Thought the UK spinners should know about this; it's a documentary on 'free-running' on channel four at 10 pm, titled 'Jump Britain'.

Looks excellent from the trailers I've seen.

There was a thread on the unicyclist.com forums where people where saying pretty much the same thing- that unicycling had greatly helped during periods of depression.

From personal experience I can say that spinning/unicycling/juggling and other skills, have kept me going during previous dark times; they seem to somehow stay real when the other things in life lose their meaning.

I think a lot of spinners would agree.

Yep. No matter what else is going on with your life, the laws of physics are pretty hard to argue with, so you know that if you throw a ball/spin a poi/ride a unicycle a certain way, the same thing is going to happen every time.
That offers a reliability that's very handy to grab onto when you need it.

Plus, having something that you can make purely yours gives you something to think about and concentrate on to tune out everything else that's happening around you.

Both of them are pretty handy sometimes smile

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

as for the continuing mainstream poi debate, my gfriends middle aged next door neighbour got some for xmas so we went over to show them some. i thought it was wicked the enthusiasm they had for it, it's not just the kids that love playin with fire... biggrin

on the flipside, while i wasn't watching T4's hollyoaks auditions i didn't notice a girl doing a 3 bt weave as her interview. great way to score yourself an acting part love... ubblol

have you been to a festival recently? or most markets. poi is mainstream smile

What's most popular in mainstream poi, eg tailed, untailed, fire, unlit etc.

I've not been to any festivals for a while, other than a couple of Sheffield one-dayers where tailed poi seem to be the thing people like.

What's it like elsewhere?

Hmm I've seen far less fire in mainstream places.. it all seems to be about poitoy cobras around here, at least. And there were a hell of a lot of them at Glasto too. But maybe that's just me.

I hope fire doesn't go mainstream because people will take it less seriously and will probably end up getting hurt.

umm - i see a lot of people doing fire poi. Go to any coastal town on a decent calm night and there'll be someone playing. Maybe nit in winter, but there are poi at all the campsites and stuff along the south coast now all through the summer.

It's true that at most festies and stuff it's the pretty coloured poi with tails. All members of the family playing - (parents buy them for children and proceed to steal them wink ) I don't think it's a bad thing at all. It's the new yoyo - but those that get the most out of it will stick about and others will in time drift off to find something else.

But everyone knows what it is now. A few years ago it was all puzzled faces - now it's allsorts running up to you to show you that they can do 'this really cool thing' with your 'pois' !!

nobody else see this?

Oh, sure fire on the coast is common. But I wouldn't say it was mainstream. I know about 40 people who spin around here, and I'd guess about half of them have never even heard of fire poi, and only about 5 have actualld done fire. Which seems odd to me, but ho hum. So I'd say the non-fire variety is more mainstream.

I've almost never had someone come up to me doing poi knowing what it is. They ask if they can have a go and hit themselves. Ha.

Maybe I'm just hanging around with a different group of people. I'm not into dance music or that scene so maybe that's the reason.

there's loadsa people out there spinning fire but there's a lot less who are committed to it and turn up to meets regularily etc... it is a lot like yo-yo in that a lot of people can do the basics but when you see someone lookin badass you know dey they is the shiznit! on the other hand it's different cos some people who only have basic stuff can ooze style... smile

i always get people asking to use my poi in clubs but whether i give them or not depends on how in control they are. there's nothin more annoyin that someone ferociously twattin people round the head while trying to show you how well they can spin.... rolleyes

See, I don't know any PK people. I've never seen it going on in my town. And I wish it was, because I want to learn off someone.

I've noticed more availability of fire poi in shops.... in that there actually are some, but not really anyone spinning them. Having said that it could just be because i notice them, people in general may just not notice.

Most people i've seen actually playing with poi, they've been tails...

and back on the topic of free running (or er... walking).... i made a half arsed attempt the other day walking back from town, i was somewhat restricted by the particular clothing i was wearing but i became aware that not all urban environments are particularly suited to parkour... umm and it's really hard to get on the millenium stadium roof! biggrin
