So here I am again. It's been a while hasn't it. My alto sax initially got a lot of use. Funny isn't it, how a fulltime job takes away all your spare time. Haven't had any time to poi too, apart from Jugglejam on Mondays and the monthly Moonfests. And even then, it somehow seems I tend to play with the stockwhip instead of poi shrug

Another lens has been added to the stable too. A Canon EF-S 10-22 3.5-4.5.. nice and wiide. But it all boils back down to that time issue. Despite having the new lens, I seem to find I'm out taking less pictures.. the folio hasn't been updated in a while, and I'm starting to get the horrible feeling I'm stagnating. Must. Get out of this rut.

If you're my muse and reading this, inspiration needed now. hug

-Edited 14 Dec 2005-

I liken this to opening the fridge to find that jar of misc what's it, several months expired ubblol. Hey how's it going? wave

So what's new! Well.. poi's getting a bit better for one thing. Nice how after poi-ing for a while, you stop hitting yourself senseless. In fact, one might argue how after a certain point, each hit puts more sense into you.. wink Haven't gone skating or rockclimbing in a bit, but that's ok- life's full of wonderful distractions, and really, you can only do a couple at a time.

University's just wrapped up! Yep. A degree in art & visual culture, television & digital media.. Just waiting for a piece of paper at the moment (yay!). And trying to sort out how Australia will let me live here forever and ever biggrin. Have I mentioned how wonderful it is, you so ought to visit *nudge* wink Also been getting out the with photography and stuff- a couple of projects to follow up on, blue skies and puffy clouds as far as I can see.

Updates updates. [insert geek] I've updated my camera gear too.. my 20D, 17-85 4-5.6 IS and 580EX now have a 70-200 2.8L IS to play with.. soon too, riding on getting a particular gig, either a 350D and a 24-105 f4 IS, or another 20D.. -grin- [/end geek]

[edit 14/12/05: Gig didn't go through, and ended up performing at it instead of shooting it ubblol Life has a funny way of messing you about doesn't it.. so no 2nd body for me just yet, or nice 24-105 f4 IS redface]

Been taking lots of photos lately. I think there's something intrinsically beautiful in capturing moments- you know how you look at a photo and it brings you back to where you were that day, who you were with, how the air smelt even.. Maybe one day I'll get to exhibit ubblove.. but yeah.. lots of work to be done meantime.

Hmmmm.. yes the world's beautiful today. It's good to have new toys, new moves, new direction.. old friends hug.. a best friend hug2, and enough distractions not to get bored for too long.

Btw.. favourite words haven't changed.. ubbrollsmile And mm.. I'm still not too close to balletic, and dulcet..

Hmm.. la la la laaa squawk.. footinmouth

[edit 14/12/05: I now have a beautiful alto saxophone- the best use of which I have thus far found, is to attract ducks and other misc waterfowl]

Yep, how about we say still aspiring. biggrin

Hope all's well with everyone- don't be strangers now! hug biggrin

I've been exploring this site a bit lately, and have decided everyone seems like a nice bunch- thought it's about time I said hello. Ryan, 24, born in Singapore, but Brisbane Australia has been home to me for the past 3 years.

I love photography, playing the guitar (if one took a picture of me with my guitar, it looks like I'm playing it- does that count?), getting from point A to B on my trusty mountain bike, inline skating and hockey, occasionally rockclimbing, and just being in good company. I'd also like to add poiing to the list when I stop hitting myself senseless.

Irrelevantly, my two favourite words (I've got heaps if anyone's interested) are 'balletic' and 'dulcet'. 'Balletic', unfortunately, isn't a word I'd use to describe anything I can do, and 'dulcet' is a word I haven't dreamt of aspiring towards yet.

Enough for now, don't be strangers! biggrin

Unfortunatly, the price of Sea bass by the Kilo has fallen somewhat in recent years.

The footage Mr Squishy Nose is of my little gremlin - aka AJ or Asha - saying something a little mischevious on Miss Lou's camera which was very cleverly caught by Sir Ry. So keep an eye out in my gallery for it! (I hope the Administrators see the funny side of it and dont ban it!)

