Ok, so we have a thread dedicated to words we love and the topic came up of words we HATE.

Here are words that just make me cringe.

"eyeball"
"wifebeater" <-- a sleeveless undershirt...I wish someone would come up with a better name for it.
"plop"

This is going to sound really weird.

I usually call myself "Ms." not Miss or Mrs. So I have once or twice done the "its Ms." thing to correct people. You end up sounding like the prissiest little ____ in the world. Try saying "Ms." without pursing up your lips like you have been sucking on a lemon.

Love the concept, hate the word they chose.

Other words I hate:

slut and choo choo train (not necessarily used in the same sentence)

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

What this calls for is a special mix of psychology and extreme violence...

Actually, my own first name, "Michael" drives me crazy. I hate it. I have trouble calling other people "Michael."

Mike is fine. I like Mike. Mike is my name. I've even considered legally changing my name to "Mike" but when I need to make myself sound official, "Michael" works better. But only in writing. I grind my teeth when anyone referrs to me in speech as "Michael."

Not exactly on topic but I really hate it when people mess up phrases.

Like instead of saying "Free sheets to the wind" they say "three sheets to the wind" (really common around here)

Also when people use the word ignorant in place of the word arrogant.

The 'C' word. Rhymes with runt.

I am not a prude, and swearing does not offend me, but if someone says that word, I blush and feel ashamed for them. Something about it makes it far worse for me than th 'F' word. Or any other swear word for that matter.

Any word in a scouse, American or Yorkshire accent. Sorry to you all but it DRIVES ME NUTS!!! I live near Liverpool, lived in Sheffield and *thinks about rationale for hating the American accent*.... *Fades away*

Also the word 'Work'. Think that ones common though!

The whole "unt" word thing really bothers me. Not that word it's self but the fact that it's so hated. It means a vagina, and I don't see why it has anymore consideration then any other word. Ive heard the angle that it's disparging for women but it's perfectly acceptable for women to call men dick heads and all kinds of disparging things.

Sorry it's a stupid double standard and it pisses me off.

I think the problem is that the actual word has a harsh sound to it where as the other words that mean the same though certainly frowned upon don't get anywhere near as hard a time cause there not as violent off the tongue.

I hate the word "like". I use it myself especially when I'm uncomfortable. Usually goes at the the end of a sentence like. And no matter what you say like, it all just come out like this like, you know what I mean like. Probably only works in a (outside dublin) Irish accent.

I live in a world of infinite possibilities.

Oh, I got one, that really gets me going*, Its gross abuse-age of the english language and its spreading.

I do not dig it when people miss-use myself.
Now my grammer sucks, and my spelling to, but this one is real simple.

myself its used wrongly so much and because it seems like a lot of people use it because it sounds more sophisticated, and once you know the correct useage, "myselfers" start sounding a bit daft.
Try this:
"Myself and john are going to the park."
Arrrrg, should be:
John and I are going to the park.

If john wasn't coming you would never say:
"myself is going to the park"

So john coming doesn't change anything.

and john comes first because you always list people in the order that you think puts the most important people first, hence its considerate to always put yourself last, but I sometimes forget.

There are valid ways to use myself, and I've got no prob with them, like:
"I am going to the park all by myself."
Not to be confused with:
"I am going to clapham common to play with myself."

Myself enjoyed that rant

Drew

(* When I say really gets me going, I mean, like it makes one muscle twinge a bit and i think words like "bum" and "front bottom" but thats about as irate as I get nowdays)

I generally don't like saying certain words and I cringe when people use them. Have no idea why I just do:

High beams (GAH! Just call them brights!)
Zapper or flipper (Call it the remote, or the remote control it's more dirrect)
Telephone in use for saying cell phone. Just call it a phone or cell.

Those are the only few that I can think of. I'm also not fond of people that talk online, don't type something correctly (the constant use of U instead of you and 411 for information) or having sentences like "u wan 2 g oaut l8r thi weeek?" (Yes. I have had this typed to me and I did NOT want to correct the person typing it).

Okay. Time to get back to school,

words I dislike are:

Hate. Because it's over used and usually said when the actual word meant is dislike. It takes a whole lot of (wasted)energy to hate.

Should/shouldn't. I strongly dislike hearing anyone telling anyone they SHOULD or shouldn't anything especially when it is regarding feelings and behaviour.

Can't. When people say they can't they give their power away. I much prefer to say/hear wouldn't like to/want to.

Debs. I have a real problem with this abreviation of my name. It seems to me like a pet name for a little girl, which was fine when I was 3 but not so good now I'm 32.

In school one day we had a discussion in class about sanitization and pathogens and what not and I used the word antiseptic several times and this idiot in my class would make some smart ass comment or snicker each time. He kept saying antiseptic meant contraceptives and he was makeing fun of me for miss using the word. This guy has done a and said a lot of stupid things in the past in this class and he lies through his teeth. I was about to tear him apart and call him on every lie and dumbass thing he did but I decided to let it go and not correct him. He can go on makeing everyone think he's a complete moron which is ultimatly more harmful for him then anything I could say to him.

So yeah I hate it when people don't understand the meaning of a word.

I am not too fond of the words:

Hate- it is a very strong emotion and a very overabused word.

Vomit- It just doesn't feel right saying it.

Judgement/al- Not a happy thought, but a common practice.

No- Come on, who likes to hear that?

Don't, Won't, Can't- I really dislike hearing these from people I love especially.

Abominable- I have to say it slow so that I can actually spit the stupid thing out.

I dunno, every now and then I will say a word and realize that it feels bad to say it, it just doesn't feel natural. That is when I figure this kind of stuff out.

Hmmm.. thinking about it ...Figure is one of those words.

Snot is another one.

The word 'awful'...It's just one of those words that sounds like it's meaning. 'Rickets' is another nasty one

Separate words that turn into phrases because you day them too fast, such as:
"Jeet yet?" (Did you eat yet?)
"Gimmie" (give me)

Zsa Zsa Gabor's name

A lot of food names bug me too: Guacamole, head cheese, squash, fondue, and they all taste yucky, too

Lemme see...

Would have to be summit with the 's' sound infront of the guttural 'g' or 'ch'. Never managed to learn to pronounce that one properly.

eg 's-Gravenzande (where I used to work) and 's-Gravenhage (The Hague). Impossible.

English words...lemme think...

Escalator - can't get my tounge around that one.
Northern, when applied to me - ok, so I talk a bit different to you. I like my accent
Microsoft. Horrible word.
'This train is delayed/cancelled/find your own way home' - not one word, but a very annoying string of them.

I think I'll leave it there for now...
