I think I've passed it on a car journey out of Wiltshire. I'd like to visit them all, as I used to live below this one:

I'll be moving to Salisbury in September so any Wiltshire spinners down that way, or Dorset ones for that matter (only it would then be up that way) want to arrange a regular meet I'm in.

I just read about this in the london metro and thought you all should know:

Lichen discolours ancient horse (!!!) eek

One of Wiltshire's famous white horses has become so discoloured there are calls for it to be cleaned up.
Despite recent measures to remove lichen growing on the ancient landmark - a major tourist attraction in Westbury - it is still looking grey.

Whitening the monument is not a simple procedure as it is a protected site and chemicals can not be used to clean it.

English Heritage says it is looking into how to stop the greying but needs to wait until the weather is better.

Westbury's horse is the oldest in Wiltshire. It was restored in 1778, but many believe it is far older than that.

It is thought to have been carved in 878 AD to commemorate King Alfred's victory over the Danes at the Battle of Ethandune.

Yeah - happens every few years frown

I spent most of my childhood in Westbury and I never once thought I'd hear the history I was so fascinated in and proud of, mentioned here. I love that horse and the hill it's carved onto and miss them very much redface smile

Duballstar: thank you. You've made my day ubbrollsmile