Missing you more than muchly.. hug

Pete: Researching eh? ubblol Lying on broken glass? eek Next thing you'll be doing is walking on burning coals! Or have you done that already? The footage.. hehe think you best see it for yourself.. ubblol

Jean: I know what Officeworks is silly! I was just curious as to why you'd be going there to begin with! I think the best thing to do is invest in a decent camera kit if anything. A digital SLR is pretty much a necessity, and at the extreme minimum, I'd strongly recommend a Canon EOS 350D kit. Any excess should be spent buying a lens better than the kit lens, but you'll find that having a 'toy' as substantial as that, you'll teach yourself heaps just by having it and mucking around. Plus having AJ, you'll never run out of shooting material wink Hope all's well and things hug

The waves at Mooloolaba.. yup. That was pretty out of the ordinary. Was great to watch though. Good thing with waves.. if you miss one, you can always take a picture of the next one.. ubblol

Well, you are right the Canon is a very nice camera, but I am investing in a Pentax *ist, it is going to my present to myself once I have completed my studies in tourism. (which will hopefully be in Aug so I will *fingers crossed* have my new toy for CG - YAY!) I am a fan of the pentax stuff, as I have grown up using my Dad's SLR which is a fantastic film camera - and it also means I can pinch his lenses and not have to fork out too much as he already has a great range of stuff that is interchangeable. ubblol

Jean: See you've been researching already bounce bounce2- though.. you're putting me in a really difficult position. I started on Pentax film gear, and then went on to get a Pentax DSLR. Pentax related gear, I had a mz5n film body, an FA 28 2.8, a SMC F 50 1.4 (photodo.com mentions how good this particular lens is.. was really hard to find too), a Pentax mount Sigma EX 28-70 2.8 DF, an AF 360FGZ external flash, and 2 CR Kennedy 50th Anniversary *ist D DSLR bodies and some other misc accessories.

I actually found the *ist D (which 1 and a half years on, is *still* their flagship camera) to be an unsatisfactory performer, having poor performance at high ISOs, not to mention having backfocus issues with my 28-70, so much so the AF was visibly inaccurate.

Having no luck with Pentax's servicing department, I promptly returned both digital bodies to purchase Canon's 20D which (to be fair, it was in a slightly higher price class) was a world of difference. The 350D has the same processing power as the 20D which is why I'd recommend it without hesitation to someone starting out.

Pentax has announced they're coming up with a new flagship camera, allegedly with on-body image stabilisation which, if you dad has decent lenses, might come in handy, however, there's a good chance (if they're A series lenses) they will have no autofocus (which is something you'd want.. autofocus that is). However, this body, being their flagship, will be considerably more expensive that the D, Ds, Dl..

Canon though, is very visibly a step a head in development and production, as much as I hate to admit, and think that it would be a big mistake for a newcomer to become get into a camera system whose newer lenses cost more (lower production, economies of scale), and are much harder to find, or support.

Anyway.. there are definitely people who will disagree with me, and I'm voicing my opinion as a previous Pentax supporter (I loved my mz5n and never thought I'd part with it) who became disillusioned through first-hand experience.

Here are a couple of pics of my Pentax gear. ist D has since been returned (both of them), and the mz5n and 28-70 and flash and everything I sold to one of my lecturers to help finance my purchase of a Canon EF 70 200 2.8L IS. smile

Hey thanks Ry, it is always nice to have someone else's POV, and I do agree to a certain extent with your issues re the ist D DL and DS, as I have looked into and played with each of these and they all have thier downfalls and upsides - and I have had no experience with Pentax support as yet so I will keep your experience in mind - (I currently have an Optio WP, but it is more so AJ cant damamge the camera than anything else that I bought that one), hence me sort of settling on the ist, and also the fact that the ist would take Dad's lenses without an adapter. It is the base model of the ist series and is now aging rapidly compared to what is coming out and having said that I am not *set* on it, and as I mentioned I will be looking more seriously come August, and I am open to reserching and playing with the Canons devil
Anyway, I am off to do more researching and I thank you very muchly for your opinion and guidance hug
Keep smiling and happy. Hope the job hunting is going well.

Hi Jean, basically it's like this, they came out with the ist D a couple of years ago, and they came out with the ds and dl by stripping the D to make it cheaper to produce, because they were trying to capture the entry level segment of the market. The value in the newer Pentax system is mainly in a very select few lenses, imho, the limited FA31 f1.8, FA43 f1.9, FA77 f1.8, as well as the FA85 f1.4- all of which are very pricy prime (as opposed to zoom) lenses which are difficult to source locally or used even, and the majority of people who buy a d, ds or dl, will never own any of these lenses.

