So this thread is hijacked from here..

What are your favorite sounds?

Not including music, mine are:
*The sound of fire poi (there seems to be a general consensus on that)
*glass shattering (although I generally lose my appreciation of the sound in the panic that follows)
*food hitting a hot griddle
*a cat's purr
*the ocean
*thunder
*a healthy heart heard through a stethoscope.
*a fully-loaded Boeing 747-400 taking off from San Francisco Intl. as heard from the parking lot at the end of the runway.

Off the top of my head...

- Water lapping at stones
- Wind blowing through dry leaves in fall
- Bubbles underwater
- High-pitched motors/tiny machines
- Crickets at dusk
- Creaking of wood/trees in the wind/against water
- Chanting in languages I can't recognise

Like Mike, this isn't including music...though, in a sense, it is...I think the sound/music distinction is a hard one to make. A lot of my favorite "music" is just a bunch of weird sounds that suggest a kind of environment...no melody or "music" in the traditional sense at all.

That reminds me I love the sound of gentle waves on the side of a canoe (especially a canoe because a wooden canoe has a unique sound) acompanied by the sound of paddles swishing in the water with the occasional bump of the paddle along the gunnels.

I only have one to contribute right now but...

When our jets are spooling up their engines you get this really low pitch rumble I cant really describe it. The first time I heard it, it hit me in the chest like a ton of bricks, hehe the sound of 20,000 lbs of thrust hehe.

Here's a few, there are more, but it'll take a while to get them all down, I'll probably add more later:

water gurgling down a plughole, or along the banks of a riverbubblewrapthereminsthe hiss of flash boiled waterwhalesong

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

You're right, MikeG, breaking glass sounds great!

Waves breaking on a beach, SO soothing.
A stream in the mountains.
Coyote howls.
Big deep thunder.
Rain on a metal roof (means your inside, where it's nice and warm, eating soup and loking out at the rain dripping off of the Spanish moss).

The soft profound hush of a very still very early morning with a foot of fresh snow on the ground.

We got the MikeZ in the house, woot!Glue the ham, hat baby!

the sound of flames, any flames
the sweet sound of Fernando, one of the bussers at work, singing to himself as he works (He has a gorgeous voice)

the incredibly loud purr of my Charlemaigne (He can literally be heard across the room when he purrs)
The sizzle of steak as it cooks
The wonderful whirr of the shake machine at work
laughter
Shrieks of joy intermingled with giggling on a roller coaster
The sound of thunder through thin tent walls
Thats all I can think of now, but there is probably more
