i just recently got brand new poi and have had friends tell me that i need to treat my new poi by dipping them in fuel and lighting them and putting them out repeat repeat repeat......and so on is this true?????

Personaly I would not repeat it that many times. With new wicks I light them once then put them out then do it a second time give them a few spins then put them out and check them. I do this just to make sure that there are no problems with the wicks and how they are fastened. This way I feel safe and confident that there will not be any problems with the poi when spinning infront of spectators. Saying that I also always check my poi before lighting up.
If your talking about lighting the wicks then putting them out and then dipping them in your fuel before you pack up and leave there have been a few opinions on this subject some say that doing this will increase the life of your wicks and help them last longer when lit. While some say that it does not affect the wicks at all.
Personally in my experience I have never found any proof that doing this increases the life and lit life of your wicks. But its something that you have to decide on your own, if you think it makes a difference then you should do it. I think there was a thread about it somewhere. I will see if I can find it and add a link for you.
