I was writing in my Livejournal the other day, and it got me thinking about something that I think a lot of you guys share with me.

I'm sure every one of us have taken hits from our instrument of choice. Most of us have probably drawn blood, gotten burnt, at at least lit ourselves on fire at least a little bit. I took one the other day from my tubecores (unlit) that left a 1" gouge right at the hairline on my forehead. For some reason I suddenly discovered that I'd never tried a 4bt ttn above my head before, and since my fire chains were the ones in my hands I wisely decided to try it with them first. Needless to say that didn't work out so well, at least not the first try.

I guess that brings me to my point. After I finished cursing under my breath, and showing my new battle scar to my sister who promtly decided I was a good victim for her to test her nursings skills on, I checked it in the mirror. My conclusion? it was a good hit, but all that really did was make me more determined to pull it off. Which I did later that night.

There are always those looks you get from the "normal" people who think you're insane for picking up your chains again after you take a good shot. Or insane for picking up your chains in general. Especially us guys who sometimes have to pick ourselves up off the ground from the fetal position and dust ourselves off. Some people laugh when they hear you got your wounds from hitting yourself, others think you're crazy. I take it as a mark of pride and a show of my determination. Obviously it's not a mark of skill, but theres that element of danger in this stuff that gets us all addicted. That woosh from the fire as it goes by your head for the first time is addictive. It's hypnotizing.

I've had that 'embrace the pain' mentality for most of my life, and by no means does it stop with spinning. I've done Search and Rescue work for years, I used to come home from searches with my arms and legs covered in cuts and scratches from crawling through blackberries or devils club all day. I've been called into the counselor back in high school from it because they thought I was cutting when I came back with my arms looking like I'd spent the weekend with a knife carving away. But to me its part of the game. Same as the blood and the burns from the spinning. Theres no satisfaction from something that anyone can do or comes easily and free. Most people are scared of what we do and rightly so. If you think about it it really is quite insane to attach fireballs on the ends of chains and spin it around yourself. But we do it anyways, and I'm not about to stop because of a little pain. Most of my close friends have the same mentality as me, and of course we laugh about it but we agree that scars make better stories than tattoos... And do we have some stories wink

The pain snaps you back to reality. Lets you know you're alive, you're not perfect, and yes you can hurt yourself doing what we do. That doesn't scare me off though and it just pushes me to make myself better so next time it doesn't hurt so much. I've been trying to decide if that makes me crazy, or self destructive or what. But I have the feeling most of you guys know follow a similar train of thought. This just wouldn't be possible otherwise.

Anyways, just curious what your thinking is...

I think you more or less summed it up Lurch. . . and I just tried writing a post. . .however it more or less said exactly what you did.

So. I'll just say you said it for me wink

Heck I don't even notice the little burns (though people always point them out! lol) anymore, they are just annoyances that I pick up from time to time. . .

Pains all in your head wink And tells you you haven't practiced enough! :P

sometimes i worry that pain is the only thing that can make you realize whats real

id say that spinners see pain as inspiration, or a teaching aid of sorts, its a reminder that you can always improve, i guess thats what you said, but id also say that spiners take that philosophy into ther life as a whole

I never bought this "chicks dig scars" bravado that some fire spinners flaunt.

I've never seriously hurt myself spinning. I try not to. And take great precautions to prevent scarring or serious injury. I spin with either cathedral wicks or sock poi, both very soft.

The only time I've seriously dinged myself was with 'beaming poi' ... and that was back before the warnings. frown

I see no reason to play with something that could be easily made less dangerous.

Except for fire... cuz that's just cool. cool

I have found that when you do something out of the ordinary and you sort of have to be a particular person to do it, it is very hard to describe the emotion that comes with what you do and the reasons why you do it to other people that have only seen it once or never seem it or do not do something like that themselves. Sometimes those people never understand...

The cuts, blood and bruises are just a part of it and a part of the pleasure that we take from it, that's not masochistic it's just the way it is.

I said to a girl one day, who said to her friend (only half in jest) that I was part of a fire cult, that women do that sort of thing all the time (not being sexest but as a girl relating to a girl I needed a girl thing) they give birth to their children that they feel passionatly about and love, they CHOOSE to go through the pain of it (most repeatedly)

Now that I write that example it seems that I cannot explain it properly but it made sense at the time and most importantly she understood.

So yes I understand what you mean.... smile

Well. . . I've never intentionally hurt my self doing Staff or Poi. However that said, Pain learns you the best--if it hurts you're gonna try very hard not to do it. I've got a few scars from practicing with metal staves, nice gashes in the legs and biceps that're healed. And the few burns I've got never scarred--nor do I want them too, however having said that just last time I was spinning we had a large group of people watching and I came up and talked to them later, and they pointed out a fairly large burn (bought 3" by .5") that my staff gave me when I got a bit close with it. I thought the sting was just from the lost hair. . .lol. But the entire group acted as though they'd never touch a fire toy in their life having seen that minor burn (was healed in 2 days).

A lot of people I find aren't willing to do something that causes them pain, but I do find it's a good motivational thing. My poi *always* get me. Spent 2 weeks learning BTB Weave (yea yea, I know I'm a slow learner :P) and went from constantly beaming myself in the face with my practice poi down to hitting my chest, and now I only wack the back of my calves. . over and over and over again. . lol.

