So here's the story, I've always been fascinated by people spinning poi, always wanted to do it since my first party. Well this New Years I was talking to this girl, we'll call her Rachel. (Hi Rachel if you're reading this) Anyways she talked with me and gave me this site and kind of got me on my way. Now I'm one of the laziest person I know until I get some motivation, so I ordered a set of poi online. and am waiting for them to get here.

Just thought I'd get to know some of you, Anyone in Eastern Canada give me a shout, maybe you could teach me a few tricks.

Oh yea... enough to break the ice.

is Quebec City in Eastern Canada? (not too good on geography... wonder why...)

Hello, i am HoP's resident polar bear poi artist!
Male polar bears (or "Boars") can weigh up to 650 kg (1,433 lb) or as little as 350kg (772 lb)
Females (sows) weigh around 150 - 250 kg (or 331 - 551 lb)

Global warming sucks - Save the polar bears and a big welcome to HoP!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! Looking forward to the many bruises that poi are going to bring.

Quebec is eastern depending on who you ask, I say is it though. I'll have to give a pass on the Bolognase but put me down for some spaghetti. And pink! who wouldn't like pink... not my favorite color to wear, but other's pull it off nicely.

Oh Sakura, the answer is a polar bear weighs enough to break the ice... but I'm a fan of yours. Good show.

So unfortunately my first day of spinning wasn't very productive. Rain and icy ground outside doesn't make for great conditions. I was having fun inside until I almost took down my celing light. OH well, supposed to be sunny weather this weekend and hopefully I'll get some practice in.

Oh no plans to give up here. I'm excited I can't wait until the festival in August around here. There's always a group of pot and staff spinners so I'm hoping that I can get a few tips from them. Until then I have the videos.

I'm saving most of my vacation for the end of August for evolve. But let me know and I might be able to catch a ride with one of my friends heading back to college.

Ok. so I've been practicing whenever I can since I got my poi. Unfortunately it's mostly been inside since it's still too cold to be outside for more than 15 minutes at a time. I've been going through the lessons until I get to #12, I think. anyways it's the weave. I can do it with one hand (both left and right) easily enough like in the video, but when I try to get them going together I always screw up. I know it's just my timing though. I can't tell from the video when to cross them over. I know the left hand should be one beat behind the right but what happens is when the left hand crosses to my right my right comes over and they get tangled on the downswing of my left. Any tips on a way to get them to stop getting crossed up?

hello and welcome

I hope i can be of some help

before you do the "3beat weave" try a "2beat" just one time and get out of that movement:

- swing your poi next to you in split time.

- when you feel comfortable with the pace of them: swing one to the other side, underneath, and cross the other hand over.

don't do it twice, just once and return to the split time spinning.

(try saying "left under right" while you do it, with the words right and left being the ques to when these hands should cross over)

do this until it goes really smoothly, then start doing the same thing, but have your other hand go over and down first with that "first hand" crossing over.

when that feels good, try altering:

-split time swing

-left under right

-split time swing

-right under left

-split time swing

etc.

after that try leaving out all the splittime swinging in the middle and let the movements flow into eachother. it might take a while but you will do it.

I can do the 2 beat weave clean foing frontwards, but when I try to put that extra under my cords get crossed and I get headaches. I've been playing at least an hour a day with them (when my roommate doesn't steal them) I think I'm getting more comfortable with them... or at least I'm not as afraid to get hit. I can do the butterfly now as well but haven't been able to the horizontal stuff because of my indoor restrictions.
Hopefully soon I'll have it down. weavesmiley

ok, another method then:

-swing poi even time
-cross arms so poi are on other side of body as well

now keep them swinging like this for a while. then take the arm that is crossed under the other back and over so that they are now crossed the other way. and do it again for a couple of times thus alternating arms. and then without pauzing.... voila!!! 3 beat weave biggrin

Boars tend to be larger than sows. A boar can weigh 500-600kg (1100-1300lbs). Sows can weight 300kg (650lbs), unless they are pregnant when they can weigh as much as a male.

The largest polar bear ever found was a gigantic boar that was 1002kg (2209lbs) and was 3.7m (12') long. If there are 25 students in a class, and each one weighs about 40 kg (88lbs), the bear would have weighed the same as the entire class!

Haha... I didn't realise my polar bear question would get so much attention.

I'll give your suggestion a try PoP, I guess I wasn't as proficient with the 2 beat weave as I thought, one way I can do it perfect (leading with my left), and then I realised I never do it leading with my right. so I'm working on that now. I'm also trying to do it spinning backwards. I think maybe I should get it down 100% before I move on to a 3 beat but I'll try the 3 beat whenever I get frustrated trying to pick up the 2bt weave in reverse.

Poi are so addictive. I'm angry with myself for not buying a pair years ago when I was first interested.

Yea, I think I realised today that I'm trying to move too fast without getting the basics down. I have a plan now, that I'm going to learn a new move every monday of the week and play with my poi the rest of the week putting that move with the rest of what I know.

I started doing that after I read this earlier today and I think it's really helping my fluididity (is that a word?) plus it has helped me come up with new ways to link moves together instad of always going back to the forward even time. I'm so glad I decided to buy fluffy poi instead of real ones to start though or I'd be a very sore little boy.

once you get the basic moves sort of down, go to the dollarstore and pick up a pair of glowsticks, and put them on the strings they come with. crack 'em, turn on some beats, and have a go. the tracers will help to prepare you a little more for the big light-up.

have fun!!

HAHA!! It worked, I've been busy lately and haven't been on much. But I got the 3 beat weave down. My poi are blacklight reactive, which works out wel lbecause I have 5 blacklights in the living room, so I just blare the tunes and play around indoors till my roomate screams at me for almost breaking stuff.

I had a great session today played around for a little over an hour by myself outside, trying to link stuff together. I hit myself a lot less, which has extended my playing time alot. Trying to think of where to go from here, any suggestions?
