Favorite Book(s): Imajica by Clive Barker
Favorite Movie(s): Far too many to list, but most sci fi, and some really bad sci fi.
Godzilla vs. a Star Wars Star Destroyer. Who wins? Why? Star Wars, because they've got a better effects budget.
Favorite TV show(s): Mental, Chopped, Taboo, tons of documentaries, most of the Food Network nighttime lineup.
Plans for life in general: (i.e. what you want to do when you grow up) I don't plan on growing up.
Favorite Music Artists/Composers: I don't really have favorites.
Do you think these pants make my butt look too big? Try standing at 3/4 view, it makes your butt look smaller.

Ok now that that's done, I'm a total noob who has had a long-time fascination with poi and other forms of fire manipulation, but never had the means to access any kind of teaching on it. I'm hoping to start practice on my own, but wouldn't dare progress further without some kind of training for it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hiya! Welcome to HoP!
I'm sure there'll be a few people around who do poi in your area, but in the meantime, have you tried the lessons on here (learn tab up top)?
Just remember to learn without fire to start off with
y'can add that later when you're a bit more confident about what you're doing. Have a rummage round the 'Meet Others' forum, and try the tab up top of the same name, as well as the 'Events, Performances and Gatherings' forum- going to festivals and meeting spinners is generally a good way to meet people who can teach you new skills.
Most importantly, have fun!

the lessons here are great, but theres no substitute for someone showing you in person. although once you get the basics down you'll have loads of fun experimenting yourself!
i dont know how hard it would be to learn just from video...like to start off learning from video - i had someone teaching me to start me off, but i find i can learn new stuff quite well from video. id be interested to see - let me know how you get on.
