Hello everybody,

This is my first time actually posting anything on this message board....I'm kinda shy about talking to people via computer. Anyway, here goes my introduction....

Name: Melanie

Age: 27

Location: Vermont, USA (but I'm Canadian)

Favorite Toys: fire chains, fire cables, poi, juggling balls

Been Twirling For: 8 years (on and off)

Occupation: Student, herbalist, fire performer

Hobbies: fire twirling, live music, making herbal products

Music: Varies drastically....I think I like a little of everything, especially if it has soul

Movies: Dreams, The Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Lord of the Rings

Books: Way too many to list

Favorite Colour: Wine Red

So, I first learned how to spin poi when I was travelling through New Zealand in 1996. There were all these circus folks spinning in a park in Christchurch, and I knew that I had found my people. Since then, I've been pretty addicted to spinning (although I do tend to take long breaks). Last year I sent a promo video to the COL4 video compilation. It was somewhat outdated - I had made it a year and a half earlier, but we had so much fun doing it, which is what really matters. Except, I'm not from Belgium (which is what my intro says), I'm actually from Canada. Anyway, the reason that I finally decided to join this message board is that I recently got an amazing opportunity to go to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. It was one of those weird twists of fate, but I met a woman from a theatre company who offered me an all-expense paid trip to Scotland to spin fire with her troupe for 3 weeks. And on top of it, my boyfriend gets to come along and run the sound for their play. So, I was hoping to meet up with some other fire spinners while I'm there (August 1st to the 23rd). I'd also love to hear any tips about visiting Scotland.

Thanks,

Melanie

I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

hey everybody, thanks so much for making me feel so welcome!

Pink - I'm actually flying into London and then taking a train to edinburgh from there. I'd love to hang around London for a few days, but I'm not sure if it'll be possible - the whole currency conversion is pretty brutal for us (1 pound = 1/2 dollar!). Plus, we're on a bit of a schedule with the whole Fringe thing. How far is Edinburgh from London anyway?

Puk - thanks for the tip, I'll send an e-mail

Pounce - I wish I could watch COL4 again, I only saw it once because I don't have vhs. And there were so many awsomne performers on it to learn from. By the way, thanks for being the first person to respond to my message.

I only get a chance to check this every few days, so sorry if my replies are slow... I'm so glad to meet all of you.

Um Edinburgh is quite far... it's way up north.
I'm sure some people would be able to put you up for a night or two, you are most welcome at mine, but i do live quite far outside London (hour and half journey away).

Yeah, so I figured out that Edinburgh is about a 8-10 hour train ride from London. (I'm kinda bad with geography...)

I studied at the California School of Herbal Studies in Forestville, California for a year, and then at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in Bisbee, Arizona for another year. Bisbee is a crazy little town (in a good way). I'm now in my 3rd year of BSn in Alternative Medicine.

I am so very excited to go to the Fringe festival! weavesmiley
