Does anyone know how, when searching the net for information, I can exclude companies selling stuff from the search results; or, is there a (free) search engine that has this feature?

While I've got no problem with companies selling stuff, obviously, when searching for info I'd prefer not to get them turning up in my search results.

I don't see why this shouldn't be possible, for example, most stuff from sites ending with 'co.uk' are likely to be selling stuff, so a search engine that can recognise things like that should be able to filter the results.

Posted:Using google you have a few options:

you can use '-' to exclude something so:

poi -fire

would bring all the sites with the word poi and not fire

You can also use it before 'inurl' so:

poi -fire -inurl:co.uk

will bring up the same as before without and co.uk domains.

you can also use | as a either/or statment so

poi|staff -fire -inurl:co.uk

would pull up pages with either poi or staff without fire and no .co.uk domains.

Note the last of spaces etc after the | - and inurl: You can also use + to include and quotation marks to search for an exact string.

Hope this helps biggrin

A firefox plugin that allows you to exclude sites from your searches, among many other useful things. Obviously it can't just exclude commercial sites but it may help a bit.

Gets rid of a few sites you may want, but gets rid of nearly all the commercial sites too.
