...is the name of the glowstaff I've just finished making. It's rechargeable, has 46 superbright LEDs in, and is a svelte 20mm diameter. It's bright enough to hurt your eyes in a well lit room, and about the same weight as my normal 1.5m staffs.
I'm still working on the full writeup/manufacturing instructions, you can read what I've got so far over here .
There's a little video here ... Don't know who it is spinning , but I know it's not me, cos I'm in the background getting tangled up in fire. (Also it works beter with mplayer if you use -nosound) I'll try and get some more footage sometime soon.

so I'm watching closely.
I don't know whether you have a background in stress analysis, structural design, materials, fatigue analysis, engineering and product design. But if not and you need any help with any of those give me a ring and I'm happy if i can to try to support a worthy cause.
I made a brilliant new juggling prop yesterday... and it works too more details to follow shortly

squarefish: I got the polycarb from easter road plastics, here in edinburgh, but there might be somewhere closer to you. It's a bitch to get hold of, and stupidly expensive when it's stocked (it goes for about 20p a metre if you want £500 worth made, or £10/m from a stockist.) There's a place I was in talks with who do some for about £6/m, plus vat and delivery, which is www.davis-plastics.co.uk
Polycarbonate is amusingly bendy. I thought it would be rock hard, but no. Doesn't shatter like acrylic, though, which is the main thing. Future designs might have an acrylic tube for stiffnes and a polycarbonate one for impact resistance. Maybe.

The full details are on the link in the first post (there's some photos up there now as well, but they don't show construction), but the general idea is that the batteries and LEDs are build up on sections of PC tube cut in half, and then "potted" (technical term for covered in glue). These then bolt loosley together, and get slid into a single solid outer shell, and bolted into place. The forces on the individual components are quite low, except the batteries, which are securely glued. The impace forces on the outer shell can get quite high, so it's probably going to get a silicone impact damper around each end. It's taken a few throws and a few drops with no visible effect so far.
It's also a prototype, so I'm seeing how it all holds up. The next one will be stronger

Yup, nice one mate. I think I'll go for silicone at first, because it's transparent and easily scuplted (and I'm addicted to it... ), but I'll check out walking stick stoppers too.
