Its a work computer but we dont really have an I.T. dept. as such. So when i got this thing i ran all the the spyware removers and adware removers and virus scanners i could find but im still getting some stupid pop ups from gambling sites and other annoying crap.

Can anyone recommend some freeware that might do the job?

No no no.
I loathe, despise and detest Norton.
Their software locks down and restricts what you should be allowed to do anyway.
Not to mention the stupid amount of system resources it gobbles up, thus slowing your computer and turning it to jelly.
And furthermore, its the jelly with the bits in, not the smooth variety.

I wouldn't use it, or wish it on anyone. In fact, I've fixed many problems just by uninstalling it.

"Outlook web access for company email and it wont display correctly on firefox."

So do I... but Firefox works perfectly confused

What could be the reason for that?

The reason for that is that I am totally wrong.

It doesnt display correctly, I just didnt realise, as I could do perfectly everything that I needed to.
At least it still works though. smile

Posted:Right, firstly download the program Smitrem, then Ewido trail version, then Hijackthis. All these should be able to be downloaded from download.com.

Restart your computer and boot in safe mode, run all these programs (use Ewido last), and you should be virus, spyware, malware free. Restart again and boot regulary. should work fine now.

Posted:Sounds like you've got one of the adware things that have been discussed recently in this thread.

Try searching for pcregfix in google to see if someone's come up with a way to remove their adware.

Written by: Sym from the other thread

Right click My Computer > go to manage > services and applications > services then double click messanger and change the start up type to disabled. Then stop it.

That should stop it - if it's already disabled then I guess it is a virus / spyware...

honestly.. that is your problem.

You dont need to download anything that anyone PMs you ( wink )

Follow Syms suggestion and see what happens smile

Just got my computer fixed (whole new motherboard and harddrive - don't know why they didn't just give me a new one in the first place!) and so having to install all these programs again, this was at the top, saved me doing a huge long search for them like last time my computer broke. yey!

if you run the Ad-aware program -it'll tell you the sites that the cookies/etc are coming from usually (which is where our probs with spyware are originating) -- point them to the local loopback in your hosts file which is better. (for those that dont know.. the loopback is 127.0.0.1 (and some of those spyware/adware do the same to some legit sites like mcafee.com & symantec.com --

Posted:zamirii, cookies arn't bad. The only problem people have with them is to do with privacy, not spyware or adware.

That said, changing the host file to make bad or ad redirect to the local call back is a great idea, i've done it using a big list I downloaded. I'll post it here when i'm on my PC.

Jem, as has been said here before, you shouldn't ever need to pay for anti-spyware. whatever SystemDoctor is, you don't need it. Use firefox, download adaware or spybot and a good anti-virus and you'll be fine.

Spyware on me a-go-go...

So I've tried Search and Destroy... doesnt seem to budge it, windows defender, which is apparently the latest version of windows anti spyware, but the stupid thing is still there. angry

AVG also says nout. Yet my Homepage keeps getting changed to "about:blank"... I get pop ups everywhere, new windows and an MSN type slide up thing in the right corner, plus my computer has been raped for speed frown

Oh and to add to it all, I think i part removed some of it, as an error message continually pops up now, titled "Project1" with a windows butterfly symbol next to it. The Message itself reads "Run-time error '13': Type mismatch", All I can do is click 'OK' which closes that one and up pops another error message.

I thought it would be a battle of wills, like, it would eventually go away... but noooooooo....

So, advice? Best spyware stuff? Thanks! biggrin hug
