This one is for all the geeky and anal people like me out there who love making completely meaningless lists of stuff they like. I reckon you can tell a lot about a persons personality from the type of stuff they like. I love being obsessive about details and getting really involved in in-depth discussions about minor details in movies (don't even get me started on lord of the rings) wink

The best part is, if we spot a post by someone with a similar list that has a film that we haven't seen, it's a fair bet we'll like it. But think carefully: there are a lot of films. Choose the ones that have affected you, influenced you or touched you the most over the years. And if it's a film no-one will ever have heard of, give a very brief outline!

Thread #2 will be albums, #3 will be sexual positions wink

So without further ado, here are my top 10 movies.

1. A Flight of Dragons (animation from 1982 feat. James Earl Jones. As a kid, I loved it as a magical adventure. As an adult, it's fascinating allegory on science vs. religion, and how ultimately they're two sides of the same coin)

2. Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Blinding soundtrack, amazing visuals, totally nailed Tolkiens world. Geek alert!)

3. Pi (Again, great soundtrack feat Aphex Twin etc, great cinematography, fantastic concept about patterns emerging in nature)

4. Evil Dead 2 (Bruce Campbell's best ever performance, so funny but so ingenious at the same time)

5. Shawshank redemption (One of the most uplifting films ever made. An inspiration, and one of the best demonstrations of why never to let go of hope I've ever seen)

6. Donnie Darko (As a mood piece this works like no other film I've ever seen. Brilliantly ambiguous, Jake Gylenhall is blinding as donnie)

7. Akira (Best anime ever. Full stop. Needs repeated viewings, but the denoument is mind-blowing if you understand what happened!)

8. Aliens (One of the great action movies. The Alien queen fight at the end is absolute cinema legend)

9. Hero (purely for the artistry that went into the cinematography and choreograhpy, especially the scene where the two heros are fighting over the lake. Easily the most beautiful film I've seen, and I loved the concept of even the bad guy is trying to do something good)

10. City of God (pure realism. One of the most authentic films I've seen in ages, and incredibly shocking and moving. Great film)

I may edit this list at some point when I think of movies I've missed that should have been there.

Feel free to rip the censored out of me for being sad. I'm just interested in what other people like, I might learn something....

i don't remember giving you loads of crap dave but sorry if i did hug

however, i don't ever recommend that someone watch irreversible (although i can think of a few select situations where i might suggest someone watch it).

i do think its one of the most unique films i've seen though.

i tell people how much i think of requium too but i always warn them: it starts in the gutter and keeps heading downwards until at the end of the movie you're left with absolutely nothing good to hang onto.

but just because the subject matter is harsh, doesn't mean i thought the film was bad.

and yeah, irreversible did finish with a return to innocence but i don't agree that it had a happy ending in the slightest - don't know about you, but that film does not leave me in a good place.

maus - you soooo stole my taste - can i have it back...? wink

forgot about la heine ubblove that film

possibly has my favourite tracking shot in any film ever - inside to outside the flat, over the dj and off the balcony...

hence 'ending'... I guess the final revelation at the 'end' just gave everything else in the film a final kick in the gut despite the pleasant dreamy imagery...

Honestly I can write an entire book about that film...

La Heine? Haven't seen it but you do have a thing for Vincent Cassel don't you? (Unless Film Trivia of the Day - Director Matthew Kassoviz starred as Amelie's Love Interest - quite the cutie ubblove)

hence the quivering wreckage - like requium, i find it to be a deeply pessemistic yet realistic view of the human condition.

in short, it makes me sad.

suprised no-one has picked old boy or brick though - has no-one seen these films or are you all mental and just don't like them? wink

very different movies, but both of them totally blew me away!

Not sure if I've seen it...is that the one where the dudes in prison and the when he gets out has to get revenge on the person that put him there or something?

Been a good couple of years since I've seen it if it is the same one-was dang good tho!

Old boy didn't make my list, but only just! I mentioned it in a previous post I think. It's a fanstatic film, really shocking. The scene in the tunnel where he fight off about 15 guys with a hammer is amazingly shot.

Talking of moving films, how about Hotel Rwanda. Saw that the other day, what a movie. It's the bit when Don Cheadle says "As soon as the West sees what's going on, they'll help us" and Joacim Phoenix says "No, they'll watch it on TV, say God, that's terrible, and go back to eating their breakfasts". That made me feel terrible...

Coleman - just be thankful that you were reduced to a quickering wreck - just reminds you that you are still a human being...

Brick was a brilliant film - slightly impenetrable at first due to the deliberately Raymond Chandleresque dialogue but brilliant contortionistic plot...

