Hey there everybody!
I'm a student at London uni and I live in Cambridge during my holidays. I don't drink cos of epilepsy but I do smoke (though I'm trying to cut down on that). I like all sorts of music but not country or manufactured pop. I love drum and bass, funk and chill, and I love my poi!
I first saw fire poi this year when I went to a party after my final exams at uni. There was live Drum and Bass being played on the roof of this house, and some people doing fire poi. I thought, 'I gotta get me some of those..' and despite remembering only about 5 names out of a possible 50 from the party, I remembered the poi!
Anyways, a little over two months ago I started using some comet poi, got addicted, and basically have been practising for about an hour a day since then. About a month ago I bought monkey fist fire poi, and practised with them to get used to the weight and feel of chains. Then a little over a week ago... FIRST BURN!! was a little timid at first, but then did wraps constantly when burning and blackened up my hoody and jeans until i wasn't worried about the flames anymore, now I feel free to revel in my pyromania! I LOVE POI!!

Edit: now updated to include basic info

Name: Guy

Location: Cambridge

Hometown: Born in Boston (the UK one!) moved to cambridge 5 years later

DOB:27/3/81

Age: 24

Sex:Male

Occupation(s):unemployed but soon to be a student yet again

Favorite Food(s): Chinese (especially Dim Sum), anything sweet, anything chocolate, mild curries, mushrooms with blue cheese

Favorite Color(s): Not sure really but I seem to wear blue a lot, and i like to have red colours in my room

Toys: poi, staff, nunchuks, flag on a pole (wielded sword style), rope dart, cj ball

Hobbies other than the obvious: shoddy guitar playing (and singing songs about pot when no-ones about), experimental cooking (very occasionally), reading, drawing on my hand on long journeys, listening to music all the time, worrying about the environment, playing compulsive computer games, photography (occassionally), watching Kung fu films (especially the badly dubbed old ones) and skinning up.

Education: BA Ancient World Studies 2:1, waiting for my MA in Public Archaeology marks, about to start a TEFL course hopefully

Favorite Book(s): Dark Materials trilogy (Philip Pullman), Armageddon the musical trilogy (Robert Rankin), Dear Monkey (abr. Alison Waley), the Dark is Rising books, Satanic Verses (although I've only managed to read it once I really liked the ideas in it)

Favorite Movie(s): Any old school kung fu, Iron Monkey (kung fu film), Most Jackie Chan films, Hero, Catch me if you Can, Orange County, Cheech and Chong: up in smoke (funniest stoner movie EVER), Shaolin Soccer, Gladiator, Donnie Darko, Starsky and Hutch (the recent one), The Royal Tenenbaums

Favorite TV show(s): Lost, 'Allo 'Allo!, Dad's Army, Diagnosis Murder

Plans for life in general: still working on that one, interested in media, teaching, archaeology and the environment. Go figure.

Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Far too many for me too write them all here! Quantic, Fila Brazilia, Banco de Gaia, buddha bar type stuff, the Levellers, James Brown and a lot of other music from the seventies, also Aphex Twin and Squarepusher.

Favorie ice cream flavor(s):Mint choc chip, raspberry ripple, mango sorbet, lemon sorbet, who am I kidding? I love all Ice cream!

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella? Nutella first by a long way then vegemite then Marmite, but I don't hate any of them really

ubblol thanks Jo! hug ubblove we miss you too! In fact I miss everyone from back home!

Anyway, time for an update! It's been freeezing here in China, not so much that's it's colder than England, but there's no central heating here! frown

Until lately I was giving poi lessons to students outside, which helped, but lately it's been rainy, which means I've been waving sticks and poi about in my study (carefully because I have a cabinet with glass panels)

So tomorrow is my last day of term because they want the students to have more grammar lessons before their exams, so my three weeks off has suddenly become more than a month! Students were very sad to hear we wouldn't be teaching them next week, but I think it'll be good for me in a way, cos they were starting to moan about the writing part of the lessons, this will remind them what things were like before!

Anyway, I hope they all get good results, they're under so much pressure, poor things!

So, now I'm trying to decide where to go, I need a few days here for r and r first but I think some travelling is in order! Karen will be coming to Guilin on the 4th and then we will go on to Guangzhou (home of dim-sum: some of the nicest food in China). Not sure if we will go to Qiyang, I wasn't going to ask her to, but today a couple of teachers were saying how they wanted to 'have a look at her'! ubblol But I only have 2 weeks with Karen and am a bit reluctant to spend too many days travelling of that!well, we'll see I guess

Also am going to try to book a hotel with a spa, so we can both relax, think that'll be good especially after the massive journey to get here for Karen!

Anyway, that's it for now!

ubbidea I don't know if I want to be looked at! LOL Very odd!

