This one is for all the geeky and anal people like me out there who love making completely meaningless lists of stuff they like. I reckon you can tell a lot about a persons personality from the type of stuff they like. I love being obsessive about details and getting really involved in in-depth discussions about minor details in movies (don't even get me started on lord of the rings) wink

The best part is, if we spot a post by someone with a similar list that has a film that we haven't seen, it's a fair bet we'll like it. But think carefully: there are a lot of films. Choose the ones that have affected you, influenced you or touched you the most over the years. And if it's a film no-one will ever have heard of, give a very brief outline!

Thread #2 will be albums, #3 will be sexual positions wink

So without further ado, here are my top 10 movies.

1. A Flight of Dragons (animation from 1982 feat. James Earl Jones. As a kid, I loved it as a magical adventure. As an adult, it's fascinating allegory on science vs. religion, and how ultimately they're two sides of the same coin)

2. Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Blinding soundtrack, amazing visuals, totally nailed Tolkiens world. Geek alert!)

3. Pi (Again, great soundtrack feat Aphex Twin etc, great cinematography, fantastic concept about patterns emerging in nature)

4. Evil Dead 2 (Bruce Campbell's best ever performance, so funny but so ingenious at the same time)

5. Shawshank redemption (One of the most uplifting films ever made. An inspiration, and one of the best demonstrations of why never to let go of hope I've ever seen)

6. Donnie Darko (As a mood piece this works like no other film I've ever seen. Brilliantly ambiguous, Jake Gylenhall is blinding as donnie)

7. Akira (Best anime ever. Full stop. Needs repeated viewings, but the denoument is mind-blowing if you understand what happened!)

8. Aliens (One of the great action movies. The Alien queen fight at the end is absolute cinema legend)

9. Hero (purely for the artistry that went into the cinematography and choreograhpy, especially the scene where the two heros are fighting over the lake. Easily the most beautiful film I've seen, and I loved the concept of even the bad guy is trying to do something good)

10. City of God (pure realism. One of the most authentic films I've seen in ages, and incredibly shocking and moving. Great film)

I may edit this list at some point when I think of movies I've missed that should have been there.

Feel free to rip the censored out of me for being sad. I'm just interested in what other people like, I might learn something....

No I haven't Ravehead!

But on the subject of New Zealand films -

'Braindead'! - Great early Peter Jackson.
'I kick arse for the Lord!'

Was shocked when 'Heavenly Creatures' came out and it was like 'WTF?!' this film actually looks like it has a budget! That was also a favourite.

As a kid I used to love alot of the Hong Knog comedy horror films such as

'Mr Vampire' (and its sequels)

'Encounters of the Spooky Kind' (Featuring the great Sammo Hung - who according to my parents was my lookalike when I was a kid)

'A Chinese Ghost Story' - in retrospect was quite corny with a terrible 80s Canton-pop soundtrack but still a visually stunning epic (the giant tongue/tree woman gave me nightmares for weeks)

'Evil Cat' (evil cat spirit possesses several people and goes on a murder spree)

Sagetree: I'm feeling ya on Anchorman. Didn't really like it the first time, but afterwards I was thinking back to bits and cracking up. It get's funnier the more you watch it... "I'm just gonna put it out there.... I wanna be on you"...."It's so hot... Milk was a bad choice"

"NEWS TEAM, ASSEMBLE!!!"
"We're right here Ron."
"Oh, didn't see you there"
"We've been here practically the entire time you have Ron"

I'm amazed by how wrong you all are.

I mean, politics and ethics are subjective but the quality of a movie is clearly a measurable, tangable fact.

I won't go into my top 10 but how has nobody mentioned:

The Wall
Apacolypse Now
The Godfather
The Mission
The Shining

Oh that's right, because you're all 12 years old. wink wink wink

I guess there's a difference between movies you like and good movies.

It just seems that there are some classics that have really not been mentioned.

I mean, I've got my personal favorites too like:
Run Lola Run
The Big Blue
True Romance (my favorite QT movie actually)
Goodfellas
Momento

But I'd never suggest that they were GOOD.

