains, don't actually live in London. rolleyes

I've become pretty disengaged and cynical about voting. Left with a huge debt from uni, thats growing by nearly 1k every year that I can't even begin to pay off, and with no chance of buying my own house for the forseeable future, no matter who comes into power, they're not going to fix that. For me its too late, the damage has already been done.

Yes, but at least the Spaniards had the good sense to re-elect the PSOE in March when things were going well in general. They didn't switch over to Rajoy.

Jeepers Doc, there's a goodly proportion of native English speakers here (and on any other online forum you care to mention) who do a worse job of writing and spelling... If you start correcting them you're on a never-ending, thankless job.

Anyway, Boris...
Racist, homophobic, pro-war... What's not to like? wink

Yes but they can't correct my Spanish back at me. And they'll take offense if I correct their English because it's their mother tongue.
