The dictionary definition of performance art is"
a nontraditional art form that consists of or features a performance by the artist .

seeing how fire dancing does fit into the definition of art that makes it a form of art.Which in turn qualifies it as performance art.

But I guess if you just copied all of your moves from someone else and didnt use any imagination.then yes you would just be a dancer
or a hack.

so are a you artist or hack ??

I have been cursed with the imagination to envision it all

Posted:I think a case could be made for spinning being a dance, but IMO it would weaken the definition of dance and not be particularly beneficail for spinners.

Spinning is it's own thing, it's unique and doesn't need to be categorised with dance or juggling etc to be a valid form.

I think a practical difference between spinning and dance is that with dance, music supplies the necessary structure/constraint; whereas with spinning it is supplied by the momentum/rythm of the poi/staff.

Having said that, many people have a style of spinning that is meaningfully described as 'dancing', and the term 'fire dancing' is well established.

If you don't dance a lot whilst spinning - no.

Posted:Riz, I attempt to be an artist. I don't know if I succeed.

Dance is not necessary to spin. Spin is not necessary to dance.
Both are very athletic, so can we not categorize them as athletic arts?

(just wanted to play devils advocate andbring up the old debate lol)

And as for it being a performance art, the key word there is perform. It is not always a performance art either.

It is what it is, and to each one of us that is different. I have seen spinners who do not dance. I have seen them who are not in the least bit artistic. I have seen who move and dance and flow to their own music in their head, and I have seen people power through moves so aggressively I thought they would ignite without fire. All have merit on their own and are intriguing when combined.

Posted:Surely just as there as many different spinning styles as there are spinners, ther are as many definaitions as well.

I know i dance when i spin (partly because i mostly do it to music), but i also know people who don't move at all or people who do gymnastic stuff like cartwheels. In my opinion it all depends on the spinner, the situation, the atmosphere, who else is there etc. etc.

It's a completely black-and-white issue, after all.
