Just started browsing around here, and it's good to see so many other spinners out there. I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but has anyone noticed any type of poi/spinning action in movies, either popular or smaller documentaries? Just curious. I think someone told me a scene in Romeo Must Die had something reminiscent of poi, but I could be wrong...

Not really movies, but here goes:I was watching the newer version of Dune, which I taped around Christmas 2000, when a Bacardi commercial caught my eye. It was like a mild rave/club. Then I saw someone doing glowstick Poi! Just a weave, nothing special, he had like 4 seconds of airtime, catching his sticks and drawing the Bacardi logo with them in the air, then continuing to spin while the scene faded out. Then I watched the first Bobby Flaw battle on Iron Chef ( a japanese cooking show popular in the US and Canada), and the club they were holding the show at in new York had an intro of sorts, and it had someone doing some cheap Poi in it. I think it was a simplified weave. There you go!

She was doing a baton GFM, which is similar but different, hard to explain since I have now done both smile I like how it played into the movie though! smileI know FireWorks Dance did some performing for the upcoming Anne Rice Movie "Queen of the Damned". The previews look sucky but I want to check it out to see them.Alot of the polynesian/indigenous movies have fire performers in the backdrop. Not necessarily poi but....------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...

My pops was telling me something about a scene in the original crocodile dundee that had something with swing and wood (as a end-weight) that made whistling noises or something. Might be another to add to the list! smile

Ahh the bull roarer! I thought I was the only one with any experience with this tool. I'm surprised you've never brought it up before Josh.the bull roarer is indeed unique and typically Australian in that it's fairly simple yet very practical. Indigenous Australians have been using the bull roarer (actually called a Watanobbi in the Yukulau dialect) for thousands of years both as a hunting device, cutting tool and as an integral element of a boy's transition to manhood. The bull roarer can be swung much like a staff (as can be seen at a corroboree), but the additional "dangly" bit (kinda like a poi) morphs the tool into both beautiful and dangerous. To wield a bull roarer takes much skill and although I spent 6 months in the outback using the tool to kull kangaroos and wallabies, I consider myself barely proficient.any other aussies familiar with the Watanobbi?

I only have experience using a Watanobbi from horseback...I used to use one everyday to ward off the Drop bears on my way to school...I never had any troble with them, I'm not sure if it was the bull roarer or the horse which scared them off more.Bush-tucker-Josh

Goys, FYI, the bull roarer as with the didgeridu, in some groups, is ver sacred, and should not be named under certain conditions, infront of women, only in ceremony, etc... I dont know too much about it, I just know that a fellow didge player once warned me.-PSM sXe------------------"One can only see what one observes, and one observes only things which are already in the mind."-Alphonse Bertillon

More proof of the increasing popularity and visibility of Poi and Staff twirling:A film that's just opened today in the UK is 'South West Nine' (SW9 is the postcode for Brixton, a London area) and is apparently about 24 hours in the life of a few Brixton people. From the look of the clips I've seen on TV they eventually all end up at a rave, and slap bang in the middle of the crowd as they walk in to the rave, is a girl doing Poi!Also news clips from the premier show they had performers outside the theatre, including somebody doing fire staff.Cool! Espically as Brixton is where a bunch of us spin on Wednesdays!

To tell you this, I have to admit I watch crappy reality TV smileThe new series of Shipwrecked III in Australia has an Aussie fire dancer. They showed her playing with single and double staff as well as poi in the audition process - very cool.

I know the guy doing fire staff in the Toploader video... I will tell him he has received worldwide recognition for his actions grinIt's wierd that this is a community of fire twirlers, but not more of us say 'I'm going to be on telly, I'm going to be on telly!'.Maybe the _real_ fire twirlers don't check this site wink j/kI saw a guy doing poi in Madonna's new video (I can't remember the song).Apparently, there is an advert on Sky one with a girl doing poi on a beach (all I seem to get these days is 'oh, you do that spinny thing like the girl on the Sky one advert'). I haven't seen it though...Happy twirling,Princess xox

On the show "Farscape" the character Chiana was in a 'who can be sexier' competition with another girl and did some fire poi. Now, I am giving credit to the actress for doing them herself, no stunt double but...she used longish chains, really small fire, a basic crossover and camera effects to try to make it look cooler. I wasn't impressed. In the end credits to the movie "Josie and the Pussycats" there is someone doing fire poi, basic tehnique yet well done.Nomad, several bands are starting to step up and incorporate these fire arts into their stage show more than videos. Guar has the "Girly Freak Show" which travels with them and one of the girls does poi and fire breathing. Gene Simmons from Kiss does/did fire breathing over the crowd. Me personally, I would love to share a stage with Godsmack!

Yes, Ms. Spears does have a bit of staff (and one poi shot I think) in the background but not being a fan myself I had to mute the video in order to see it (and it wasn't that impressive). Also in a the new movie "Faust" - a B grade spawn ripoff - there is one scene that has fire breathers and what appears to be flaming chains (never get a good look at them though). The scene is only about 5 minutes long and all the fire is off in the back so don't rent this movie just for them.------------------'There is a fist pressing against anyone who thinks something compelling'

I saw that one Steel Wngs. I liked the book of "Mists of Avalon" better though. My friend taped the movie. I am going to have to go back and rewatch that part since to my memory they were twirling around with bits of flames and not twirling the flames. *shrug*>>toddling off to the vcr<<

I was informed yesterday by my mother that there was a poi person highlighted on one of those "When things Go Bad" shows (You know, like When Animals Attack, When Insects Swarm, Etc....This one was something like When Hobbies Go Bad or whatever).I guess his safety dumped his fuel dump, which of course flowed straight for the performer. The fuel lit (anyone else think it was white gas? I spent awhile convincing my mom of it), which of course then lit the performer, who then extremely stupidly began to run around so that when the safety caught him it was too hard to put him out. The guy sustained some really bad burns I guess. It was a lesson in everything not to do according to my mom. Well, you guys asked for poi/fire in the media...not necessarily the good examples! tongue------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com
