I just got into the rave scene about 8 months ago. The tough part is I moved from Canada to Taiwan to teach English 4 months ago.
So here I am in a non-English speaking country that has a budding scene, but with no local skills.
The first couple times I went to clubs, I learned that my 4 months dancing experience put me in the 99th percentile with the locals lol.

Long story short, I'll be here for almost another year, and I have some time to kill.

I saw someone at the "warehouse" in Calgary using glowsticks on a string. When I asked, she said that she just started screwing around, no instruction at all.

I however could use some, since I can't even contact her.

For practice, can I just tie some nylon string to a couple glowsticks and try what's on the "free poi lessons" videos?

Any insight would be appreciated.

*note: I did read these boards for an hour before posting

Hey there, and welcome to HoP =)
Mind you, you eill become a poi addict as soon as you take them to your hands and start learning =)
But the glowsticks are a bit too light for it, i think. you'd better make yourself sock poi.
Anyways, do your best to have fun in Taiwan =))

hey there, im a raver too, hence the name lol, ive tried poi stuf on strings, but you have to go super fast on them, i found it easier cos i had learned on my sock poi first, then transferred to my strings smile hope that helps. just have fun! make it up as you go along ^_^

I'll draw you a picture, a picture with a twist.
I'll draw it with a razor, I'll draw it on my wrist.

Ok, so glowsticks on shoestrings works, but is hard becasuse you have to be fast, right?
What loops should I make(and how), and do any of you have close-ups of your hands holding the strings?

Wow, it's tough being a newb, glad you guys are so friendly

I'm a newbie too so at the very least I can give you soemthing to relate to. I've only been spinning a short while. Get some big ol tube socks and cut a small hold in the top for two fingers - and put something like a tennis ball in each one - and wallah! practice poi.
(I say just buy a pair of fire poi and learn - it'll totally be worth it)

have fun out in taiwan! wink

really eh? I should start with socks, not showstring/glowsticks?
Wouldn't that be a little too short?
Are the two fingers supposed to be index and middle?

Try looking for girl's knee length socks. Quite sure in Taiwan you'd have no problem finding them. Also, heel-less ones are a bonus, and a top secret tip- stripy socks spin better because they are technologically superior. biggrin

I think it's good to learn the fundamentals with socks, given that they're more forgiving when you thwap yourself. Tennis balls spin faster and getting hit by them at speed is often shocking. Rice filled balloons are an option, less painful when they get ya, but they spin slower.

A note though- poi spinning and glowstringing have developed very different styles, the latter with lots of wraps etc (very showy!). Try downloading some videos and you'll see. If I had to point out 2 very different spinners, watch FluffyNapalmFairy and compare her style to KaelGotRice (might have to register with gs.c).

Enjoy wink

when you've had practice with somink heavier you might find just using your index finger helps a lot coz then u just feed a shoe lace through your glo stick hole and tie a knot, you get a lot more manouvreability and are less likely to tie your hands up ubblol weavesmiley

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.