I'm guessing your dad's accumulated a collection of m42 screwmount glass, and I think it'd be an idea for him to invest in a D (relatively cheap, compared to his investment to date) but I'd suggest he go with Pentax's yet to be released offering which he'd have to wait a while for.

For you though, because you're building a system from scratch, I think it might be an idea to start a with a Canon (a 350D, or if you can, a 30D) or a Nikon (if you can swing it, a D200 is the one to look at), just because you'd want a system which seems to have a clearer upgrade route as well as overall development plan- and not depend on your dad's collection of lenses, which will take away AF as well as metering capabilities. Not to mention the fact Canon and Nikon lenses have a big used market for current gear; you won't have trouble selling if needed.

Sorry about the rant! Just don't want you to accidentally shortchange yourself. Things are going ok-ish.. Am still browsing jobs. Had an unexpected call earlier, but turned out to be another Telstra fella trying to get me to switch providers.. ugh. Hope all's well in your world hug

lol Sarah.. Well.. Pentax's newest point and shoot, the A10 is very promising. It's image stabilised and I think will be put up a good fight to Canon's SD800 IS. But at the end of the day.. it's the photographer, not the camera. shrug That's what they say anyway wink hug My photos though.. all camera. I take no credit ubblol

Jean: If you're keen to do more reading, the number one Pentax resource online is the Pentax Discussion Mailing List (PDML):
Archives: https://www.mail-archive.com/pentax-discuss%40pdml.net/
Mailing list: https://www.pdml.net/dbrewer/p2.html
(set it up with a new address, or filter it- hundreds and hundreds of messages daily.)

My preferred Canon resource is the POTN (photography on the net) forums: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/

But note that both groups can be wildly loyal to their own brands.

For a comparison and in good in-depth reviews, go to www.dpreview.com (buying guide>side by side). Don't bother with the forums too much though.. lots of trolls and people who prefer to argue than discuss.

Best of luck, and happy to help. If you let me know your budget and the sort of photography you do, I can try to help you put together a good kit/shopping list. wink

Happy to help! hug

Sarah - ubblol I will keep in mind that Pentax is poo...

Ry - hug thanks heaps buddy. I will be looking around the $1200 - $1500 mark. Well, I cant say that I have a particular subject matter for photography, but I do alot of fire stuff (der!) and also like doing some abstract landscapy things, wild weather, etc. I also love taking my camera to car shows and to the drags and car races etc - so there are often action shots. So having the ability to adjust shutter speeds and manaully focussing to particular points of the subject matter is desirable. Of course I also take piccies of the little Gremlin. Have bookmarked the pages for later reading - when the AJ Gremlin is asleep later tonight!;) Already familiar with dpreview, its a very good resource, and i promise to stay away from the trolls eek

Hmm.. currently, that's a pretty tight budget, but I'm sure things will change by August. It's tight because In addition to the camera and lens, you will also need a fast CF card, an external flash (which is a *must* for fire photography, imho).

If you know anyone coming back from overseas, you'll be able to get stuff cheaper, same if you're comfy buying online- but if you're buying at say James Place or Ted's, you'll most likely be paying a lot more than you should be.

On $1500, from Ted's you'll be able to get a 350D, an 18-55 kit lens (not a fantastic lens and possibly too slow for sports) as well as a 1gb sandisk extreme III (or ultra) cf card (the speed of the card is very important- generic cards are noticably slower in dslrs).

You pretty much do need an external flash (a 430EX perhaps) if you're doing lots of fire photography too, and if you can swing it, a better lens will improve your shots heaps. Mainly things like low light stuff as well as better background blur.

I suggest buying the body new (warranty and shutter actuations/lifetime), but buying lenses used. Lenses to consider (instead of the 18-55 kit lens, which your photography skills will outgrow very quickly) include the Sigma 18-55 2.8 DG, the Canon EF 50 1.8, the Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di. Of course, this will up the budget to around $2000, though, if bought very carefully (overseas, eBay, potn classifieds), can come in around $1800. Still got a few months to go yet, prices will look better don't worry wink

Btw.. I wonder if all this camera geek stuff scares people away ubblol
