Okies, for anyone who is interested, the beginnings of my aforementioned dissertation prep.rolleyes

How did I arrived at the topic?

Illustration is a language, it endeavours to communicate, teach, describe, inform, publicise, reveal, comment and decorate.

A major part of our lives is dominated by the visual world, we are bombarded with images, and many are exaggerated tenfold with accompanying sound and movement. It is almost unavoidable for most in the developed world today.

My personal way of thinking, predominantly arrives in my head in a visual form, in pictures. I often feel the urge to record, translate and manifest these thoughts of visual data, information and/or knowledge in the raw form of mark making.

I feel that every mark made by any part of our body, with any type of tool, with any medium is a part of our soul. It reveals our opinions, our thoughts our feelings and emotions, even when we are not consciously striving to make a comment.

I enjoy thinking about the blurring or “words”, “pictures/images”, “letters”, “symbols” and “signs”. I am also fascinated with how language is forged in visual forms, whereby a presence of written language exists along side “picture language”. The use of simple symbols can be understood by most, whatever language, whatever culture, and whatever age or class, and understand the message.

I aim to study an important turning point in international visual communication, and have decided to focus on the introduction of ISOTYPE. I would like to discuss the importance of this new form of teaching/informing, how it arose and how it is still present in today’s contemporary society. I aim to research the era that co-existed along side the avant-garde movement.

Hmm this is my current title but its changed about ten times already, so its likely to change again redface
