Hullo. This is kinda odd, last forum I joined I knew most of the people on it, here I don't know anyone. Hopefully that won't last though! Anyway, here's me (sort of).

Name: Kat
Age:27, so theoretically old enough to know better, but it doesn't seem to be working!
Occupation: Teacher (blech! frown)
Location: Edinburgh
Hobbies: costuming, tapestry, sword fighting, lots of other stuff, and now staff spinning too!
First time spinning: Firestaff at about 3am in a field at the re-enactmant of the Battle of Bannockburn last September. Been hooked ever since, and my lovely fiance bought me a firestaff (and a balloon animal blowing kit!) for Christmas, isn't he nice?! Haven't lit it yet though, thought it might be good to stop hitting myself with it first.

Can't think of anything else right now, it's Monday morning and my brain has melted. Need more sleep.

Anyway, hello and hugs to all you nice people.

My kids seem nice so far.

Yay.

Funny, our classes were 5 minutes shorter today becuase it was the first day and I had to speed my lesson up by 5 minutes to get it all in. Nice to know my biolgical bell clock is so accurate even after a summer off. smile

Well, shall we go?

first years seem nice. second years pretty good (for the first time ever!). third year chem okay except for one (not bad considering lower ability/behaviour class). third year biology not very nice. both fourth years doing my head in and doing no work. fifth/sixth years nice kids.

Not going to be a good year methinks.

1st and 2nd year teaching Science, so a bit of everything, but we've got an okay course now.

3rd year biology = Intermediate 1 / Access Biology. (I'm teaching this because they had 4 classes timetabled in the same column, but only 3 biology teachers and I have a dual qualification in Chem & Biol)

3rd year Chemistry = Intermediate / Access 3 Chemistry.

4th year are both standard grade chemistry.

5th/6th year = Intermediate 2 Chemistry (most haven't done any chemistry before).

A fun timetable. Not. Thankfully we have fantastic and very helpful technicians.

You have technicians in school? What do they do?

Technicians prepare chemicals for us, and look after shared equipment. They also move equipment between labs when necessary, kinda similar to the role of technicians in Unis. They are amazing, and the science department wouldn't function without them! (they're also woefully underpaid and underappreciated)

Oh there's a bit of that too. Sometimes people forget to order stuff from the technicians and just take it. To their eternal annoyance. Personally I think it's better to stay on their good side - the technicians are all powerful and can make your experiments not work!

That was a good weekend - except for developing the lurgy and having to drive 400 miles on my own feeling awful.

Got to spin with the guy who first got me into staff, which was pretty cool.

Applied for job drawing maps last week, quite fancy that, have always liked maps.
Going home shortly to fill in more application forms. Unfortunately one of them is in Dundee, so would be less stressed but still not make it out to play. Oh well, is cool job at least, working as technician with Cancer Research team at Ninewells.
3 of them are in Edinburgh though. The £10,000 pay cut will be worth it, and I'll have time to work on a second degree (OU)

Job interview tomorrow at 4pm. In Dundee. For VERY cool sounding job. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!

On the plus side, the bloke phoned me on Sunday, so they must not think I'm useless right? Bet it's just 'cos I put firespinning down as a hobby.

Cancer Research UK Molecular Pharmacology Unit. Based at Ninewells hospital.

New team working on drug synthesis and also growing and doing stuff wth tumours and cancer cells. Sounds really interesting. And apparently they're eventually going to be building new labs specifically for this project.

Turns out they're actually based at the Wellcome Trust Building in the Uni. Nice shiny new lab, and the chairs in the write up area are still covered in plastic!

Should find out in the next few days. Fingers very firmly crossed.

ah, was wondering where in Ninewells they'd build new stuff. Wellcome building is even better, my fingers are crossed, too smile

(ps: if you should have to move to Dundee, go to Broughty Ferry... will save you running into 17 neds per square yard or whatever measure they use... but then you're used to dealing with secondary school kids, so Dundee probably won't scare you ubblol hug)

Still haven't heard, so don't think I got it. Boo. frown

My ex was from Dundee, so I know it fairly well, his mum lives in Broughty Ferry. Wouldn't move there anyway, would wait until could afford somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Fife, Perthshire or Angus and in the meantime stay with parents during the week. However, suspect is moot point now anyway.

More applications to do at least.

Stuart does single hander and zweihander aswell.
