Sorry, couldn't resist. One thing that helped me was just sitting on the uni, supporting yourself on a chair or wall (as little as possible - try not to put any weight on it)for a while before attempting to move, just to make sure you're sitting comfortably and are well balanced. Zen unicycling!

Ade, that's not what I'm saying at all. If there's room for you both on the pavement, neither of you should have to walk in the road. If there's only room for one, the unicyclist should dismount or move into the road if they're comfortable with that. Simple common courtesy.
