I think many of us are hippies. I think many of us aren't. I have been called a hippy for spinning, but I don't think that makes us all hippeis. It's just because people don't understand. It's like every person who wears black is suddenly a Goth to those who are less informed.

If it offends you, don't let it worry you. It's just some people who are either miss informed or just uninformed. They don't know you and they don't sound like the people you'd want to know either.

I think I can help.

1. Never "twirl" fire. You can hurl fire and possibly spin fire, but NEVER twirl.

2. Staff spinners are less likely to be exposed as the hippies they truly are.

3. The ONLY excuse for long hair is a mullet!

4. NEVER wear: Bell bottoms or tie-dyed shirts. Suggested attire: eyepatch, peg leg, hook hand and a bicorn or tricorn hat with not to poofy a plume.

5. What's a "mungbean"?

I've never been called a hippie, that makes me sad. biggrin

Anyone else noticed that Australians are generally "twirlers" but the Brits and Americans are "spinners"? Haven't noticed about the Kiwis or the others yet!

Ive been told i am starting to turn into a Hippy (or is it hippie?)

I know some people on here are Hippies, and others arent, we also have our goths (would you call them a Hippy if they were spinning fire?) we have a wide range of people here, not all of us are Hippies.

umm... call me uninformed, but what is a mungbean?

If it's traditional maori poi - most people are in a 'kapa haka' group so now sure 'bout that one confused

otherwise, like what you just said, "spin" e.g. do you spin yourself? if so what? from what I've seen it depends on whether you spin as a hobby or making money doing it smile

Which goes for L.e.d. poi, staff, flags, just about anything

I never knew that spinning was part of being a "hippy" before coming here. I've been vegan for a while, and I'm also an activist, so I always get called a hippy for that. Seems pretty incongruent to me.

If they're going to stereotype people, can't they at least do it in a way that isn't intirely random?

You got offended to the point of wanting to kill someone because they called you a Mung bean? ubblol

I would have wet myself laughing. That has to be the lamest insult I ever heard.

For those of you that don't know, a mung bean is the bean that bean sprouts sprout out of.

Come on people, if you can't rise above a few fools yelling stupid names at you, I think you're going to find the rest of life a little bit difficult. So what if someone calls you a hippy? What's so wrong with hippies?

If people yell various legume names at you just turn the other cheek and put a hand up to your mouth to stifle the giggle, as giggling at peoples insults sometimes makes them feel inadequate and we wouldn't want to do that now would we. wink

Well...................Ive had a good think about it and I think that there is a little bit of hippy in all of us - spinners anyway, (even a tiny tiny bit), personally Ive always been quite 'free' in a sense so alot of people see me as some kind of hippy, but most of the time people see me as wierd because Ive never really been branded as anything because I am what I am...............yeah, I dont really know what Im saying! wink

But I think the term 'hippie' has changed alot today, I it now as being free-minded and stuff.........................I dont know.......................I'll be over here --->

Hmm... I don't think you are a hippy...

Firstly, you wanted to kill him. That's not very hippy like, is it?

Secondly, Hippies use punctuation. This is because they believe that their views are important, and so want to make them easy to read... wink

Thirdly, you have a 'Crew'...

For lil minimosher kids (the 'alternative' crowd), we use the term greebo, seems to fit.

Hippies are usually self identified; a concious effort to distance oneself from the (percieved as being right wing by comparison) general public.

I'm assuming you're a greebo & the other guys were chavs (originally short for 'cheltenham average' by a private girl's school, this has now come to mean anyone wearing clothes that could be called 'bling'), in which case the best two ways to deal with it are ignore em or kick the crap out of em.

Your not pirates, you've no interest in treasure. You only go ashore looking for men, yarrgghh. Can I join you? lol

Its so true spinners get labled as hippies, one of the first hoppers I came across was cantus so I also thought you all were too lol but that didnt last long really.

Also my brother thinks spinners are high on weed 24 hours a day, he asked me to get him hooked up rolleyes

pretty sure the the correct response is "thank you!"

and since when was that ever an effective insult? does "hippie" mean the same thing in oz that "gutter punk" means here? if i called someone a hippie here, it would probably just mean i thought they smoked pot... i'm just not sure what they're even suggesting a "hippie" stereotypically does that's looked badly upon.
