hey,

I've a question for you...I've made my first movie with my sisters photo camera..but..it is a .MOV (Quicktime) movie..

it isnt a very long movie, around 1:30.. but it is 18 MB..a problem for my 5 MB account...

I can convert it to .avi...then it is bigger..but I can build on it..with a program like movie maker..only much better..

but how can I make it much smaller after that...because I have seen much movies.longer then mine and much smaller...

and the second question ubbangel; how can I make a link for my video on my gallery?

hope you can help me smile

1. [Old link] is a possibility although i'd be happy to hear lots of other suggetions cos i like avoiding using non standard codecs (i however am incapable of using mpeg compression without killing my videos).

2. just upload it the same way you do still images smile

i would advise not using pinacle, you can not import to any other editor if you capture or edit with pinacle... it may look good to use but it is far from it. wink

your better off using movie maker! then running divx on your file.

look for a program called 'Dr. DivX'. It's very handy for making video smaller

I hear that DivX comes bundled with spy/adware (can anyone confirm/deny this as I'm not totally sure?)

Also, when I was putting vids online, the ones encoded with DivX were by far the ones most people had problems viewing- I wouldn't use it again.

what do you use instead of divx dave and how well does it handle juggling/firespinning footage?

i think mpeg is pretty much the closest thing to a standard but using it, i either end up with ~80meg files on a small resolution or it completely kills the good bits (i.e. the things that are moving get horrible artifacts and become unwatchable).

when you install divx codecs you have to un-tick a few boxes otherwise you get the adware (if memory serves)

Real player has a lot of spyware in it, to the point where every time my laptop was connected to the internet spybot blocked real networks about once every 15 minutes. I took out the spyware and real wouldn't let me watch movies any more. Don't use it.

i agree dave, divx codecs are a pain. mov's are okay cos they work on mac and pc but i way prefer flash cos it allows total control.

The most important thing with compressing fire movies is not to use 'interlacing'. That's where it stores alternate lines for each frame and then kinda overlays them. Saves a lot of file size but looks dreadful on fast moving flames.

Pixel size is the best way to compress video, there's really no need for using 640 x 480, 320 x 240 is a tad small so i sometimes use somewhere inbetween.

It's a while since I did any. I used someone elses system with moviemaker installed and found that I could get decent quality/small file size with WMV's.

Just done a bit of searching and found that DivX did come with ad/spyware at one point; possibly they've seen the error of their ways and taken it off now.

I agree, Realplayer etc are trash; they're notorious for their dodgy practices.

It's a shame that there's so many movies put up on the net as ram files from before the time when it was known just how dodgy Real are.

As I understand it Realplayer was originally offered as a free movie player, then all kinds of ad/spy/hijack-ware were added, then Real made it impossible to downlaod the player without giving credit card details.

That's why I'm suspicious of DivX for also slipping in spyware, even if they have now stopped it.

I'm sorry, but microsoft actually makes it very easy in this case.

WMV encoding from say, encoding AVI in premiere from your source tape and then transfering into WMM and editting, comes out very well. Good encoding and small file size, easy to view. 320 by 240 pixels are perfectly fine, the important thing is how much information/second, try to keep it above 300 kb/s, about 500ish. Make sure your framerate is above 29.97 also.

Best of luck.

My videos which are 5 minutes always turn out below 10 megs - and seems people have no issues viewing them.

To do: More Firedrums 08 video?

Wildfire/US East coast fire footage

LA/EDC glow/fire footage

Fresno fire
