...is the name of the glowstaff I've just finished making. It's rechargeable, has 46 superbright LEDs in, and is a svelte 20mm diameter. It's bright enough to hurt your eyes in a well lit room, and about the same weight as my normal 1.5m staffs.

I'm still working on the full writeup/manufacturing instructions, you can read what I've got so far over here .

There's a little video here ... Don't know who it is spinning , but I know it's not me, cos I'm in the background getting tangled up in fire. (Also it works beter with mplayer if you use -nosound) I'll try and get some more footage sometime soon.

biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

Sounds pretty damned nice.

Does it make cool wobbling noises when you spin it around and stop it quickly? tongue

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

confused It does... and hopefully will continue to.

The only thing it doesn't seem to do is cut through the blast doors, it just kinda bounces off. So I can never stop the millenium falcon from leaving, and Broken Arrow gets stabbed by the Wudan monkeys.

I need a camera.

And everything I just said was definitely offtopic But then it's a slightly boring topic until I get some photos. biggrin

WOW. I want photos.

Yo Mo-seph, I like the way you thinking, I've been meaning to make something like this for a while
so I'm watching closely.

I don't know whether you have a background in stress analysis, structural design, materials, fatigue analysis, engineering and product design. But if not and you need any help with any of those give me a ring and I'm happy if i can to try to support a worthy cause.

I made a brilliant new juggling prop yesterday... and it works too smile more details to follow shortly

Nope, not really. Well, maybe a bit, but I ignored it all and just did what seemed like the best plan. There's an alarming amount of flex, but I figure it's polycarbonate, and it can take it. Hopefully...

Love to have a chat about stuff. Maybe when I come through london (19/20 dec) we can do lunch and talk tech?

squarefish: I got the polycarb from easter road plastics, here in edinburgh, but there might be somewhere closer to you. It's a bitch to get hold of, and stupidly expensive when it's stocked (it goes for about 20p a metre if you want £500 worth made, or £10/m from a stockist.) There's a place I was in talks with who do some for about £6/m, plus vat and delivery, which is www.davis-plastics.co.uk

Polycarbonate is amusingly bendy. I thought it would be rock hard, but no. Doesn't shatter like acrylic, though, which is the main thing. Future designs might have an acrylic tube for stiffnes and a polycarbonate one for impact resistance. Maybe.

erm, no offence, but how does 24 ultra glow leds, battery pack, and wireing all stay together when you drop of concrete?

or drop during a spin?

Lots of glue wink

The full details are on the link in the first post (there's some photos up there now as well, but they don't show construction), but the general idea is that the batteries and LEDs are build up on sections of PC tube cut in half, and then "potted" (technical term for covered in glue). These then bolt loosley together, and get slid into a single solid outer shell, and bolted into place. The forces on the individual components are quite low, except the batteries, which are securely glued. The impace forces on the outer shell can get quite high, so it's probably going to get a silicone impact damper around each end. It's taken a few throws and a few drops with no visible effect so far.

It's also a prototype, so I'm seeing how it all holds up. The next one will be stronger biggrin

Yup, nice one mate. I think I'll go for silicone at first, because it's transparent and easily scuplted (and I'm addicted to it... wink ), but I'll check out walking stick stoppers too.

Cheers!

Wow. I am going to have a look at the specs and such on your site then try the luxeon LEDs to see what can be done with fewer but stronger brightness. The luxeon star LED is apparently up to 6 times brighter than standard, and they do a VERY strong one for £25 each that is reportedly 50 times brighter (!!!) than a standard LED.

Hoooaaaah!

Have you ever noticed the resemblance between Mr Miyagi and Yoda...mmmm...strange this is...

Well, kind of.... wink

They are made by luxeon, as far as I know, but they're not the luxeon star emitters that need heatsinks and driver circuits. They go for about 25p each if you find the right place, and they're sometimes called "superflux", and sometimes "lumiled", and they take either 20mA or 50mA depending on which datasheets you believe. (The luxeon stars go up to 5 watts, which is serious engineering biggrin )

Good luck!
