People freak about poi for the strangest reasons.

OK, as for fire, the exposure to the fumes would likely be minimal and would be unlikely to be much risk to the fetus. Still, I'd recommend not using fire until you're not pregnant anymore just to avoid exposure to fuel.

As for spinning poi, I encourage my pregnant patients to get plenty of exercise. Poi is one form. The important thing is that you are VERY CAREFUL NOT TO FALL. Otherwise, I can think of no reason why you shouldn't be allowed to spin poi.

VERY CAREFUL NOT TO FALL

I feel like crap after spinning fire now, it feels like a hangover. I wouldnt spin fire while pregnant but would spin heaps with socks in the meantime.

Pregnancy afeected my sense of balance too.

But imagine what the foetus must see with the flames flashing and whooshing past!! Wowo!!

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

I'd avoid fire whilst pregnant and also maybe whilst breastfeeding.

Get some glow poi if you need to see some action while you're spinning. But, I agree, avoid the fumes. If you were like me any smoke/exhaust up the nose would make you vomit. Not to mention possible absorption of the fuel through your skin.

And I agree with that, avoid it while you're nursing, too. That poses more of a risk with fume inhalation because your body will not filter out quite as many this and thats as when you were pregnant.
But, who knows, you might not feel like doing anything after the baby's born for a while. Or, you might feel like running a marathon. smile I had serious back-problems after my daughter was born, still do from time to time, and for months it was hard to walk, let alone anything else. If I poid back then, I would've had to lay off of it for a good year. Eek.

*hugs* Congratulations! Good luck smile

Erm how pregnant are you? Ide say...stop spinning fire after your baby bump gets noticable. Common sense tells me that thats kinda the time pregnant woman need to start being alot more carefull anyway.

Hmm im not sure about fumes, I mean how sensative are babys in the womb anyway? Our bodys surly filter out andything bad and keep them away from the baby dont they?

If you wanna feel abit better about it switch to the cleanest fuel you can find to put your mind at ease, spin less anyway tominimize any possible exposure, and stop after a few months.

Congratulations on the baby hug

No one really knows just how much the body filters out - it filters out some things, but not everything. And everyone is different. So it's always best to err on the side of caution.

When pregnant a women's immune system drops, blood pressure goes up, headaches and sugar levels can bottom out...All sorts of stuff. the first few months are the most critical, actually - that tends to be the make or break of the entire pregnancy. You can have problems that aren't noticable when you become pregnant and cause all sorts of havok later on.

For how common and natural pregnancy is, it's a very dangerous situation to both mother and baby.

That's why most people seem to be over-worried and extremely cautious, because you really don't know what's going on.

I tend to error on the side of caution so if it were me, I'd avoid any fuel as well as fire itself 'til well after breastfeeding.

Might be a great time to start spinning flags. biggrin

I might get yelled at for this but I would definitely not let the child breathe fire until after it was born.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

Oooh NYC has a good point, flags are so pretty and wonderfull looking, you should get a really silky transparent paire (bigger the better) so you can de-stress yourself when you spin them, that might be better than fire I suppose.

There are some amazing looking flags on called flagger central and even more pictures of gay men hugging each other in hotpants lol, but hey your a woman you might like that :P, but if you dont you were warned hehe

ACtually, it's the early stages that are more critical. That's when the neural tube is forming and all the parts are coming together. By the time the mom
"shows" most of the development other than the lungs is complete and it's more a matter of growth than development.
