Tone up your back and tummy muscles first. Do stomach curls and back exercises. that will give you a strong core to hold the handstand up.

When you step forward and put your hands down and lift your legs up pull in the stomach muscles to protect the back. It will also help you to hold the balance point mid way between falling forward and over backwards. Spread your fingers too. Learn to do a forward roll out of the handstand for if you topple over backwards. It puts less strain on your back to roll out rather than crab out.

Try to aim for you hands to be shoulder width apart. Get a wide base with your hands. For the ultimate handstand don't crane your neck foward. Be brave and get it in line with your bod. It might be worth trying an handstand on a hill as i used to find this easier and not quite so dauting and of course like Skully said, pratice your forward rolls from handstand as that will save toppling over fears. Hope that helps!

pah, toppling is half the fun biggrin

i do a lot of handstands to destress, and although i still use a wall, i have pretty much learned to just use it as a backup if i topple (so i dont break anything around the house), its just practice practice practice really, like the lovely ladies said, get the stomach toned, and one excercise i have found good for building up the shoulder support is doing pressups in the handstand (cant do em without a wall yet though)

urg! I remeber my gymnastics teacher used to make me stay behind and do sets of handstand pressups. I hated it.

But anyway... when you do the handstand against the wall try to get quite close to the wall so you are leaning at less of an angle. The use your feet to gently and slowly push away from the wall (whilst still in contact with it, until you are at a perfect 90 degree angle from the floor, and you are over your centre of gravity. Gradually become less reliant on the wall, until you can stay in a handstand and move your feet off the wall.

Then you are ready to try without the wall. As the others said, practice your forward rolls first, remembering to roll onto your sholders, not your head (very important!). Then go for it. At first you will probably roll straight over, but you will build your confidence and skill up to being able to do it. Remember to control how hard you kick up, as if you go too fast, you will go too far and topple over. If you have any kind freinds, ask them to hold their arms out to act like a wall for your first few attempts, to help 'catch' and support you. Most importantly, use a gym mat, or at least some very soft grass!.

This should help you gradually build up your confidence, which is the biggest battle. Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys smile

I have been doing them so my hands are as close to the wall as possible. I kick off a little and can balance for like a second, before having to walk forward to save myself from toppling.

I'm going to start trying without the wall.

Looks like im gonna have to exercise every night now to get my core stronger biggrin sounds fun, fun, fun!

Practice is the key... I find getting someone else to help to by holding legs your is good, you get them to hold you up perfectly straight then take their hands away, as soon as you slip they grab you again... Just keep doing this until you can stay perfectly on your own, or your arms give way... (then continue again the next day... lol)

I can only do a couple against a wall before my wrists start threatening to explode. What's that all about? My hands point forward so they're bent straight back.

Will those capable of telekinesis please raise my hand?

i try to keep my hand about 90 degrees apart (as in if you drew a line from each middle finger it'd meet at 90 degrees) and keep your fingers spread, i've never had the problem of wrists hurting, but this could be due to me doing a lot of rock climbing, do a lot of wrist exercise (O_o) and stretch them before you try

in the acrobatics section under hand balancing there is a link to an old book that has been put on line.

Good advice all, thanks. I climb too but I'm a bit out of practice which is why I was slightly worried when my wrists hurt. Got to get down to the wall tomorrow, haven't been since I've been back at uni. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Got a handstand last night for a good thirty seconds.

This is whats working for me.

Get into the correct posture while standing. Tummy in and such.

Get into a lunge position. One leg forward, bent. Other leg out behind and straight. Hands up so that its a straight line from the leg, up the back and arms. Then use the bent leg as a fulcrum and lean forward so that when the hands go down the back leg rises up.

Its having to much forward momentum and being to scared to keep my head down has been killing me. So working on that...

Finally starting to get a feel for it. Getting a little bit of control from my hands.

Handstands Rock!!!!

Love is the law.

solar plexus should not protrude.
t-he strongest handstands are when your posture is so straight that if you were lying with your back to the ground, a hand couldn't fit under your lumbar region (my gymnastics instructors used to try to jam their palms there as a semi-cruel test)
-likewise the shoulders should not be hunched.
-conversely, a curved posture causes unnecessary strain and limits what u can do and for how long u can hold a handstand.
-palms should be flat to prevent broken fingers
-it's a slow entry that prevents veer, promotes grace
-it's better to get proper *insured* training then reading off an online forum in a post written by a guy who's got a rather disturbing bendy pic of himself currently in the gallery.

After not being allowed to do handstand in the house... I go and do it when no ones around tongue However now I'm starting to think it was a bad idea too lol.

Just rolled forward after overbalancing and hit my knee against a door frame. Now it really, really, hurts! I can't actually beleive how much it hurts, coz I mean it's only my knee, they are tough as old boots... but it hurts soooo bad!!!!
