Occupation(s): Tool and Dye. so unemployed cause michigan is screwed. things are really bad here in michigan. the entire economy seems like it's collapsing. everyone i know and everyone in their families is in financial crisis. lots of misery around here. in my opinion america is falling apart. but thats just my opinion and i guess i can't speak for the rest of the country

i think i'll add that i've been glowstringing for 2 years and a couple months. i love it. but i allways planned on moving to fire. even when i started with glowsticks. i don't know much about fire. it would be nice if i could find someone in my area to learn some things from. my area bein michigan. i like to drive. but if i don't thats cool cause i've been on my own the whole time so far. i have a friend that im teaching but thats about it.

I am originally from Bloomfield Township. I came to the Bay Area straight out of high school, spent five amazing years here, and then had to go back to Michigan (Ann Arbor) for med school. For four miserable years. I had the good sense to get the hell out again and went to New York and now I am back in San Francisco.
Why did I get the hell out of Michigan, well because...
I actually agree with you. I think the U.S.'s days as we know it are numbered. I live in the only part of the country that doesn't seem to be falling apart. California, if counted as its own country, has the 9th largest GDP in the world.
My prediction is that unless there is a MAJOR shake-up in Washington D.C. very soon, the US will not have resources to maintain a federal government much past 50 years. Usually, when great empires fall, the first symptom is a swelling of national pride as a compensation for the loss of respect and power. That is what got GWB elected. That's what might get McCain elected.
If the U.S. fragments, California would wind up as its own nation probably, and would be very similar to a lot of European countries. A lot of the rest of the U.S., however, might end up very third-world. In many ways, we're already headed that way. My mom, who lives in Michigan, went without power for two weeks after a storm. Europeans find this concept absolutely bizarre. In New York, I would often not have hot water or electricity. This doesn't happen in first-world countries. Yet...it happens here.
My mom is trying to sell her house in Michigan; she can't. She keeps dropping the price but I tell her that the reality is that she couldn't give it away for free. Nobody is moving to Michigan and so there is no market. Not even a small one. My advice to you is not to buy a house (you'll never sell it) and to finish your education and head West ASAP.
But before you do that...

to HoP and I hope you have a good time here. There is heaps of info on fire/poi etcetc and lots of links to other sites and stuff.
It isn't one of those online community where people write miles of bouncies and endless puns and flame wars and call each other names just to fill the threads and all that... but it's alive! A few years ago it was much more blah blah but its calmed down a lot. Hook into some of the discussion threads and go back into the years of technical discussion/vids and stuff... there's plenty!
And I'm sorry to hear things are so tough where you are. Sometimes I feel I live in the most charmed bubble on the planet. South East Queensland, half way up the east coast of Australia.
And I agree with you about the news. One of my housemates watches it and I pretty much leave the house to avoid being anywhere near even the sound of it. She's happy with that cos if I see it I can't stop heckling!
Funny, I was hearing the stock exchange rave at the end of the radio news the other day 'this one up 3% this one down 5%' yack yack and it crossed my mind how many other statistics they COULD be telling us..
