Hullo. This is kinda odd, last forum I joined I knew most of the people on it, here I don't know anyone. Hopefully that won't last though! Anyway, here's me (sort of).

Name: Kat
Age:27, so theoretically old enough to know better, but it doesn't seem to be working!
Occupation: Teacher (blech! frown)
Location: Edinburgh
Hobbies: costuming, tapestry, sword fighting, lots of other stuff, and now staff spinning too!
First time spinning: Firestaff at about 3am in a field at the re-enactmant of the Battle of Bannockburn last September. Been hooked ever since, and my lovely fiance bought me a firestaff (and a balloon animal blowing kit!) for Christmas, isn't he nice?! Haven't lit it yet though, thought it might be good to stop hitting myself with it first.

Can't think of anything else right now, it's Monday morning and my brain has melted. Need more sleep.

Anyway, hello and hugs to all you nice people.

Hahaha! I know how you feel about your thread wink Mine's the same... Don't worry, I'll post in yours from time to time!

Fruit leather? What's that? Seems like you had a great little shopping spree!

I've been down to Cambridge to see some friends and ended up kissing my ex-boyfriend. If you can think of any way that I can make money by using my talent of getting myself into trouble let me know! rolleyes

Back now. Motorways in snow are not much fun.

Fruit leather = fruit, pureed, sometimes spices added, spread thinly and somehow dried out so it resembles leather. Sounds odd, but is very nice. I'll save you some if you like.

Dunno 'bout making money, but pretending (or more often simply being) drunkenness seemed to work most of the time as a method of getting out of said trouble. Not always, but often enough to be a fair tactic. Of course the drunkenness was usually the reason I was IN the trouble in the first place, so perhaps not such a good idea. Hmmm. Am reformed character (well mostly), honest. ubbangel ubblol

Must go sleep. Just in case hopes are dashed and school is not closed tomorrow. Not that I can complain having just missed 3 days.

grouphug and an extra hug for Birgit for getting herself in trouble!

Oooh yes please save some for me, that sounds yummy!

Nah, pretending drunkenness won't help me with this one, but the fact that he's a couple of hundred miles away and currently ignoring me might wink

Did your school close today?

Nope, it didn't. Boo frown

Didn't even close on Wednesday despite blizzard conditions and only about 200 kids making it in. Although I wasn't here on Wednesday anyway!

Fruit leather shall be saved. Will probably order more at some point anyway, 'cos it's good. biggrin

Snowing again!! And school still open (Boo!) Snowy trees very pretty in West Lothian though.

This country is mad. 2 inches of snow and everyone crashes and roads come to a standstill. rolleyes

Anyone know if there's any snow left in Edinburgh? Was all falling off trees in the meadows when I drove through this morning.

OOOO! I got new toys on Friday. (Yay!) But I have no time to play with them. (Boo!) But it's the Easter holidays in 2 weeks (YAAAAAAAAAY!!)

I hate this time of year!!

Bursting into tears at departmental meetings is not good, but at least your boss is more likely to sort things out for you. Having said that, I don't plan on doing it again, it was not fun.

Not that I'm pleased about this or anything of course ubbangel

And the best bit is it means I can go to the Meadows on Monday night. Woohoo!

Things I must do in the next 2 weeks:

go to the gym at least every other day
get bridesmaids dresses made
practice staff for at least an hour every day
get the rest of the invitations made
rack all the demijohns
tidy the flat (especially since Strugz and Dunc are coming to stay for uberstaff!)
not pig out on chocolate/biscuits/toast/crisps etc
make a start on authenty kit for the summer

and if possible buy a 4*4 (so as to be able to fit kit in it, and not have to push it out of horribly muddy fields this summer)

No, I don't think I'm going to manage it all either. Especialy if it's sunny (except the staff bit biggrin)

Ooo. 11 minutes now!

Hey Kat,

I just re-stumbled into this thread and have been overwhelmed by guilt. I remember posting in it (ages ago- you even addressed me by the first nick I used here) but clearly didn't follow up, and I should have, really, considering how close to me the issue you brought up is.

My grandmother has been suffering from severe asthma for quite a while now, and in the past couple of years, she's taken onboard arthritis and dementia as well. If she's not being trolleyed off to the hospital for an asthma attack, she's waking up in the early hours wailing in pain because the arthritis canes her finger joints. On top of that, she's lost a couple of 'friends' because they think that she's being proud pretending not to recognise them bumping into them on the street (well, if it makes them feel any better, I could have a conversation with her and every 20 seconds I have to tell her where in the world I am and what I'm doing there).

It makes me extremely upset because if anyone in the world were to deserve such a cruel fate, it's not my grandmother. I've never really gotten along with my mum, and throughout my childhood, my grandmother's been a constant source of affection, reassurance and encouragement. It was sort of having a safe place, and having someone else there too.

These days she's getting older (going to hit 80 soon), and she seems trapped in some kind of memory loop. She remembers who I am only when I remind her, and after that she'll dispense the same advice she gave me for the first time years ago- don't mix with 'bad' people, study hard, don't take let negative things people say affect you, and tolerate my mother.

We can't have much new discussion because her short term memory's gone, and everytime we talk, I pretend as if it's the first time we've had the conversation. Sometimes she'll acknowledge her senility and she just looks heartbroken because there's nothing she can do about it, and people treat her differently (some people don't take it very well) because of it.

Anyway, she tries to maintain her small garden to pass the days, and while it's mostly overgrown and not something you'd ever see in a magazine, I can't help but think of all the conversations she's had with it.

She's extremely lucky too, because my grandfather is more devoted to her than ever. Running marathons is his number one passion, and he'shad to cut down severely to take care of grandmother.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for what you and your grandmother had to go through when I read your outpour. But I know how her not being confused or able to feel pain anymore must seem like some kind of other-side-of-the-coin. From time to time, my grandmother tells me it'd be better if she died, and while it really saddens me, I can't really do anything but tell her to stop being silly.

So anyway. Sorry again about not getting back to you earlier- I feel terrible, I really do.

I hope you're feeling better these days (from your last post, it seems like things are getting back on track?) smile Enjoy your holidays hug hug hug

Hey Kat!!! I'll see you tonight on the Meadows if the weather doesn't scare you off! Have told some of the firepoints that we'll have a guest so they'll hopefully behave.
Have decided to name the penguin Pogo. He seemed fairly bouncy last time I put him on wink

It did. It was cold and wet and yucky, so I stayed at home and did random things, maybe next week. I think Pogo is a very good name for a penguin, the ones we saw at the zoo last Friday were definately bouncy!
Holiday resolutions are not going well. Although my friend Sarah came over yesterday and cleaned my bathroom. She asked to, odd girl sometimes but she's lovely.

Ry, sorry for my late reply and please don't feel bad about not writing earlier - I'm really touched that you did at all! I'm really sorry to hear about your grandmother, but so glad that she still has you, your grandfather and her garden. Please feel free to pm me if you'd ever like someone to talk to about your gran, or anything else. hug

My gran loved gardening too, so it was really lovely that the person who has bought her house is keeping the garden going, and brought flowers she had picked from the garden to the funeral. Gran would have been very pleased. As funerals go, her funeral was really good. My dad and uncles wanted to focus on all the many good things about her, so the hymns were cheerful ones and the minister spoke about all the good and funny things she'd done. It really helped and reminded me that she wouldn't want us to be sad.
I've found out that she left me some money in her will and I've decided that I'm going to use some of it to buy beekeeping equipment. I spoke to my dad about it and he thinks its a good idea and that Gran would approve, maybe she knows and is smiling. I like to think so anyway.
