Alright, tonight is election night again in Canada. I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet.
It's going to be interesting, very tight I think, between the Liberals and the Conservatives. Most pepole I talk to are sick of the Liberal's BS, and especially of Martin, but fear what Canada would be like under rule of the Conservatives and Harper. Maybe this is the time for NDP to shine? Not likely, Canada isn't that socialist. But a lot of people don't know where to turn this election.
Things seem to be stirring up in Quebec as well, especially with Duceppe stating (finally, some maight say) that Quebec is a nation within Canada itself. I'm personally hoping the sepratist movement doesn't gain too much popularity....
That's the basics in a nutshell... I hope the conservatives don't win!! Harper looks too much like a Sith Lord from Star Wars, honestly... If only I were old enough to vote >.<'

A few more hours and we'll know what the next govt. here will be. What the future holds?...well that will be the more interesting part.

Minority conservative government.

I just hope they don't undo things that people worked really hard on, and that they don't do stupid things, such as the same sex marriage bill, and agreeing to the missiles thing with the US.

Possibly more amazing is that I've never heard of that party before lastnight...

that sounds very similar to Australian politics. The Liberals have been in power since '96 and a large amount of people are sick of their bulls**t, however Labour provide very little difference in policies and have will probably have a weaker candidate in the next election. The Greens are the third option, but like canada, we aren't that socialist i dont think.

My best guesses came true on this one, anyway.
Liberals couldn't win because of Gomery, and the Bloc and NDP will never win, but no one likes the Conservatives QUITE enough to give them a majority.
I think that we'll be back to a Liberal government before long. Until then, I may just hide somewhere and try to sabotage Stephen Harper...

Actually, the only reason that the conservatives got in, is because they were the lesser evil. The Americans could have voted for the lesser evil too, but they didn't.
Also, you need to look at where the votes are coming from. The majority of the votes are coming from middle aged, and even more, seinors who are voting. Seniors who voted for Liberals previously, but are now voting conservative, because they are just as sick of them as everyone else. For them, NDP is too socialist, and well, Bloc is french and seperatist, so... Where else are they to turn? As bad as the resut of this election sounds, it's the best thing we could have hoped for... A Conservative minority - Gives time for the Liberals to clean themselves out and get their arses back into gear, but doesn't give too much power to Harper. Hopefully with less scandals than before...
Most people are saying that there's going to be another election in a year or so. Hopefully not long enough for Harper to start frigging with things. And who knows, maybe by then I'll be old enough to vote

So it would be a hellofa lot of work for them to get rid of that, so I'm pretty sure that's safe for a while.
And on that note, someone is trying to up the voting age from 18 to 25!! *dies* I know at least a dozen people at my school who are killing themselves to finally be able to vote, including myself. That just makes no sense, I mean, it won't help to get any interest into the youth regarding politics if they have to wait 10 years to vote! I can't wait until next year!!

Just out of interest, could someone briefly summarise what it is about the liberals that Canadians are sick of?
I was under the impression that Canada was basically doing pretty well in all the things that matter, and that it was kind of like a mature and less-paranoid version of America? Isn't that partly down to the (liberal) government?

The liberals have done a shitty job with their budget estimates, making all kinds of cuts to programs, and refusing to fund things the people say they want, and the liberals promised to do, and then, at the end of the year they run huge budget surplusses, which they then use like a little goodie bag to distribute funds to the people they like instead of the programs promised. In addition to that, huge amounts of money have gone astray in scandalous fashoin... And the liberals dont even seem to take much responsibility for any of it.
Lots of broken promises. Little concern shown over it.
No long term vision for Canadians. ( well, not from any party really)
My personal peve is that they said they would end child poverty in Canada by the year 2004, swore a promise in parliment, and despite all the budget surpluses, have not come any where near doing so, child poverty has increased. They have not even put a plan in place, never mind accomplishing it!
Okay, out to slurp drinks from coconuts with a cute Finnish boy....