Old Boy again was brilliant - reveange thriller-cum-greek-tragedy.
I tend to pick films that affect me on a personal level, regardless of quality.
Maus - There's been plenty of films with a similar plot (Wasn't Old Boy was it?)

i just realised i missed off a film i adore in just about every way possible:

mulholland drive ubblove

needed to watch it three times but on that third viewing it felt like i had just managed to perfectly reassemble an antique watch i'd found in a thousand pieces.

although it is yet another flick with a dark, depressing ending (an ending which taints everything you've seen in the rest of the story).

now, if only spotless mind were real, i could wipe my memory and watch mulholland drive for the first time again... ubbidea confused ubblove

ubbloveMullholland drive was amazing...one of those films that leaves you dumbfounded at the end of it.

Another film i actually reallyliked and has to go on the list..

Rules of Attraction.

Was really suprised by it, mainly because i can't stand James Van der Beek...

But all in all i was really impressed by it! smile

Would you believe or say I was crazy if I managed to figure out 'Mullholland Drive' within the first viewing? (or at least form a possible theory on what it was about)

My only gripe with 'Old Boy' was that the actor who played the villian was FAR too young for the reasons behind his actions to be plausible. I've not seen 'Sympathy for Mr Vengeance' or 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance' but they ARE on my list!

Actually one film I REALLY love was 'Kill Bill: Vol 1'. A lot of people have complained that it lacked depth and the characters were cardboard cutouts. But Actually found ALOT of depth in the characters if you read behind the lines... Plus it introduced me to the concept of the ROPE DART which in turn allowed me to start doing poi after 2 years of faffing about...

No!
tongue

I really enjoyed Kill Bill aswell, and to be honest depth wasn't really what i was hoping to gain from it- i wanted to see a hot woman kick ass with a samurai sword! biggrin

However you're correct Dave, i also found a lot of "hidden depth" moments.

“When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you’re doing his will.”

and...

then Black mambe to Nikki Copperheads daughter after she kills her:

"It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it coming. When you grow up, if you still feel raw about it, I'll be waiting. "

they're on my hard drive too tongue

i can believe you got mulholland dr on the first viewing dave smile

i got the basic idea a little way into my second viewing and by end of the third watch, the only plot devices i didn't have a completely solid idea about were the 'aunt' and the cowboy.

still not sure about the 'aunt' ubblol

Kill Bill: Vol 1

I found it really tragic that Hatori Hanzo (the sword maker) had to give up his oath to God that he'd 'never make an instrustment od death again' in order to help The Bride get her revenge.

During the confrontation between The Bride an O-Ren Ishii. I sensed that O-Ren felt that The Bride did deserve her revenge and they both knew that they were similar in that both their lives have been shaped by personal tragedies and their hesitancy in the final battle was due to this and a respect for each other.

I also got the sense that despite becoming Yakuza Queen that O-Ren felt that her parents would be ashamed of her. As neither of them were 'bad' in any way and being a Yakuza but bring dishonour to her family (her protectiveness over her 'Chinese-heritage' seems to indicate this even further). Her ascension to Yakuza Queen was probably meant as the ultimate revenge for her parent's death but in getting to the top as both an assassin and Queen she lost her way. The Bride's retribution coming her way was probably the best way for her to find redemption. But ironically she would put up a great fight because it would be the ultimate honour for the person who killed her to defeat such a great warrior...

Re: Nikki - apparently in a few decades time, this WILL be the subject of the third Kill Bill film. With the grown-up Nikki tracking down Black Mamba to avenge her mother...

I can see it Cole - but with FAR less freudian overtones... and no Roy Orbison...

Gary Oldman doesn't have Frank Booth's gas mask but he does have the most hilariously overwrought method of swallowing pills...

but lord of the rings cant be there for simply being a cheesy pile of sheeyat. its alrite, and the way they made middle earth in film form is amazing, but with weak soundtrack, and uber cheesiness, made something that was potentially incredible a bit crap really,

Thank you! lol Once you've seen one CG orc battle, you've seen them all.

Heres a few films I loved:

The Birds
Jackie Brown
Magnolia
Hero
If These Walls Could Talk 2
The Hours - (I love Julian Moore and Meryl Streep)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Caberet
Girl, Interrupted

Two films I absoulty must watch are Mirrormask and The Hand that Rocks The Cradle

frank booth is a despicable character and i feel oldman's cop in leon was supposed to be too - i just found it hard to be scared of him for some reason shrug

as for the way he cracks capsules in his teeth and swallows all the mini pills inside sideways - absolute genius!

that's the way round slow release caps people wink

admittedly in a *completely harsh murdering b*st*rd* way...but still cool.

Think i need to watch Blue Velvet again....it has been a while, so i may well end up agreeing with you after all....

...actually no i take that back....if if i did end up agreeing with you i would be far too stubborn to admit it.

I'm right.
