dont think theres been a thread about this. rolleyes

i was having fun dropping my poi earlier.

you know when you throw your poi and sometimes you cant quite catch it? youve dropped it. all is not lost, what you do is simply incorporate the drop into your spinning. this is suprisingly (or not?) pretty easy to do. what i was doing, and there may be other ways, is just keep spinning.

so imagine you did catch the poi you dropped and continue doing weave motions (or what ever you would have been doing with it, if you had caught it). to pick up the poi, break into some long arm and bend down and scoop up your poi so its all nice and in sync. and it looks pretty smooth. or smoother than it would have done if youd have just dropped it and gone, froook eek. the fun thing about it is that you dont loose the flow when you drop a poi. cool

have fun smile ubbrollsmile

I've been playing about with dropping my poi onto my feet and flicking them back up. It's pretty neat. Not exactly new and exciting, though smile

yeah.

foot flicks, kick backs (if they are reachable) are cool.

for picking up i generally use a neck or leg through wrap, and scoop it up then. s'alright.

a great thing to learn, dropping.

Im getting there..... *sigh*

1. Make sure you are on a planet with gravity

2. Throw your poi in to the air

3. Leave for 10, 15 minutes (Note: May take as little as 2 seconds)

4. You successfully completed a drop!

remember at Brizzol when we were playing with those poi pick ups Oli?
Basically you can "whip pick up" so long as you aim the head of the poi near the head of the other and there's a little bit of space between the tailing end and the floor, it comes up in good rhthym and you can generally get a good 360 out of it before it starts to become untangled and fly away so you have plently of time to work it back in smoothly smile

one thing that is actually easier to do in juggling than it is to do with poi: drop.

i'm getting really good at drops - i'm up to dropping 8 all in quick succession smile

as a quick on-topic aside:

there is one drop i used to do on purpose - in wall plane do a high btb stop (i.e. hand behind shoulder, poi stalled down the line of your spine) with one arm.
drop the poi from this position and swing your arm out to the side, down and back down btb (waggling your open fingers all the way) to catch the poi by your bum.
has a nice little effect of a temporarily disappearing poi as when your hand swings round after the stop, it is magically empty smile

Not necesarily. When I read 'drops' I actually thought people were bouncing poi, which can obviously be done.

Or you could just drop and leave it there. And pull another poi from somewhere else. Or turn a double weighted poi into a meteor.

Well, shall we go?

ah, well.

without being a mod or having a member number below 1000 we are forever consigned to the hop backbenches, only to be called upon to shout 'hear, hear' and occasionally to express our own wacky opinions so we can be properly and regularly berated and chastised by the old skool hoppers.

woe is us.

You mean this thread isn't going to go into a huge debate on whether to call them drops or pickups, ranging first over what people think they should be called, then technical definitions, then philosohpy of definitions, then nitpicking over the definitions, then defining the words used in the definations, then partially forgetting about the whole previous discussion and debating on moral issues what they should be called, then finding out what arashi calls them, which rev will disbute, while everybody else debates on semantic ground what they should be called. Then glass defines them in a zen fashion, which everybody disagrees with, so he defines them each in a mechanical fashion which everybody agrees with. Then NYC starts up the argument again with a post containing sensible moderate views, which starts the entire argument up again, then a mod comes on and locks the thread, just as bluecat and poipoipoi was about to post. So they go away and play with hats and devilsticks respectively instead?

I'm really dissapointed now. frown

since new moves are so few and far between in the staff forum, and I have no time to practise, I guess arguments and heated discussions are the most fun part of HOP. I really have to start writing that book...
