While traveling abroad this summer (and having the time of my life!) it hit me that every country I went to had different names for different fuels, different stores and different logistical problems/advantages for fire twirling (after searching through Paris for a store I couldn't find and a fuel I couldn't spell ). Perhaps if we all stuck our heads together we could make a thread for our own city for others to use as a resource... As I always say: "A local is worth a thousand guidebooks"

Feel free to add any other topics I forgot. And maybe I'll have to bump this thread up before next summer.

For example... My input would be:

CITY:
New York City (Lower Manhattan)

PLACE TO GET FUEL AND FUEL NAMES:
KMart: 8th street and 4th Avenue ("Lamp oil"-by lamps, "White gas"-in camping section)

Also some other local "Hardware stores"

PLACE TO SPIN:
Washington Square Park, Union Square.

LOGISTICS:
I never heard of a problem or arrest in a public park but have been shut down by the police in Union Square. I've also heard of people spinning in Central Park but that's a bit uptown and perhaps dangerously large at night. Technically it is illegal and sometimes the police will let you know that.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

Great Idea NYC!!!

LOCATION: South Central CT Shore

PLACES TO BUY FUEL/FUEL NAMES: Walmart, Home Depot, Most Local Hardware Stores, some gas stations. (call them first.)

"Lamp Oil (parrafin)" but lamps or in a special section lablelled "fuels."

"Kerosene" at some gas stations or in the "fuels" section of a hardware store.

"White Gas" Coleman's Camping Fuel.... availible in the Camping section or sometimes in teh cooking section.

PLACES TO SPIN:
New London- Ocean Beach.
East Lyme/Niantic- Rocky Neck State Park (closes at sundown)
Old Saybrook- Harvey's Beach (did i screw up that name?)
East Haddam- park (i need the name)
Westbrook- (need name of beach still) Madison/Clinton- Hammonasset State park
Norwich- park (need name)
Some private houses/beaches availible.

LOGISTICS: open flame is illegal in the state of CT, but no one has had a problem with it so far that i know of. the smaller the town you are in, the more careful you should be about the cops.

USA: Name your place

Place to get fuel:
Wal*Mart and any other store ending with Mart.
Any hardware store, True Value, Lowes, Ace, Home Depot

Camping sections and out door furnature.

Place to spin:
Well in San Diego, any beach. In New Mexico, any parking lot, avoid anything not paved due to wild fire hazerd.

Logisitics:

Cops in New Mexico, they are more worried about underage drinking and drugs then your fire.

San Diego, I have never been botherd.

Nice to see you back NYC - damn teachers get far too much holiday

Nice Idea for a thread.

Area :
Bath (UK)

Fuel Purchase :
Homebase (most expensive about £4.50 for 4 ltrs)
Guildhall Market (£3.50 for 4 ltrs)
Garage Pump (lansdown) (£0.50 per ltr but need container)
24 hr garage (lower bristol road) (£4 something for 4 ltrs but it is a 24 hour supply )

Spinning :
Just about any of the parks seem to be ok. Queens Square is a good central place, tend to meet regularly on a Monday night.
The Circus is slightly darker, has good acoustics if anyone sings and pretty surroundings.
Would like to spin in front of the royal cresent too (victoria park area)

Logistics :

Well never had a problem while spinning, police cars, fire engines and ambulances quite often pass us at Queens Square and we have never been stopped. I have once been stopped by the police at about 3am but that was when we were on the way to play with the fire sword and a friend was waving the sword around, just got asked what it was and when we explained it was for fire performances we were asked not to wave it in the street and sent on our way

Fuel Purchase :
Camping Fuel or keroscene(stinky) from:
Canadian Tire (CDN$3.99/3.8Litre container)
Wallmart
any camping shop

Spinning :
Trinity Bellwoods park on tuesdays, or any park whenever you want. Or Cherry beach(right side) on sundays

Logistics :
So long as you're not busking they probably won't bother you, but they don't allow people to busk without a city permit.

