Hello Everybody! My name is Derwyn and I am 22 years old and I am female. My birthday is July 25 1986. I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico and spend most of my time on Earth.

Favorite Color: Purple and Blue

Hobbies other than the obvious: Being out in nature, reading all the time, dancing, learning my harp, singing and most recently working my booty off learning the art of poi. I'm new to it and I suck but I'm in love!

Education: I am in school to become a nurse so I can travel the world and help others.

Favorite Book(s): Well... all time favorites are The Belgariad by David Eddings and The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan may he rest in peace. Recently I have enjoyed Conversations with God, Twilight and The Elenium.

Godzilla vs. a Star Wars Star Destroyer. Who wins? Why? Star Wars Destroyer. Reason... Destroyer

Plans for life in general: (i.e. what you want to do when you grow up) Heal and love. Change the World, Save the World! Have a family and travel.

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella?* Though I don't quite understand it I'll have to go with Vegemite because my mommy is from Australia and loves it.

Extra: I'm new to poi and I WILL become good at it. I love tattoos though at the moment I only have two... that will change. I am happy to meet you all and look forward to learning and making friends.

Welcome. smile

Yay! New poister. And you like vegemite (even though Marmite is King...)

And an Eddings fan. grin

So where do you spend your time when not on Earth?

I just started reading The Elder Gods by Eddings and I've read The Redemption of Althalus.

Robert Jordan was next up on my list.

Welcome to the boards.

Thank you!

When not on Earth I enjoy the views in the world of dreams. There is such a thing as being too grounded I think. I like to knock the human right out of me sometimes.

Im happy to be welcomed first by good fantasy readers. I love David Eddings and Robert Jordan. The next books on my list to read is The Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind. My brother has been on me about if for a while. You guys read it?

I am SUCH a newbie poister. I'm an absolute disaster! lol! All I have is homemade right now. "sigh" practice makes perfect I suppose.

I've been at it for I dunno... a year and a half now... and I'm using home made poi. (for practice anyway, my LEDs and fire poi arent home made)

Read any of the Raymond E. Feist stuff? All thats pretty good, I feel, but you've got to start with Magician. smile ALL 24 of the books relate to one another in some way.

Wow! 24 books! I'm not a stranger to a long series but crazy. I'll have to check them out or more like add it to the list of the tons of books I need to read.

How are you doing at a year and a half? Your own honest opinion. All I know is that I am determined to be amazing one day, I've wanted to learn for a few years now and then I finally got up and made a sock poi. My brother is going to make me one tomorrow with a chain and tennis balls. You think that would work okay? I think it would be better then what I have now, I have a blister on my hand because of the shoe string. smile

I think balloons full of rice in socks works best, I use about 2/3 to 3/4 of a cup of rice in each balloon.

Tennis balls are in my opinion too light. Tennis balls with something in them could be perfect, but not as face-friendly.

My own opinion? Who knows? I play on my own mostly so i've got no real comparisons. Amazing, I suppose so, I've amazed a few people with poi but non-poisters are quite easy to amaze, aren't they? tongue2 Amazing by the standards of the people on this board, I think not, so its really relative.

I've also been praised by a few beginners. But none of that means much to me. I do it because I enjoy it. I'm at a stage now where not a whole lot is held back from me, but there are still a whole truckload of puzzles and other challenges there to nut out.

Thank you! I'm glad to be here!

Yes, I have a 19 string harp so it's rather small but still not too small. I'm still not very good but it takes work and dedication just like poi.

My arm hurts so bad right now from practing all morning. Now I know why there is a whole thread about how poi hurts and all the ways it does. lol!

Go to harpsonly.com, it has some nice harps for good prices.

Hmm....

I also found switching to heavier poi a benefit. Although I would suggest you get some muscle training with something lighter first.

I have also been complimented and told I am good. Which is amusing, since I do not think of myself as such.

Terry Goodkind was ok. Interesting ideas, but I got a bit bored with it. Not really sure why.

Ya? I'll still have to read it and I'll let you know what I thought.

I just made a sock poi with tennis balls and they feel pretty nice. I am feeling it in my arms but I like it, I'm getting stronger. hehe! I'm a small person so maybe the tennis ball weight is good, it hurts when I hit myself in the face though. grin I tried to poi light and didn't like it so I agree with you.

Thats one of the best things about poi. When I started doing it I already had a lot of friends that were really good, so they were just trying to encourage me and teach me things, however my other group of friends, they had no idea what I was up to, and now they all have their own pair of practice poi! It's wonderful.

Had another 3 burns out in the yard yesterday because it got sort of warm....tried to bust out the video camera Derwyn so I could show ya the finger wrap and whatever else but I couldn't seem to find it...still working on that hopefully should have it found by today.

I do not seem to have friends interested in trying it more than a couple times. I need to get someone I see often just as hooked as I am....
Although I might have gotten a grade 9 boy into it when I was supervising his class today.... We can hope.
And the hitting of self never goes away until you stop trying new things. Which is bad. New things are shiny and are to be embraced....
grin
.changes subject. Have you read any Terry Pratchett? His early Discworld stuff is sort of fantasy. Hmmm.... Sir Terry Pratchett it is now....

I love it when I hit myself, it cracks me up! Unless it's my nose or ears.

I have not read that, my daddy and brother have though. For years I read non-fiction and non fantasy fiction, aside from Davis Eddings and so I'm catching up to them now. What do you mean sort of fantasy?

I am also a fan of Lewis Carroll. wink
