Brighton has an art course, but the art campus is based in Hastings - so I'm buggering that for a laugh

Bath Spa has 2 campus's, since its art your looking for? then youll be Sion Hill, I think the accomodation is right next to the royal crescent!

Bath is the most amazing city!

It's really hard to get onto if you don't come from Brighton college or a fairly prestigious, well-known school apparenlty... 3 people I know applied to do it, none of them got on. One of them's now at Goldsmiths, so...

I'll scond secondsam about bath being an amazing city. It really is, can't say what baths spa's like cos I'm actually at the other uni in the city, but if you're looking for a nice city then bath's the place.

UCL in London is meant to have quite a good art department... but London is mucho expensive, even more so these days since they put the transport fares up!

The best art schools I would have said are in London. Though Falmouth would be my first choice, because of the lifestyle I'd have. Come down and visit Falmouth.

I've been prospectus shopping

Check post yesterday morning and there were lots and lots of books for me to look at

Went on the ucas website, typed in ceramics/glass and oderd pretty much ever prospectus available.

I'm finding it very hard not to judge a book by its cover though...
Some prospectuses are lovely looking, with loads of information in, pages nicely set out and in a format that I can read, where as others are plain, with tiny little writing and no detailed information about finance or accomodation.

So..the list are.....!

Plymouth - Ceramics, Glass, Metals.

Sunderland - Glass, Architectural Glass and Ceramics

Buckinghamshire - Ceramics with Glass

Nottingham - Decorative Arts

Staffordshire - Ceramic Design

Bath Spa - Ceramic Design

Wolverhampton - 3D Contemporary Applied Arts OR Ceramics OR Glass.


This is so hard!
I think I like the idea of courses with more than one or no specialist materials..although ceramics is my favourite, I like to play around with lots of differant things.

Nottingham looks amazing, as does Wolverhampton, and Sunderland and not forgetting the oh so elitest Bucks...

Its the north run after christmas. College funded coach trip oop north to look at the universities up there with madatory piss up in the hotel rooms.

Aimee, my friend studied Biology at Wolverhampton and will testify that it was the worse 3 years of her life. Miserable place full of miserable people. However, a friend that studied at Nottingham loved it (ask Duballstar as well)

I would recommend a trip to every place you consider and hang out to get a feel for the place...

No matter how good or enjoyable the course is, if the place is scarey it will never be right.

Aimee! I'm going through exactly the same process, and its horrible (Just narrowed down to my final 6, althouhg im off to edinburgh tomorrow to have a look at the university.) My 6 that im applying to are:-

Exeter(Cornwall Campus)-Renewable Energy

Leeds-Energy & Enviromental Engineering

Edinburgh-Enviromental Engineering

Lancaster-Enviromental Engineering

+.....(other 2 but im not sure about)...
Southampton-Envirmoental Engineering
Nottingham
Cardiff..

Im not sure about things aswell. But if u go to falmouth and i go to exeter, then we are like 10 minutes away
IM findin it sooo hard aswell. Hope your personal statement is coming along as mine is awful.

Havn't started personal statemant yet.

Around 30% of my class have dyslexia, and the rest of us..well havn't written anything essay like since GCSE's.
So to say we're a bit out of practice is an understatemant.

I reckon our personal tutor has got a hrd task in front of her trying to get us to write anything

Most unis should have a good policy on supporting students with dyslexia, I'm at Preston (University of Central Lancashire)- and they've been fab throughout my undergrad and into post grad. I got extra time in my exams and memory mapping software to help me learn and see my subjects. All the uni's should also have policies on preventing discrimination and widening participation - so if you say that you are or suspect you are dislexic then they should be lenient in reading your statement.

aimee, go nottingham! obviously its better for you to go have a gander to see if you like it but id recomend it, i also know some peeps there who love it

Alot changes in a year and a half...


This morning I got an interview date for my first choice - which was Westminster.
This was all very nice and I was happy until I read the date - 28th March.

Five days to organise a 25 page A1 portfolio and to practise not stammering when I'm nervous

Good luck, dont forget that everyone is in the same boat as you so the interviewers will have had a lot of nervous stammering before and after you!

Your portfolio is the main thing, but as with any interview there are some little hints and tricks -

* Look the part, for an arty course you dont have to be wearing a suit, but certainly look smart, hard working and dedicated while still being 'arty'

* Be distinctive, you dont have to have neon pink hair, but a quirky pair of earings or a red portfolio folder where everyone elses is black (simply means you'll be more strongly associated in their minds and they'll assume this is because you were so much better)

* Be polite, respectful and a bit of flattery, but not sycophantic. Rememeber to shake hands, use their names when appropriate, look at the interviewer(s) make eye contact but dont stare, and have good body language - practice in front of the mirror.

* when you answer questions, speak clearly and use semi formal language - certainly not slang or an overly familiar tone, perhaps a little humour if it is appropriate and always use examples and put a positive and 'look what ive learnt' spin on things - say they asked you 'how well do you think you cope under pressure with assignments?' (i remember being asked that) dont just say 'i think i do alright' expand a little, 'in my last round of assessments i had two important pieces due in the same week, and although it was a lot of work it meant i developed a lot of self control keeping working even though i would have liked to relax as well as planning my time and in the end i produced two pieces of work i was very pleased with, and a well end break!' (nice big smile)

* See if you can find out a bit of insider infomation - a famous name who is associated with the course/institution, a relevant club/society in the uni/SU so you can say something like 'I am very much looking forward to working with ......(insert name of lecturer who happens to have published a book that you (theoretically) read) ..... and i like the idea of the student mentoring scheme and would be very pleased to be involved in my second year' If you make it seem like you know a bit about the place, are making plans for integrating etc you come across better and you seem like a safer bet than the person who goes 'i dunno' when asked why they want to come to this particular place - just like job interviews!

* Smile, and relax - you'll do better and give off better vibes! A little trick for if you get nervous and scatty and need to chill and focus, imagine yourself standing quite still and now imagine another you stepping backwards out of yourself and then standing there behind you resting their (your?) hands on your (the one in fronts) shoulders, imaging the feeling of these imaginary hands on your shoulders and concentrate on it, when you are ready just step forward away from the other you and off you go, chilled and centred! i dont know if this will work for you but it does wonders for me and a few people ive recommended it too.

Most importantly dont worry about getting in or not - its a good experience. And dont worry too much about whether or not you have made the right choice about your course and/or institution it is suprisingly easy to change them, i have changed course at the same institution and then changed years later to the same course at a different place and both are less bother than the initial application.

Dont forget, if you are at uni in london that you should come to spitz!

The last five days have been absoloutly manic getting the portfolio together, but its all together now and looking pretty swish.

My parents are being arseholes and are to wrapped up in their own little worlds to help to get me there - dad says "Why cant your mother swop her shifts around, my job is too important to miss a day", mum says "Why cant your father miss just one day - I've got meetings to go to!" :rolleyes:

So tomorrow my little sister will have the flu, and will miss school to help me carry everything up to london on the train.

I have a pretty green skirt to wear, with earrings and necklace to match and a smart black top with some dolly shoes coverd in black sequins. Posh hippy
