Posted:After much consultations with the gods of POI, it has been discovered the word 'poi' is correctly pronounced with a silent 'i'. hence the correct pronunciation is much closer to 'po(h)'

I trust you will all amend your vocabularies asap.

Posted:Know this one is gonna be though....BUT......what about giving the art a whole new name? Out of respect for the old masters and they're traditions...where poi means something other than playing in the park.....
I know the basics of the art's story and I'm not saying that we should forget where it came from but the new modern art of poi that we are playing with is evolving in a different direction than the traditional poi are.....so maybe the poi we are exploring should have it's own name
A new name could be voted for here at HOP maybe....
Know this is highly sensitive stuff but I suggest it anyway cause I think it's worth giving some thought.....Why?....Maouries call it tradition.....we call it play / hobby / work / meditation and on and on and on.....
There is a big difference so it would be out of respect If we changed the name......

Posted:POI is a word that exsists in many languages with many definitions, so saying which is semantically correct is moot. I posted the same thing when I found out that the term Stave is correct for what people have been calling staff(s).

Looking at this culturally, what we do is based on many art forms, not just one, and so, if this is not the correct word pronunciation then it simply is adding to the fact that we have created a new art, which many of the cultural purists would be more comfortable with anyway.

And yet, there is still no clear cut answer. In the Maori pronunciation guide I have, it says similar to boy and toy...poy.

I know that people I have known from Hawaii say it this way as well, though regarding the food.
One of the European nomadic cultures does pronounce the word as POH but it takes on a different meaning.

And in one of the asian cultures (forget which one) it is a slang word pronounced POO-EE, and it is inappropriate for me to say what it means here.

Linguistic origins are fascinating, and I love that this was posted here truly. But to say that we should change pronounciation based on any single cultural difference seems a bit pointless, when we are really creating a global subculture.

I also have to add, that I have heard people try to read the word come up with interesting terms. And others who just can't seem to remember the term poi call them something fully different (my favorite is an "older" student of mine..in her 50's..calls them bangers! ).

Thanks for sharing!

Posted:Fair point BlackFireJack quote:what about giving the art a whole new name? Out of respect for the old masters and they're traditions...where poi means something other than playing in the parkWot, like fire-chains for example? After reading the The Rhythm and Life of Poi book by Ngamoni Huata, it seems that poi is a way of life as much as anything else, so I dont see any contradiction there. And as Pele says what we do is based on many art forms. I personally see much similarity with old skool club swinging, which originated in India.

Incidentally, Ive also heard poi called poi-poi, but Im not sure why its doubled.

Posted:Was more expressing a good point than a name-changing mission....
The reason I wrote it is that when I was in New Zealand I had a 'hard' (moderately ) time explaining why i was spinning and I felt like I was intruding their culture and modernising it to a play.....They take it serious down there.....
Whenever NZ is represented you'll see male maouries doing a 'hakka' (sorry if I'm wrong about the word) and women doing poi...
And there I come along from Norway and spinn the modern way.....
..........Didnt feel like I wasnt accepted but more like they didnt know where they had me like......" what is that guy up to ? " sort of................
Hard to explain cause it all happened with looks and bodylanguage....
It's like if someone came to Norway and started practising something from our culture ....we would just be standing there going 'What???'
probably tell him to stop and leave our culture alone............
Wouldnt know what but maybe axe-throwing , sword figting, going berserk or some other nice exercises from out glourious past

I just had a somthing on my mind ...thats all.-....Let's call it what it is and still show our respect.....
Poi it is

- I think the term "Poi-Poi" as a plural has been discussed before, and am fairly certain Pele knows the answer
