Hey people, thought I'd knock this one out with as much information as I feel happy giving, seeing as I don't know you lot yet!

Name: Jon Ireson

Location: Jersey, Channel Islands, United Kingdom

Hometown: Jersey

DOB: 13/08/1982

Age: 24 (25 next month - eep!)

Sex: Male

Occupation(s): Currently in IT and hating it, just accepted a post as an EMT. Also motorbike instructor on the side

Favorite Food(s): Most things Italian

Favorite Color(s): Never been bothered

Toys: Motorbike, RC dirt buggy, poi, fireworks, mountain bike, most things adrenaline related!

Hobbies other than the obvious: Mountain biking, riding my motorbike (like to take it away to Europe etc), I work with one of the fireworks companies over here blowing things up when given the chance, all sorts really, just finding time to fit it all in!

Education: Yes! Reasonably well educated - college level

Favorite Book(s): Not a big book worm, but enjoy things that make me chuckle. Currently reading "Is it just me or is everything [censored]?"

Favorite Movie(s): Usual Suspects, Mallrats, too many more to list

Favorite TV show(s): Scrubs, Family Guy, Green Wing, lots more, but it's late and I can't think

Plans for life in general: Growing old is mandatory, growing old isn't. So I plan on staying quite silly!

Favorite Music Artists/Composers: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Velvet Revolver, Metallica (old stuff), Incubus, generally rock/metal/funk type things

Favorie ice cream flavor(s): Depends what mood I'm in

Marmite, Vegemite, or Nutella? Love Marmite, and quite like Nutella. Never seen the point in Vegemite, plus it's nigh on impossible to get over here from what I'm told!

Anyway, hope that provides some form of insight. Well done for reading it biggrin

I have several large jars of the stuff. I actually like it... a little. And don't tell anyone I admitted to it.

Uchi as in a Japanese term for "strike" originally. But I kinda liked how it sounded!

As for this army malarky... what the...!?!?!??!??!?!?!?!!??

I don't see any propaganda so I can't join up just yet! Do we get a ticker tape parade!?!?

Gotta say, this is friendlier than the last forum I joined (and subsequently got bored of, as it was poop!)

sorry to hear your last forum was boring hug

"uchi" means "strike" as in, "to strike" or "strike" like workers protesting?? cos the only meaning I have is "house", "family" and things along that train for thought frown

"utsu" means "to strike"...

This may sound really basic in research, but when I was looking for information on Aikido I came across a lot in Wikipedia, and it was on there - have a look!

ai-uchi means "mutual kill/strike" and it says "many of the strikes (uchi) in Aikido..."

So I thought I was fairly well based on that one, but you know the internet!! As for being bored - it was due to it being a herpetology forum (I keep snakes) and everyone was just a biiiiit too geeky to be honest!!!!! "Where's the fun?" Not there haha!

I've got nothing for "ai-uchi" but "uchi-ai" would come under that definition. where "ai" means that it's something done together, in a meeting situation, and "uchi" is gunfire. so if you switch the kanji around a bit then you can get what you've got wink

...and i'm trying to claim that i'm still too sick to do any uni work ubblol

Okay whaaaaaaaaaat!?

Somebody's up on their kanji!! I bet you have a great laugh when someone says "See this? It mean's 'mother' in Kanji" and you know it really means "#23 Special Fried Rice" bwahahhahahahahaaaaaa!!

At least my tattooist is from Thailand and can do translations. But still, you gotta trust he's translating it to "idiot customer" wink

I'm off sick at the moment too. Many years too late, I got appendicitis the other week and had to have it removed. So i'm currently sporting a lovely new scar (it's very neat!) and a load of regrowth. Damn them!

Leads me onto why I started Poi spinning... I was enthralled a few years ago when I went to see some friends in London and someone did some fire poi. bought some of my own (material ones and some fire ones for "later") as we don't have anywhere on this poxy island that sells poi and i'd never seen them before.

They lay dormant for YEARS and someone got me some LED poi at christmas... just moved somewhere with a garden (hooray!) and decided the other day that i was fed up of being sat round doing nothing as i'm not allowed to drive or ride and got the poi out. voila, FUN! i'm hooked wink

Nope, that's right! I can't ride my motorbike, or drive a car until Monday at the earliest.

Thing is, I had loads of lessons over the last few weekends and evenings, so I've lost out on £325 (757aussie $!) of pay from the bike school!!!! *sob* damnit. that's just not fair. i'm liking the time off work, but i'm NOT liking the "caged animal" feeling, as i can't really GO anywhere!

How do you know all the kanji stuff btw?

There's one other guy on here (i ju;st did a search) from Jersey (it' tiny! 9 miles x 5 miles) so i may drop him a line!

Hahaha! I'm not on pills now - but the ones in the hospital weren't too bad!

I'm told I can't ride/drive because if i were to need to do an emergency stop, i may not be able to, therefore invalidating my insurance. Not good haha! So yeah, I can't wait to get my independance back!

Japansese studies? groovy. uni?

insurance position! sounds unpleasant indeed!!

i do japanese at uni, but i've done it since primary school. i technically just do japanese language (i've done enough language units than i can avoid the culture ones. which is good cos most of the ones they have on offer are business and economic ones...booooring!) and i plan to get my interpreting and translating qualifications in the next 2-3 years smile

oh my real japanese is still shocking. it's a big problem with foreign language learning over here. we learn too much textbook language and not enough of the real thing.

i got my wisdom teeth out last week so i've been doped up on painkillers! fortunately(?) i ran out so i'm in pain, but at least i can stand up! ubblol

So how did you get started on Poi? I suppose I should be asking things about Poi. Or tanks. Or armies. Either way....!!!

I first picked up poi (the traditional kind) when i went to New Zealand with school in grade 6. Then I saw some poi (the kind people on this site use) in a market a few years later and had a play, but didn't buy. I finally bought poi a year after that! ubblol

now tanks, well...tanks started when i started my army....and i started my army when I asked a boy out and he turned me down*. so i got upset, declared myself general and started an army! ubblol

*he came to his senses a few weeks later and asked me out and we're still together ubblove

Aww bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel slightly sick, and I can't blame it on the meds hehehe!!

It's beautiful weather outside, and I feel I should be outside swinging things around. But I feel lazy today!

Question - how soon to start using my fire poi? I know everything seems to say "don't rush" but I love fire, always have done, and work with it a lot (fireworks, fire safety officer for work) so i'm just itching to play. \Gonna restrain myself though I think... if i can hold off buying fuel then I can not tempt myself too much!

how long? it depends. How comfortable are you with your poi? how offen do you hit yourself? are you willing to get burned? i first did fire after about 2 months of practicing my staff. Like you, i always have loved fire and i was willing to get burned. If your itching to do fire then id say as soon as you arnt hitting yourself consistently go for it, especially since you have fire background.

Hmmm, interesting then. I shall try not to rush things as I said, but I'm gonna start gathering a few bits and pieces that I need, and prep the mrs - she's gonna be my safety wink

Have a fireworks display to fire tomorrow night, can't wait to make things go whizz-pop-bang biggrin

Yeah, it's great fun! I gotta admit though, the mrs was a bit freaked out when she saw me in all the protective equipment and realised quite how dangerous it was hehe!

It's only a £600 display, but it's at a private party down the road from us, so it could be a good laugh.

I always did the little home displays with my old man when i was a kid, but now with the grown up big boy displays... jesus... SO much more fun! and dangerous wink
