Posted: Hey guys, I've recently released a new website for my fire spinning, in the hopes that it will generate some more bookings for me. I've discovered at great cost people are terribly fickle and take my card saying they will call to book me but then never do, I'm hoping the site will give people another avenue with which to contact me. I'd love you guys to give me an opinion on it. I'm aware there are a few spelling mistakes, they are beng weeded out as we speak. anyways
Posted: is loading forever right now... clicking "refresh" - yay, there we go.
So I'll do a short review: first of all - great that you've been doing a website, good on ya. People really want to call - but in that moment they say it, they are standing right in front of you - so there is no need and the half-life of ideas is quite short...
wow - learning something new every day. So far never heard of Poi originating as percussion instruments. okay.
great introduction, name and location on the first page. there will be more events coming up over time, that's for sure. Galleries: sorry to say, but 7:34 is not "a short vid" is got pillarboxed (guess it's due to the aspect ratio) and shows you, head down, mostly spinning the weave... your demo-vid is the most crucial part of your attempt to get customers calling, so I would recommend: 1) a 3 minutes of material where you spin a variety of moves and toys 2) a 2 minute vid on each toy, all showing you head up and occasionally smiling into the camera (does not necessarily require a person operating the camera). The less effects actually the better, slow motion definitely possible, short intro of maybe 10 seconds before the action... 5 seconds title and credits raise the impression of professionalism.
Today people are not just booking a firespinner - there is a lot of competition out there. They are booking the personality behind the spinning. They like to be entertained and positively motivated - depending on the venue
Great - a contact form. Very very nice! Yet, consider having your cellphone number on display - if you want. Some people/ organizers do last minute bookings because their performers don't show up or cancel the gig on short notice, they would want to call you and not get caught in a loop of sending mail, waiting for reply and quote, only then getting your phone number or depending on you calling them.
Great disclaimer! Rarely seen, but all true.
Good luck - I hope my review is encouraging, because I do like your site.
Posted: as for the Google rating, I would suggest more links to famous and relevant websites, forums and shops for equipment. try getting people linking back to your site.
thumbs up

Posted: Cheers! I'm currently working on a new video, that last was really just an experiment with the editing it will be replaced Thanks for all your other comments tho, they will be noted for sure. Although I am currently not listing a contact telephone number until I can sort out some form of seperate line, I'm not keen on leaving my personal number laying around on the internet, seems like just asking for trouble really.
Anyway, thanks again for your advice.
I'm trying to remember where it was I read about poi being used as percussion. Pretty sure it was in a history section of a poi book I have somewhere. I will double check the sources.

Posted: I think it's fantastic that it isn't over done! Sometimes you end up on websites that have a billion frames and the creators went Adobe crazy! Keep it as simple as it is now
I think FT covered the basics.
Aside from maybe reviewing the accuracy of the info under 'About the Art', the only thing I would suggest is different photos in your gallery. I can't tell what I am looking at in some of them, maybe ask your photographer to get a wider angle so that all of the poi is in the shot.
I also think it's very brave of you to even put your website up on HoP for critic by people that live, breath and eat this art form.
Great job BB

As for the photographer, first find a photographer who knows what the hell they are doing. I think it's important to find a photographer who spins as well, so that they know what they're taking photos of, where patterns are and so forth... Sadly I know no such photographer so anything that is any good is more by luck than anything. For example, the ones that are on a beach, there were about 200 pictures in that set, only about 5 of them were reasonable.
One day, one day i shall find my perfect photographer.... and then I shall keep them in a box in my car

Posted: Initial reaction - I'd say you need a higher resolution font. It looks blocky on my screen. I'll have a better look and report back later.

Posted: Did you code it yourself? Stay away from divs. They go a bit screwy on some browsers (I hate Internet Explorer). On my work computer the headings are overlapping the paragraphs. Looks ok on my home computer though.

Posted: Yeah I coded it all myself, personally I love Divs, and yours is the first report of them not loading right :S Will have a look into it. What Browser and resolution were you using?
If I could I would add a script to it that when its opened in Internet Explorer a giant fist flys outta the screen and punches the user in the jaw before deleting IE and replacing it with Chrome or Firefox....
the computer will then urinate on the unconcious user and leave a note appologising and explaining why this action was necessary...
Posted: Well DOne sir. FT Has it covered. Very good though.

No roll overs No Hover comands Limited use of CSS wtf? Firefox and Chrome all the way. will have a play with the site over the coming few days at your resolution, see if i can adjust stuff to fit! Cheers for the input
