What do you do with your hair when you're spinning fire poi?
I've got long, almost waist length hair, and DO NOT want to chop it off in some short "trendy" do. I had my hair really short once and hated it.
So what's a long haired aspiring fire poi dancer to do?

I am very scared of burning my hair.
I have been doing poi without fire for many years...but I am going to start doing with fire sometimes. I made a beanie of a Nomex hood I bought from a rally drivers' shop. I know it's not 100% safe, but makes me feel a bit better. Nomex is "firesafe", but it can also burn if some fuel goes on it.
Anyway I think it is ok to have beanie (all hair inside of it) and hood of a college. I don't care so much how I look, I prefer to keep my hair safe.
I got an other idea, maybe you could make a bun of hair and cover it with scarf. You still could burn your upper hair, but this would cover your long hair.

Two plaits either side of your hair, tuck them into your top and wear a bandanna over the top. My hair stays out when mum isnt there to watch me but i wear a bandanna over it, i dont like the smell of singed hair.

loopy...i know what you mean .. so my sugestion is that you make a bun but not the one on the almost top of your head..but one near your neck...so.. make a "low-bun" and wear a beanie large enough to protect all off your hair.. if ure afraid of looking stupid ..dont..when you start to twirl fire no one will care how you look , they be like :

I wear a hoodie, frequently with a hat underneath (my hair's waist length). It's not perfect for flexibility.. I used to just have a woolly hat I could fit all my hair in, and damp down the top a bit- but it disappeared at a Manc meet..

Has anyone experimented with hair sprays/gels etc and can tell me which ones don't increase the burnyness of your hair?
I've had my hair come apart half way through performances (although has only been an aesthetic problem, not safety) and would love a setting spray or something...

I'm not near 30... but yes, when done properly, I agree short hair can look very good.
I'm still scarred from my bob in year five and growing out my fringe, so I'm not ready for short hair yet...