CITY:
Paris, FRANCE

PLACE TO GET FUEL AND FUEL NAMES:
BHV shopping mall near the Hotel de ville but that'd be expensive. Try almost any supermarket like Franprix, Casino, etc ...
Also most local "Hardware stores"

PLACE TO SPIN:
Jardin Tino Rossi near Jussieu / INstitut du Monde arabe by the seine river. In teh summer : fire every night. Winter mostly week ends sometimes ...
Rue des Trois freres (near Montmartre) there is a little place quite close to a juggling shop called "Bonjour l'artiste" where fire / juggler / spinners gather. Again , mainly in summer

LOGISTICS:
Busking is illigal in Paris allthough wide spread. Spinning fire does not seem to bother cops too much especially the above mentioned spots. After 1/2 am they are more concerned of who holds drugs than who's spinning fire.

Where to get fuel:
Walmart or equivalent: usually has white gas and citronella lamp oil
Home Depot: citronella lamp oil (may have kero and other fuels). Open 24 hours
Breed & Co hardware: clear lamp oil, kerosene, denatured alcohol, etc.
Academy: clear lamp oil, white gas

Places to spin:
Remote park locations would be best. Zilker, Mayfield. Fire-free spinning fairly common at Barton Springs.

Logistics:
Fire not tolerated in busy areas. Fire might be tolerated in remoter areas, (except during burn bans), but if someone complains to the cops, the cop will tell you to cut it out.

I'm adding the following item, just 'cuz.

Community:
Austin has a big, friendly, and fairly cohesive fire community.

Hrmmmm... I somehow thought that firespinning was big in New Zealand and Australia... C'mon kids, take a second and tell us weary travelers where to buy our fuel! I'd like to be able to rewrite this into a resource...

Also, Ray, the stores you mentioned are predominantly West Coast. They don't exist in Manhattan for example and are hard to find/nonexistant outside of the island.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

Thats what you get for living on an island, NYC hehe

Naw dun go to Home Depot anyway, I had to pay nearly $8.00 for a gallon of lamp oil, and to top it off the stuff had such a high flash point I had to hold my lighter to it for like 30 seconds before it got hot enough to burn!!

I was not happy, but hey $5 of that $8 wasnt mine so no biggie hehe

Here's what I learned abroad:

City:
Prague, Czech Republic

Places to buy fuel:
Bum it off the quasi-homeless guys spinning on the Charles Bridge. They call it "Petrol"

Logistics:
While it is a lovely place to spin and there are lots of tourists, making it a good busking opportunity, it is illegal to spin on the Charles Bridge in Prague. I don't know what they do to you if they catch you because I hid my tools in time and I don't want to find out. So, just be careful.

Fuel & Where to Purchase :
*Kerosene, aka kero, from most petrol stations, hardware stores and grocery stores.

*Citronella Oil (lamp oil) from hardwares

*White Gas - dunno really, only ever used it in Canada. Probably available at most camping/disposals stores

*Firewater - we use this most of the time. We get it from Juggleart over the internet, but those in Melbourne can probably purchase directly from their shop. Fantastic product.

Spinning :
Too many to mention!

Logistics :
So long as you're not busking they probably won't bother you, but they don't allow people to busk without a city permit. But we've done it and got away with it several times... Pretty cruisy in general

Fuel:
Shell SolT, Pegasol, available in 20 litre drums (not the easiest to carry while travelling but good value) around $60 available from several major shell distributors around the city or from Concentrate fire equipment workshop, they have a website somewhere or something.
good fuel, not oily, no smell or smoke. safe for indoor use. slightly hotter flame than kero or parrafin but a lower flashpoint.

spinning
during summer every second friday at Edinburugh gardens. or head to a Confest at Easter or on New years. also any major psychadelic trance outdoor (where you'll find me!)

Legalities
no fire allowed in CBD due to some reklessness on the part of some idiot quite a few years ago. you could get away with busking in brunswick st or outside luna park. southbank is a good pitch but maybe a bit close to the cbd to get away with much fire.

