So I'm going to be moving soon. Yup yup...my first real apartment!
And my mom is going to help me buy furniture!
So...I've already checked out:
Ikea <---love them, cheap, good stuff
West Elm <---awesome stuff, not so cheap
Target <--inexpensive, but I'm not so happy with their styles of furniture
Crate & Barrel <--more expensive, some good stuff, but not so much my style
Pier 1 Imports <--like their stuff, but wow...the pricetags...ouch.
So in general, my taste is sleek and modern (I like Ikea and West Elm the best). Any other suggestions? They should either ship and/or have stores in LA and New York.

Ikea is great, but make sure you have an entire weekend to put it all together. I help alot of my friends move places and although Ikea kicks incredible amounts of ass, it's a pain to put together -.-

No, I don't know my placement yet, but 99% chance it's either NYC or LA. Besides, I'm in Michigan now, so I'm closer to you than New York.

Watch out for the shipping charges from IKEA. It's usually cheaper to go to a store and rent a vehicle to transport your stuff than to have them ship furniture.
That being said, most of the furniture for my first apartment came from IKEA. Their dressers are decent and their real wood stuff is great. I would advise against an IKEA bed though...they don't exactly hold up well to much movement. I should also mention that a lot of their cheaper stuff is all particle board. Not bad overall, but if you are buying stuff now to last you 20 years or so, I'd opt for something different. The plus is that even I have never had a problem assembling all my furniture, and I've had the range of dining room table, chairs, entertainment center, bed, dresser, night stand, and end tables. I would say that you can only put one major piece of furniture together in a weekend though. This is because you need an allen wrech (supplied with everything) to assemble most of the stuff, and well, when you've turned that many screws in a day, your hands WILL hurt.
That being said, Yay! for new furniture.
Oh, and Pier 1 has clearance stores, so you might try to find one of them if you are still interested. I got my couch at one and it was discounted $400 bucks!

There are a lot of stores also on LI (long island) just outside of NYC. I'm talking HUUUUUUUGE stores, and lots of'em. Don't forget Price Club/costco, they're ok for stuff, but also be sure to check out tag sales, they have a loooot of stuff that you can get for very little $

I love Ikea, and compared to some flatpack places their stuff is simple as a sausage to put together. We have an Ikea bed and have found it fine, although it was a pain in the ass trying to find all the bits in the store room - 4 different locations, and no coffee on the way - man it was tough!
But then where else can you furnish a whole flat for less than £1000? No where in the UK anyway!

Delivery in the UK at least is extremely dodgy, it took them about 10 weeks to deliver my sofa after 4 failed attempts. Not all of their stuff in the UK thou is available in the stores, dunno about US
