Searching is the way - search for "Avatar"
Quick answer, you need a certain amount of posts (101 I believe), then you can change things like where it says "Newbie" and add an avatar

Posted: Go to the "My Home" link at the top of the forum page - next to "log out"
At the very bottom of the next page there should be three little headings: 1. "Personal information, email, password, etc." 2. "Display preferences, number of shown threads, languages, colors..." 3. "Subscribe / Unsubscribe from receiving forum posts by email, change message notifications, etc."
Click the "edit" link next to "Personal information, email, password, etc."
Enter your password in the top box to allow yourself to make changes to your settings. Then scroll down to the very bottom: you should see the avatar settings. Tick the box next to "Upload your avatar (80x80 max pixels, may be smaller) (.gif, .jpg, .png accepted" and then press browse to find a picture saved on your computer. Or Tick the box below that one ("URL to your avatar (80x80 max pixels, may be smaller. .gif, .jpg, .png accepted. Please limit size to a maximum 10Kb.") and write in the URL of the picture you want to use. Or Tick the box below that which says: "Use a stock avatar" then click the "change" link and select one of HoP's avatars. (Useful if you can’t get the other two to work.)
To change your title, you need to do as Durbs said and get 101 posts.
Avatars can be no larger than 80X80 pixels I believe.
But I'm a newb here myself.