Pain tells you your doing something you shouldn't be! And in the case of Poi and the like. . . that just means you have to fix the way you're doing your move! haha.

that's so true

that's why I made my own beginners poi out of this really think chain.....

and put a ball of chain on either end...

that way, when I do hit myself, I know I'm not going to do THAT mistake again

I strive to avoid pain and injury.

I don't really go along with the 'pain is the best teacher' idea, because it can be injurous and IMO there are better ways to learn the stuff, one of the best being to learn to spin so slow that, if you do get hit it's not going to hurt.

As I've got older, and continued to do potentially hazardous stuff like fire, spinning and extreme unicycling, I've come to focus on self preservation and respect for my body because, if I mess myself up it means I can't continue to do the stuff I love.

Noones doing this to hurt themselves on purpose (hopefully) and I would like to think that noone takes un-needed risks but I know thats sadly not true.

What I was talking about though mainly was the reaction to the pain after the fact. I don't *like* to get hurt. I don't do this to get hurt, but being hit is a risk thats always there and going to happen eventually no matter what.

Pain is just one of those things that happen in life, that happen to you everyday. I wouldn't say spinners are less affected by pain... Just that it comes as part of what we do sometimes. And different people react to pain differently... Some stop for a bit, until it goes away, others just spin on, and ignore it.

Although the "my scar is bigger than your scar!" is always a fun game smile

I once again wholeheartedly agree with Dave, as usual.

I got a degree in Chemistry without having to bash myself in the face once if I got a problem wrong. Why should poi be different?

People are not only taking unneeded risks but bragging about them. In this thread.

0 scars, 0 major injuries from firespinning. I guess that makes you guys cooler than me.

Well, shall we go?

I'm with NYC and Dave on this. I have also zero scars and zero major injuries. Yes, I've taken the "nad shot" just like everyone else...ONCE. Then I got a protective cup. I don't wear it anymore because I haven't smacked myself there in years.

I actually have an interesting relationship with pain because until [Old link] I lived every single day of my life in at least some pain. So I'm an expert at ignoring pain. I mean, everyone reacts to pain at the onset, but I can live with pain.

But I hate pain. I've had more pain in my life than any 27-year-old really ought to have experienced and, as far as I'm concerned, I'd just as soon experience other sensations.

ive never hurt myself seriously, and i dont spin fire (when i do, im going to be fantastic!! biggrin ) but when i hit myself i just laugh, or grunt with frustration and carry on.
when i horse ride tho, its the same approach, you either laugh, like when i fell into the sea, or grimace, and pick yourself up again. i havent found any of the minimal pain i suffer as any reward or insentive to carry on, just something to get over, and master the move im perfecting. guess we're all different

I set fire to my back once...I WAS wearing the wrong clothing so I suppose I asked for it. I'd met a guy off here and we'd been spinning together for about 2 wks. I had a mad crush on him and just couldn't decide what to wear, when he came and picked me up I'd still not decided...so I threw on the first(nylon eek!!) top I could see! How dumb was that?!! Anyway, I just learnt a new move and decided to get cocky and use his chains which were way heavier then mine. Whilst doing it the wick brushed my top and it went up.... censored..hahaha!! It was quite funny actually as I ended up rolling on the grass.
Anyway, I must have been doing something right as We've now been together for nearly 2 yrs!! ubbtickled

I would have to say it makes me crazy when I get burnt/hurt. It makes me insane that I can't get it right and makes me try even harder. As to the pain, well I just ignore that. I used to SI so I try not to go there. It's usually OK, but on some rare ocassions it's not good. I think that's one of the reason's I started spinning. I can put myself in the flame without putting the flame on me. See? Who needs therapy? Poi is the answer to everything!!

so, speaking of pain, I met these lovely things called beamers lastnight... Doing a btb fwd weave that went a little off, I got myself in the eye...

Check that Mo-fo out! (and no, that patch of blood in my eye ISN'T normal) Man that hurt... but was so funny! All my friends heard was a thump, and me saying "Lindsay going down! Lindsay going down!!" And laying down on the ground until I could see again. Then five min. spin off wihle that thing swelled... Man did it swell! Had to go buy a bottle of icewater to stop the swelling. The whole thing was hilarious!!

Went to work with a black eye this morning... ^^; Do the guys dig that? I mean if chicks dig scars and all...

Can I just state for the record - scars are not cool when you could have avoided them by being safer or knowing your limits

scars that come from stupidity are most certainly not cool

That is all in my humble opinion of course

*stifles a snicker-snort and tucks offending beamers behind her back* I can't say how sorry I am about that, Bobo...
(I certainly didn't expect to see _that_ picture when I wandered on into this thread...)

Anyway, back to topic (as I figure I should)...
I use beamers a lot, and hit myself with 'em -- not regularly -- but often enough to know that yes, they're very hard, and yes, they leave bruises. But when I'm going with them, and I whack myself in the shin, (for example), I just keep going. I guess it's just something I've grown used to.
Fire... not so much. I try my very best to do everything I can to not burn myself... Bruises are bruises, but burns... they're different.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

in the many minor knocks and such that ive had, including some serious ouchy knocks, i havent ever seriously injured myself. ive had a few bruises, and all of two minor burns, both from the hardware more than the wicks. and that was from doing an armwrappy butterfly thing with no shirt on. I just find that its really hard to burn yourself with poi, it just dont seem to happen, unless you get into a seriously nasty tangle or something. Or maybe thats just me.