Bah... carry on. You guys can fight over which Toy Story was the best. wink

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

oh man, neon so on point with mr vampire and encounters of the spooky kind, channel 4 showed these and others as a series called chinese ghost stories when i was a kid, loved them but never seen any since them

dead mans shoes is indeed an absolute incredible film, filmed near me, and the directors cousin worked in a chip shop near me

la haine - direction ohmigod, coleman yes that shot is amazin, still deciding how exactly they did it, im guessin a r/c helicopter/hot air baloon, but what about the shot they come into paris on the open top double decker bus, i rewoud that shot about 4 times when i first saw it

if we talk about anime, my faves

flying island of laputa - another i saw when i was a kid and then rewatched and realised why i loved it so much

vampire hunter D - the daywalker before blade existed, ive always wanted to be a vampire, but one that could daywalk, i know im one of the only people i know that leave an allniter and actually greet and loves the sunshine

i dont know why i didnt mention fear and loathing earlier, to me fight club and fear and loathing are probably two of the greatest films ever, and also both should be read in the written form and all the other boooks by the same author

We are not all 12 years old (thankfully)

And yes we did miss out some great movies but we were only listing our personal favourites.

The Shining is fantastic but I havn't seen any of the others in your first list so i can't comment on them.

And don't diss toy story, but i have to admit i did prefer Madagascar biggrin

there is no way i could ever pick a top 10. i'm a movie fanatic, i think i spend more money on movies than i do on food. tongue but there are several already listed i agree with (pay it forward TOTALLY makes me cry every time too).

and to throw out some others, hmmmm....ok so these aren't all the best movies of all time, but some of them are just ones i could watch over and over without ever getting bored (and, in fact, have several times)

Empire Records

Pirates of the Caribbean (btw, i loved the new one)

Chronicles of Riddick

Groove (yay VT!)

Ever After

Sliding Doors BEST "what if" movie ever, imo

anything by M. Night Shamaylan but i particularly enjoyed The Village

LOTR trilogy

The Chronicles of Narnia yes i'm including the future made films in this because i've always loved the books and thoroughly enjoyed the first movie

The Italian Job

Finding Nemo

The Wedding Crashers

The Labyrinth

The Princess Bride

Clue

The Butterfly Effect

The King and I a true classic

Thirteen Ghosts

Saw 1 and 2 love the twisted mind of that guy, is that wrong?

Sleepers ok i can't watch this one over and over, once was enough but a powerful movie to me

Shawshank Redemption

Notting Hill

Playing by Heart

10 Things I Hate About You Taming of the Shrew was always my fav Shakespeare play, so i loved the new take on it

ok i'll just stop now before the list gets too unruly. biggrin

Yeah, butterfly effect was really good. Have you seen the version with the proper ending on the DVD? Where he goes back to before he was born? That's nasty...

I too loved the 1st Mortal Kombat movie. Apart from Christopfer Lambert. He messes up any film he's in, apart from Highlander...

A little side information. Rumor has it that Mortal Kombat 3 the movie will come out soon. I forgot the name, but if you search it up hard enough, you can find some of the cast. I believe this new one will have Quan Chi.

Little shop is really good! Although I have to confess, I HATED rocky horror, I've never liked it. Always came off as too pretentious for me. Delibertely trying to shock at the expense of decent plot/acting. Very cult, and I admire it for that, but just not my thing I guess.... biggrin

Im thinking of new films all the time. Batman Begins gets a mention, so I want to put forward Batman Returns, one of the few good Batmans, I wasnt too thrilled with the penguin all the way through but Michelle Pfeiffer and was it Micheal Keaton? Where brilliant all the way through.

All the other Batmans (except the first with the Joker) sucked so badly. Especially the flop with Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, Robin, Batman AND Batgirl shamelessly stuffed into the plot, and too camp and OTT to work properlly, especialy Uma's acting what one arth was all that about.

Yeah, Batman and Robin was really bad. Arnie as Mr Freeze?? "You're not taking ME to the cooler!" *shudders at horrific pun* wink And the Bat-suit having nipples? Bwahahahaha! Even the 60s Batman made for TV movie was better than that. Actually that was classic.

Batman hanging off a rope ladder from the bat-copter with an obviously inflatable shark attached to his leg: "Hand me down.... the shark repllent.... bat-spray..." ubblol

I got the boxset of Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Mirrormask today, mmmmm, yummy! I haven't seen Mirrormask yet, I'm going to watch that tonight.

What did everyone think of Moulin Rouge? I couldn't even watch all of it, but loads of people I know loved it. confused wink

That was another thing, I didnt like the way they used songs from pop culture today and used them in the film. It just didnt seem too fit. It would have been better if they just used instroments and played more traditional sort of music for the routenes and not alterd songs allready released today/recently.
