I just heard on Radio 1 that John Peel has died from a massive heart attack while on holiday with his wife in Peru.

For those who don't know, John Peel was Radio 1's most long-serving DJ - there are few people alive who know more about music than him.

He always championed new music and launched the careers of some of Britain's greatest bands.

He'll be missed

A ripple of "what!?" and "you're kidding" just went round my office when someone read this. Radio 1 will never be the same again.

John Peel's influence was wide reaching and even strongly influenced the development of American music in previos decades.

Well done, and may he DJ on in the great studio in the sky!

What can I say? confused I feel like I've lost a friend.

If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be listening to the music I do now and neither would most of my sisters, who are in their 40s now! I loved Home Truths, as did my mum, who is only 2 years younger than him. That's how universal his appeal was. There can be no replacement, to me he was the best DJ ever.

It's always the good ones who go early, but his was in no way an unfulfilled life.

Rest in peace, John frown

Both my parents are in their early 60s (John Peel was 65) and they were shocked to hear of his death. It has touched everyone.

It's like somebody said before, we never believe that some people - especially someone with so much knowledge and talent - will die someday. I've found myself thinking about that alot today.

I suppose, at least it's a good thing that it was very quick.

There goes one of the world's few truly 'jolly nice blokes'. It's a testiment to John that amazingly quickly people of all ages have been filling the BBC's tribute pages.

It's hard to explain to non Brits who, and what, John Peel was. The man was a Pirate DJ since the term was invented - quite literally as he sat in a ship off the coast broadcasting illegally and helping launch the new music scene that led us to where we are.

He changed my life, his programs created my taste in music, he made me the person I am today.
I feel I knew him, he told me about his wife and his kids (on the radio), he made me laugh, made me cry, made me think.
I am so sad that he is gone, I can't believe it, I am totally gutted.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friend.
The world is a lesser place without him.
