Not exactly new to the site, but never bothered to introduce myself - until I saw all the fun that was being had by others. And the truth is, this thread is all about me! Suits my ego down to the ground.

SO, I am neither Gerald, nor Arthur, I'm also not an old hag.

I shall quell my tendancies to outright lying (partly because I know I'd be immediately uncovered... though that sounds appealing :dirtylaugh:) and talk about the "real me". Nice.

Full name - Laura Michelle Egginton. I really like jam. especially seeded raspberry jam.

My favourite toy - I have favoured the joys of poi for a good few years now, started spinning in 2001 ish. I've had a great time spinning with everyone I know and met over the years and continue to constantly be inspired biggrinhug thanks all ubblove

I study languages - German, easy fluency

- Portuguese - can converse

- Spanish, I can get misunderstood, but generally survive only mortally offending the odd person.

- French, gets me into all kinds of [Old link]...

currently (Sep2004) working on... contact poi, RHD inspired throws and moves, bloody whip catchescensored, various tangles, improing the design of my fire poi. Also improoveing my spelling.

I also play with sticks (badly) and juggle (also pretty badly, but its all about the passing smile)

so thats me in a nutella shell - oh how we do laugh, "what wit!" they cried in unison.

hugs (snogs if your lucky, but not you Maderlock, that's just wrong)

yes Laura, I'll give you AALLLLL my money, I'll transfer it over tonight.

By the way, you are very cool, my mum told me so... you know why? well, I'll tell you. Some might call you a bit of a loser for posting so many consecutive posts in your own introduction thread on a internet forum in the middle of the night, but no! you're not a loser, your a winner. That's right, tonight on this seemingly inauspicious night of nights, Laura, you have won the greatest prize beknownst to man... the prize of dignity. That's right you beautiful beautiful daughter of the earth, through the exhaustion-fuelled haze of insomnia you have battled and *sigh* look how far you've come. yes, 1.87 metres from your place of slumber to the iiyama flat-screen monitor of life. Congratulations.

Now take your dignity and run! run for the hills! where you can nurture it and call it your own forever more.

ahem, ok that was random... I should really get some sleep one of these nights rolleyes

well, I'm going to keep up this newly started tradition of being the only one who posts in my thread and start using it as kind of a blog. I feel like I'm starting to lose track of what I'm doing, so at least I can vaguely remind myself here smile

right.

I've been wanting to go to Brasil ever since I started seeing Julio (the ex) and even after we broke up that's never gone away. I'm still learning the language, reading about the country, playing capoeira and spending as much time as I can with my brasilian friends... every time I hear someone speaking brasilian portuguese it makes me smile and inspired to work as hard as i can to get there! what is it about that place? I guess its the culture of music and dancing and heat that is a large part of the attraction, but the rest is hard to put into words ubblove

I'm planning to go there in November and stay until Apr/May. The idea is to check out the fire-spinning scene over there and document it as part of some research that I'm hoping will allow me to do a Masters degree based on cultural studies... I also want to use the time over there to inspire my own performance and dance skills. I love the rhythms of Brasil, the mix of African, native Indian and European influences and I cant wait to see how fire-dancing is interpreted by the brasilians! smile

In terms of my performing and choreography career, it seems like a bit of a respite, since I'm not really working a performance circuit out there... but I think actually that this is a great step forward - I'll be putting together choreography (certainly for the work I have in Sao Paulo) with brasilian spinners, who have probably never been exposed to any other styles, plus training dance, capoeira and circus skills in Rio biggrin biggrin ... I think Brasil is really going to open up soon in the world spinning scene, it's getting really popular out there and I think that making contacts now is no bad thing - hopefully leading to more work out there in the future ubbrollsmile

wow, it all sounds so exciting when I read the words back... but also so far away from where I am right now, part-timing in a restaurant taking whatever other gigs I can, which aren't that many at the moment rolleyes... ho hum, a means to an end...

I'm gonna stop writing now.

Swiss Fire:
yes the fire scene in Switzerland is starting to take off! And I've been a small part of it biggrin I've just got back from working with the newly formed Basel-based troupe, Swiss Fire on a brand spanking new show... and they are gonna rock! bounce

For those who don't know much about the european fire community outside of the UK, there are some countries that seem to have a concentrated wealth of inspired spinners and performers and event organisers. eek Take Austria for example! Tiny little Innsbruck is alone host to about 3 or 4 different performance groups, ubbrollsmile not to mention the other numerous groups from across Vienna, Linz, Graz and around! And for the last few years they've been increasingly resourceful in collaborating together, hosting fire-festivals and conventions (like Feuerfest in Graz, or Firedance nr Linz) and organising huge collaborative shows (Hosch a fur in Voralberg)... and then you have Switzerland right next door, who on the face of things look to be completely oblivious to all this activity... meditate

...but no! Little by little, and lead by pioneering performers who have long been in the game, but rarely pushed the scene on their home ground, the Swiss performers are coming out of the woodwork!! angel2 and are training with a vivacity of a nation with something to proove!!
This newly formed group, with whom I had the pleasure of working recently, are shooting for the moon! Just next month will see the first ever Swiss fireconvention-meet, organised by Swiss Fire...sunny cool then of course there is the founding of their own group, which they are planning to expand into a community/society to unite all the Swiss fire-spinners and keep everyone informed and inspired to do more! juggle weavesmiley ubbloco bounce2

it got me to thinking... why we spinners still all so divided in our countries? HoP brings a lot of us together, but we could still do more... plus the HoP/Falmouth etc meets all are great for trick share and playful development, but what about performance?! It'd be lovely to have our own UK festival that brought together various talents to work collaboratively on a wicked show... hmmm... thoughts... meditate

I'm off on Tuesday 9th and am more than slightly excited! bounce2 boing!

SOooooooOOO... if anyone's around on sunday and at a loose end, come to a little pube (heh heh) sorry pub nr Waterloo called Crown and Cushion or The Walrus Social, (westminsterbridge rd) - the pubs are opposite each other and I don't know which one is better yet, but I'll be in one of them biggrin (for googlemap purposes: SE1 7HR or SE1 7RW)

anyway I shall be having a few drinks, saying goodbye to people, maybe attempting to create a new species of balloon animal, and most probably nursing a saturday night hangover with the wonderful cure that is Guiness (its good for you). All are welcome ubbrollsmile

otherwise... see you when I return in April (yes I am assuming that I will see everyone on HoP upon my return, as I'm sure you'll all want to be holding the biggest celebration of the century, yes?) biggrin

much love and jammy hugs,

Aw, thanks pink one! hug

The time to return to Blighty is fast approaching and I'm torn in two by it! There are lots of things to look forward to on my return, smile like seeing friends and family, wnd working on exciting new projects!! biggrin But at the same time it's tearing my heart to leave this wonderful place!!! frown I've had it really good here, I've learned huge amounts, had time and space for training and choreographing, met some great peeps and have barely scratched the surface of the amazing culture of this place - there's so much I still want to do and see, people I wanted to visit...

sigh, there'd just better be a next time soon...rolleyes

in other news... drumroll please ubbrollsmile... I finished writing my solo poi choreo yesterday!! woooooo! I'm feeling quite good about it, though there's lots of things I had tried to put in that were physically impossible or too demanding to be solid in a show frown *must get better must get better* but I still managed to include a lot of things I wanted - contact moves being one of them! bounce And all that's left now is to practice all weekend for the caberet show on Monday! eek

and then bring on the BJC!! wink