Have to say that 2007 so far hasn't been the most chilled year so I am def looking forward to gorging on Dim Sum and getting away from it all. meditate

Have decided that ignorance is bliss and will probably not ask what I am eating! As long as it doesn't look too much like the animal I think i'll live. confused

I woke up to snow this morning. Its funny how you still get that excited feeling at whatever age. Is it snowing in China or are you too far south? angelblue

Anyways, have my visa, have Guy's most wanted shopping list (no chance of me bringing anymore than clean pants with the list i've been given ubbtickled) - and am now very, very very very excited! ubbrollsmile ubblol bounce2 bounce bounce2 bounce bounce2 bounce hehe sunny sunny smile

so it looks like I'll be back in June for certain now. Chinese New Year has been a blast (literally) with loads of bangers and rockets going off. Tonight I went out to a hill in the school to watch the fireworks going off over Qiyang (which were going on non-stop for a good few hours).

While in Yanshuo for Chinese NYE I got to witness what nutters the chinese are about their fireworks: In a small street we were first treated to several meters of bangers going off, before they lit a table full of fireworks (mostly rocket stuff). We also got to hold sticks that shot out about 10 mini rockets one after the other, and saw fire works that spun about on the ground, spitting out sparks (no really, they're meant to do that!)

Luckily Karen was able to stay for NYE, although there was a certain amount of confusion over her departure date that ended in a trip to the airport for her (I'll let her explain that though)

Have had an awesome holiday, going out every night, spinning poi, (spun fire the last few nights in Yangshuo), dancing and generally larking about until 2am-4am

Anyway school starts in a few days, so I have to get my work head back on *sigh*. At least the weather has warmed up though, lately it's been like the British summer, so no more thermal underwear: Yay!

Hey Jon, you going to PLAY? because I'm going to do my very best to make it there....

If you're thinking about going to China, you could do worse than getting a teaching job out there... of course it depends how long you want to spend out here... but English money will get you a long way...

I should add I spent about 2 months wages on travel, hotels and shopping this holiday, but that included going to some pretty expensive places. BTW, don't go to Shenzhen if you can avoid it, it's only good for shopping, there's too many people, and crime is a problem in the suburbs there (as I found out when my mobile got stolen frown )

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! grouphug

weavesmiley Check! we had lovely warm weather , so spent a couple of hours outside playing with sticks and poi

beerchug Check! Just got back from a night out with the teachers: the toasts were flying thick and fast: it's a chinese custom to toast everyone around the table in turn, plus any other toasts you might feel like, and I had people coming through from another room to toast me (there were that many people there, we took up two rooms and three large tables). Alas I was only drinking sprite (due to my alcohol problem: the problem is I can't drink it) but the spirit was there!

ubbloco Check! that would be the karaoke bar we went to, where I and Emily (my co-worker, and the only other English person in town) were attempting to sing songs that we didn't know terribly well (due to the poor selection of English songs available in our town), some of which were simply music videos without any lyrics! eek anyway, they seemed to appreciate our effort on 'You take my breath away', even though there was a bit in the middle where we completely lost the tune, and the video to go with it mainly consisted of the scenes where Tom Cruise and the woman in Top Gun are shoving their tongues down each other's throats (a departure from the healthy scenes of people walking/plowing/ looking out of windows that seems to be the norm for most chinese songs).

peace Check! Me now, listening to clasical guitar music, wholly glad I don't have to sing along, and checking up on my birthday wishes!

I think this is only the first or second birthday I've spent not in the country, so I'm looking forward to the excuse to see all you guys for a party and a hug2

I should just add, some of the highlights today included:

one of my classes singing 'happy birthday' when I walked in to teach them and they had written 'happy birthday' on the board with hearts and stuff around it

getting a three tier birthday cake: Interestingly the chinese bakers put cream on the outside rather than icing, meaning they are extremely messy to eat. Also not helped by the fact that one of the teachers shoved the cake in my face when she gave it to me!

Happy Birthday sweetheart!

Wow - a three tiered birthday cake! That's amazing! I hope you took a pic before it ended up in your face.

We will hold a Ma-hou-sive welcome back party on return. I guarantee there will be no karaoke - although we all know Simon has a habit of bursting into song - but thats more acapella!

You've been in my thoughts all day. I hope you really enjoyed your birthday and I hope you have a fantastic 2*cough* year!

I love you! bounce2 kiss ubblove ubbrollsmile hug hug hug kiss ubblove hug hug bounce bounce bounce2 heart grouphug

Have been brewing a cold for the past three days, meaning constant headaches and stressedness.... grrrr... frown

On the up side, today I saw an amazing performance at the school by an entirely disabled performance troupe. We had 30year olds the size of children doing dancing and singing, one legged acrobats, a man doing calligraphy with no arms and the amazing 'thousand hand dance', in which all of the performers are deaf! As a backdrop, they had a big sign, saying 'I can do it' in chinese. Very inspiring, and good to see people spreading a message of hope in this country smile

This is a video of the thousand hand dance:
