So I'm going to be moving soon. Yup yup...my first real apartment!

And my mom is going to help me buy furniture!

So...I've already checked out:
Ikea <---love them, cheap, good stuff
West Elm <---awesome stuff, not so cheap
Target <--inexpensive, but I'm not so happy with their styles of furniture
Crate & Barrel <--more expensive, some good stuff, but not so much my style
Pier 1 Imports <--like their stuff, but wow...the pricetags...ouch.

So in general, my taste is sleek and modern (I like Ikea and West Elm the best). Any other suggestions? They should either ship and/or have stores in LA and New York.

You're got placed in New York?!? biggrin You should come up to a Toronto Spin sometime!
Ikea is great, but make sure you have an entire weekend to put it all together. I help alot of my friends move places and although Ikea kicks incredible amounts of ass, it's a pain to put together -.-

No, I don't know my placement yet, but 99% chance it's either NYC or LA. Besides, I'm in Michigan now, so I'm closer to you than New York. biggrin

Watch out for the shipping charges from IKEA. It's usually cheaper to go to a store and rent a vehicle to transport your stuff than to have them ship furniture.

That being said, most of the furniture for my first apartment came from IKEA. Their dressers are decent and their real wood stuff is great. I would advise against an IKEA bed though...they don't exactly hold up well to much movement. I should also mention that a lot of their cheaper stuff is all particle board. Not bad overall, but if you are buying stuff now to last you 20 years or so, I'd opt for something different. The plus is that even I have never had a problem assembling all my furniture, and I've had the range of dining room table, chairs, entertainment center, bed, dresser, night stand, and end tables. I would say that you can only put one major piece of furniture together in a weekend though. This is because you need an allen wrech (supplied with everything) to assemble most of the stuff, and well, when you've turned that many screws in a day, your hands WILL hurt.

That being said, Yay! for new furniture.

Oh, and Pier 1 has clearance stores, so you might try to find one of them if you are still interested. I got my couch at one and it was discounted $400 bucks!

Ikea has a *huge* store in NJ just outside of NYC. I'm figuring that since you can put people back together, you shouldn't have much of a problem with thier furniture wink However, you do need to read the instructions. wink

Also, Pier 1 has great accent pieces on sale or clearance.

You might also want to hit up consignment/2nd hand stores, property auctions, estate sales. Great furniture, cheap prices (usually) and you can really express your personality.

Btw, nice signature! hug ubblove

Depends on where in MI you are and where in NY you might be :P NY is a 2-3 hour trip depending on traffic and conditions.
And if you are so close to Toronto already why haven't you aleady visited? Or if you have, why was I not informed of this visit?
And Pele is on to something. 2nd hand stores, police auctions, garage sales biggrin Those are where you find the GOOD stuff! I am a full supporter of buying random stuff at garage sales and thrift stores! Infact, I'm going thrift shopping this weekend biggrin

Spritie, thank you for the warning on the Ikea beds. I definately need a bed that will tolerate movement. wink (Oh...and the possiblility of a squirmy man being handcuffed to the headboard ubbangel )

Pele, I figured you wouldn't mind me borrowing the sigline. I'll definately accessorize from 2nd-hand stores, but capital furniture I want new. I'm going for sleek and modern. You know, if I'm gonna be a young urban professional, I might as well play the part. biggrin

Angel, I haven't visited because I'm in med school and haven't had time. Worry you not. I need to visit Toronto soon. biggrin

What you need, mate, is a Fridge with a chrome finish, that will scream sleek and modern through out your entire place.
Lightning, you could buy second hand stuff, and for a fraction of the price of new stuff, re decorate/paint/finish it with modern looking stuff. It will save you a bundle of cash that can be better spent on other things, like maybe food for the next month wink

Ok...so I'll have a paycheck...and no time.

You can have time or money, it seems. Both? That's a bit much to pull off.

There are a lot of stores also on LI (long island) just outside of NYC. I'm talking HUUUUUUUGE stores, and lots of'em. Don't forget Price Club/costco, they're ok for stuff, but also be sure to check out tag sales, they have a loooot of stuff that you can get for very little $

I think all you yanks are flat pack weeklings!!!! tongue I love Ikea, and compared to some flatpack places their stuff is simple as a sausage to put together. We have an Ikea bed and have found it fine, although it was a pain in the ass trying to find all the bits in the store room - 4 different locations, and no coffee on the way - man it was tough!

But then where else can you furnish a whole flat for less than £1000? No where in the UK anyway!

Virtually all my stuff is Ikea, I also have a few bits from Pier 1. It's not what I want to live with forever, but Ikea can't be beaten on quality/style for the price on a lot of its stuff. Delivery in the UK at least is extremely dodgy, it took them about 10 weeks to deliver my sofa after 4 failed attempts. Not all of their stuff in the UK thou is available in the stores, dunno about US
