It hasn't happened for a good few years but the smoke alarm up my end of the house is beeping. It's a single beep that goes off every 20 or so seconds, it's really loud too.

We've tried pushing the button to test it, we can't take the top off to change the battery. We've never had to change the battery or anything and it's passed (I can't remember how long it took) so I don't really know what it is but I'm getting so frustrated frown It's right near my room

I wouldn't care as much if it was happening during the day but it's night time and I'm tired.

I'm either going to have to:

a. Move my bed to another room

b. Turn the power for the whole house off or

c. Tolerate it

I just want to go to sleep! I was looking forward to a good sleep because I've had some pretty late nights in a row and I have volunteering work tomorrow morning. ubbcrying

Im really sure when they beep like that it means they need a battery change of there is a fault with it

Of all the nights for this to happen. It has to be the one where I'd planned to go to bed early, it has to be the one Saturday in a month where I get up early to do the volunteer work with disabled kids.

I don't feel like I deserve this.

It's Friday the 13th too.

*begins to cry*

It's just so stressful

Mum has already tried opening it up and taking out the batteries but she can't get it open.

It's weird because it happened about 5 years ago and it eventually passed...so now it just decided to come when I was getting ready to go to bed. ubbcrying

And I don't want to sleep in another room because I've been staying at other people's houses because things have been on and you know how you eventually miss your own bed? Ugh... ubbcrying

99% sure it needs a battery change.

You should test your fire alarm regularly, if it's not doing it's job properly then it's useless. If you can't figure out how to change the battery and it hasn't had a new one in in the past 5 years then you may as well rip it down and buy a new one.

I don't think we've ever changed the battery and we've been in this house for almost 20 years. The noise has just passed eventually but it had to choose when I wanted to go to bed to start playing up.

And we do test it.

Ripping it out involved scary wires at the other end and possible electrocution. Mum doesn't like the idea of ripping it out. frown

It sounds like you have a smoke alarm which is powered by the mains and has a backup battery. That'd explain why the backup battery has lasted so long, because it's hardly ever used. The battery does need to be replaced thou. If you have a fire during a powercut, or your fire is started by your electrics, you'll have no smoke alram working. Of course if it's wired in you're right not to rip the unit down.

aha..

that may mean it has been wired into the mains supply of the house.

It should still have a back up battery which kicks in if there is a power cut.

It may be that this is flat.

Try reading the smoke alarm for directions on how to open it wink

Or look up the instructions for your model of smoke alarm on the planet wide information super motorway.

We don't have any directions around. It's 20 years old, surely it would have been thrown out years ago.

I moved my matress to the other end of the house. I'm just upset because I'd planned to go to bed early and I just wanted to be in my room tonight.

I do appriciate your help.

I wish we could call an electrician but it's 9.50pm

looking on the interweb is a good idea, many things that are old are still being made. My alarm system in my brand new flat is an ancient model, it's just a widely accepted rock solid solution. You may also find people's forum posts who've encountered the same problem as you.

out on interest, is the aram on a seperate circuit? have you checked your fuse box to see if it has tripped? It may be telling you it doesn't have mains power

I'm pretty sure it's on the main circuit.

Why wouldn't it have mains power?

Well, in my parent's house for instance they have their alarms on a seperate circuit, so if they want to be able to make their alarms stop saying when they have candles burning, they can take the batteries out and turn off the circuit. When the circuit is turned off and the battery in, it beeps to let them know (annoying in power cuts, but i's only 1 beep every few minutes)
