Hey there everybody!
I'm a student at London uni and I live in Cambridge during my holidays. I don't drink cos of epilepsy but I do smoke (though I'm trying to cut down on that). I like all sorts of music but not country or manufactured pop. I love drum and bass, funk and chill, and I love my poi!
I first saw fire poi this year when I went to a party after my final exams at uni. There was live Drum and Bass being played on the roof of this house, and some people doing fire poi. I thought, 'I gotta get me some of those..' and despite remembering only about 5 names out of a possible 50 from the party, I remembered the poi!
Anyways, a little over two months ago I started using some comet poi, got addicted, and basically have been practising for about an hour a day since then. About a month ago I bought monkey fist fire poi, and practised with them to get used to the weight and feel of chains. Then a little over a week ago... FIRST BURN!! was a little timid at first, but then did wraps constantly when burning and blackened up my hoody and jeans until i wasn't worried about the flames anymore, now I feel free to revel in my pyromania! I LOVE POI!!

Edit: now updated to include basic info

Name: Guy

Location: Cambridge

Hometown: Born in Boston (the UK one!) moved to cambridge 5 years later

DOB:27/3/81

Age: 24

Sex:Male

Occupation(s):unemployed but soon to be a student yet again

Favorite Food(s): Chinese (especially Dim Sum), anything sweet, anything chocolate, mild curries, mushrooms with blue cheese

Favorite Color(s): Not sure really but I seem to wear blue a lot, and i like to have red colours in my room

Toys: poi, staff, nunchuks, flag on a pole (wielded sword style), rope dart, cj ball

Hobbies other than the obvious: shoddy guitar playing (and singing songs about pot when no-ones about), experimental cooking (very occasionally), reading, drawing on my hand on long journeys, listening to music all the time, worrying about the environment, playing compulsive computer games, photography (occassionally), watching Kung fu films (especially the badly dubbed old ones) and skinning up.

Education: BA Ancient World Studies 2:1, waiting for my MA in Public Archaeology marks, about to start a TEFL course hopefully

Favorite Book(s): Dark Materials trilogy (Philip Pullman), Armageddon the musical trilogy (Robert Rankin), Dear Monkey (abr. Alison Waley), the Dark is Rising books, Satanic Verses (although I've only managed to read it once I really liked the ideas in it)

Favorite Movie(s): Any old school kung fu, Iron Monkey (kung fu film), Most Jackie Chan films, Hero, Catch me if you Can, Orange County, Cheech and Chong: up in smoke (funniest stoner movie EVER), Shaolin Soccer, Gladiator, Donnie Darko, Starsky and Hutch (the recent one), The Royal Tenenbaums

Favorite TV show(s): Lost, 'Allo 'Allo!, Dad's Army, Diagnosis Murder

Plans for life in general: still working on that one, interested in media, teaching, archaeology and the environment. Go figure.

Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Far too many for me too write them all here! Quantic, Fila Brazilia, Banco de Gaia, buddha bar type stuff, the Levellers, James Brown and a lot of other music from the seventies, also Aphex Twin and Squarepusher.

Favorie ice cream flavor(s):Mint choc chip, raspberry ripple, mango sorbet, lemon sorbet, who am I kidding? I love all Ice cream!

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella? Nutella first by a long way then vegemite then Marmite, but I don't hate any of them really

so it's all decided, I've got a contract to teach in Anyang in the Shaanxi province of China, from 5 October til 30 January! Can't believe I'm actually going to go! Anyway, I'm planning to take the 'Sphercular vision' and 'scales of poi' DVDs with me to keep me going.

Apparently the accomodation they give me should have internet access, so I should be able to stay in touch..

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know that Guy's mum just called and he has arrived safe and well in China - though perhaps a bit tired!!!! I'm sure he will update us all on his progress once his figured out the Chinese lettering on the keyboard!

Check out Vampyricacids gallery for fab pics of his last night. Thanks all for coming.

Guy - Have a fab time. I miss you already and love you lots. No one would sit next to me on the crowded tube on the way back from Heathrow cos I was such a blubbery banana! Teehee!
Take care baby!

I'm sitting in the school now, and as I look out of the window, there are mini-mountains covered in vegetation. Have to go and buy rice and balloons to make poi with soon! The weather is very humid and warm here, but I have a fan and A/C in my room. Was an interesting journey as Shanghai airport was the MOST confusing airport I've ever been to, and they didn't say where to collect my bags from initially, leading me to think I might be spending the next few weeks with only one set of clothes eek

haven't explored the twon yet, but apparently there are lots of brothels, called 'pink-light hairdressers'. Just hope they have a general store!

Lessons start for me tomorrow!

I have poi now, made out of tourist tat! biggrin I also have a keyboard with no letters on it.

They're building a place that says it will offer poi classes eek I want to change jobs! wink

Interesting experiences now include: peeing in chinese urinals: they look like western ones but the pee actually goes straight onto the floor. Luckily I noticed a channel in the floor and was immediately suspicious! eek

eating pig's aesophagus on a skewer: I won't even describe some of the stuff I passed on.

being surrounded by fantastic mountains

learning the 5 second rule does not apply here (see the first thing)

haggling with people over about 7 pence difference: you have to haggle for almost EVERYTHING here!

worst of all, slowest internet connection sometimes: ever! and no videos! frown

grouphug and kiss to you all!

I'm ok, went to an amazing place called 'butterfly spring' yesterday which had a bloody great butterfly over the entrance, very picturesque though!

Poi seems to be very interesting for the students, A couple have shown interest in learning, they say it looks like Tai Chi to them! Have learnt a Chinese dice drinking game and am trying to learn Chinese chequers.

Should be heading to the new school tomorrow eek

Wow!!! That sounds really beautiful.

It wasn't a real butterfly stuck over the entrance was it? I'm glad that people seem interested by poi and not freaked out - have to admit I was a bit scared that it might be considered subvertive or something!

Is your new school near to where you are now? What did your fellow dice-players think of you not drinking?

Missing you so much! Have discovered a few net cafes in Colchester so I can e-mail you a bit more fully!

Have settled in a bit to the new school now, my appartment is pretty decent, and by Chinese standards it's positively luxurious! have my own TV, DVD player, kitchen, Air con, fan balcony, bathroom, and washing machine! Sink's a little leaky and the washing machine outflow floods the bathroom each time I use it, but that's China! Still, I should be getrting a computer with internet access soon installed in my flat, so then I can stay in touch a bit more! As soon as I do, I'll post some pics for you all!

Have eaten a mixture of things lately some horrible, some delicious. When we arrived there was a welcome ceremony and I had to make a speech to about 2000 students, which was pretty wierd!

China is very different, people spit *everywhere* , having dinner means out means you have to make lots of toasts to the people around your table, and people stare a lot.

anyway, I'll leave it at that for now apart from to leave hug hug kiss kiss ubblove ubblove hug2 hug2 for you all!