Okay first off...what the crap is busking?
Is it like you have a little hat and you spin and people give you change? If I'm way off sorry thats that best I could think of...oh yea, and adamrice...I was in austin last week for EDC (too bad it was canned) but me and my friends went to 6th street to find something to do and we where at this tattoo/peircing place (forbiden fruit?) and there was this really cool girl that does henna tattoo's. so being the strange folke that me and my friends are we get some henna done and to find out she spins fire! I was NO WAY! I sat there and talked to her for soooo long while me and my friends got drawn on. She said that she knew sage and again I was like NO WAY! But when we where all done we went out into the street and spun out dry chains...it was fun non the less. I just thought it was weird b/c no one in Oklahoma City spins fire...that I know of.

oh yea

OKLAHOMA CITY
Fuel:
Like most people say Wal-Mart, you can get white gas in the camping section, its cheep too.
I know there are a few places that sell Kero...look in any yellow pages under said fuel.

Where to spin:
No idea...we do have a canal down town but I haven't gotten around to talking to the cops or fire marshel about spinning there...I mean think about it, there is more water there than anything and I personaly think it would look really cool with the flames reflecting off of it. I have been to a few parties that will let us (me and my friends) spin.

Personaly I don't think the cops in this area would like fire spinning around but if you don't get cought then hey all the more fun.

Oh aye, thought I'd my 2p worth:

Glenrothes area, Scotland

Fuel: I get decently priced parafin from various garages in the area. Famous Army Stores sell Coleman.

Where to play: Since the Fife area is pretty rural, there are loads to choose from. My favourite is to drive up to Falkland and go to the top of East Lomond Hill.

Never ever had a problem with police, farmers etc.

i can see this becoming a 'classic' post that someone will make a leatherbound cover for and youll be able to buy in a set for lotsa money....heres what you need to know in
TASMANIA

WHERE TO GET FUEL: cheapest is Purity or Coles supermarkets and chickenfeed (bargain store) petrol stations like Ampol, Shell, BP etc, but you can get it at camping shops and stuff as well

WHATS IT CALLED? kerosene, citronella oil is good and cheap as well, a mixture of both lasts a while too...

PLACE TO SPIN: anywhere, but if you want company go to Salamanca. beaches are cold but if you can find a non-windy spot its beautiful

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: as far as i know there are no permanent laws, but we do get total fire bans in summer, so id stick to the backyard or secluded beach. there arent too many spinners down here so your likely to get an audience, my neighbors still come out to watch!

LOGISTICS: no idea, never had a problem, when Nomad was here the police just looked at us and didn't say anything, depends on the policemen though...

FUEL: KERO, lamp oil (pretty much anywhere supermarket, petrol station, corner store and camping stores. just what everyone else in Australia says.
Where to spin: Any park, beach, mountain. good spinning meets are Burliegh heads beach front park on sunday nights and MOONFEST detail in the events calandar. Also if in byron go down the beach on any given night and there will be a bunch of spinners down there. there is a shop called fairy floss if you go there and ask you will be hooked up with most fire spinners in the byron area.
and for gold coast just go to a shop on the gold coast highway at palm beach called three worlds, its like a house/shop thing, they will hook you up with fire people in gold coast!!!
yeah watch out for the fire bans, but down the beach you should be right!!!

heres a bit of info on the sunshine coast (just north of brisbane) * i went spinning down the beach (while on holiday) and had to talk my way out of a fine from the local ranges!!!! so head to a quite beach, not moololabah or king beach!!!!
this was during a period with no fire ban!!!!

PLACE TO GET FUEL AND FUEL NAMES:
Parafin to be found hardware stores. In the city there's one on Georges Street and Talbot street.
Should cost about 7/8 euro.

PLACE TO SPIN:
During day and early evening St. Stephen's green is nice. Dartmouth square near leason street is also good.

Busking: Grafton street, though I don't know how long you'll be allowed to do fire before you're stopped. Tis down to discretion and number of people roudn etc. They should only ask you to stop that's all. Same applies to the square in Temple bar.

Steer clear of swinging fire in isolated places at night in the city centre. We found a lovely park in the city centre before but you attract unwanted scum like moths to a flame.

LOGISTICS:
Any hassle you get from police should be minimal (tell you to stop at worst). I've lit up in front of the police before and they did nothing.

Logistics: There's seems to be no law against spinning fire (yet) in England if you're not busking or teaching.
