And yes, Glowsticks and shoelaces are, to me, considered poi
I started to learn with ribbon and glowsticks! 
If you want to learn some poi moves, I'd suggest you go to the free lessons page on this site. But if you're willing to spend money, Nick Woosley's Scales of Poi is a very detailed DVD, giving you many important notes you will need.
